Guwahati, May 20: The Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden here is coming up with a museum to showcase the state’s ecological diversity.

The ecology museum, being built keeping the interests of students in mind, will also have an interpretation centre. While the museum will exhibit various animal and plant specimens, the interpretation centre will have audio-visual facilities for public screening of short films and documentaries on wildlife.

The museum and the interpretation centre are being built as part of an Assam forest department plan to upgrade the zoo into a national museum. The Assam State Forest Museum, which was earlier a part of the zoo, was closed down.

“The ecological museum is almost ready and we are giving final touches to the exhibits, which comprise different animal and plant specimens. Among the exhibits are carcasses of different animal species that died in our zoo and skeletons of reptiles like snakes and crocodiles. We have been preserving these and some of them were earlier exhibited in the Assam State Forest Museum. We will also provide information on the specimens exhibited here,” said Chandan Bora, divisional forest officer of the state zoo.

“The museum has been designed to fulfil educational requirements of school students. They will get a chance to view the real animal specimens, which they have only read about in textbooks. Apart from this, the exhibits here will also increase public awareness about the rich flora and fauna of the state and the need to conserve these.”

The zoo receives about 6 lakh visitors every year, with 1,000-1,400 people visiting it every day. It is home to 899 inmates belonging to 119 species of animals, birds and reptiles.

“The interpretation centre, which will be constructed on the floor above the museum, is still in the planning stage. However, we have plans to install audio-visual facilities to screen short informative films on the state’s wildlife for visitors,” he said.
