Nike Sneakerball Sculpture

For its annual Sneakerball event held last week in Palacio Cibeles, Madrid, Spain, Nike commissioned New York artist Shane Griffin to design a sculpture that would serve as a welcoming centerpiece. The challenge presented to Shane was to sculpt a figure in 3D, which could be used in Nike’s print and promotional material, while at the same time still serve as the look development and blueprint for the sculpture itself. Working with Nike’s Colin Cornwell, the pair created blueprints from the 3D file, and carved foam to create the base model. The sculpture, which features three of Nike’s iconic shoe models—the Air Jordan 1, Nike Air Force 1, and Nike Blazer was then smashed into a Nike basketball and painted to look like concrete. Needless to say, Shane’s work fulfilled expectations and became a viral sensation. Take a look at the pictures of the sculpture or check it out for yourself if you’re in Madrid.
