York Museums Trust - Researchers Night at the Yorkshire Museum -

Huge Yorkshire Hyaenas, the secrets of Roman burials, the mysteries of ancient jewels and the colour of sea monsters will all be discussed by leading experts at the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens later this month as part of YorNight – European Researchers Night.
September 26, 5pm – 8.30pm – FREE, no need to book.

The family friendly and free event will consist of more than 40 different hands on activities, talks by experts and the chance to see up close the objects and artefacts which the researchers have been studying.

Some of the revelations include the colour of the Museum’s sea monsters, the traditions and ceremonies which surrounded Roman burials, the mysteries surrounding an Anglian gold ring and a talk on the hyaenas which once roamed and hunted in Yorkshire 120,000 years ago.

The York Observatory will also be open to look at the night sky, the museum’s Cosmodome will be running, there will be a host of craft activities to try and actors playing historical characters will be walking around the galleries to meet members of the public.

Amy Baggaley, learning manager for York Museums Trust, said:

“This is a very rare chance to come and meet leading experts on everything from dinosaurs to Romans, medieval jewels to moths all in the same place for one night only.

“The experts will be revealing the fascinating stories relating to objects in our collections and the techniques and skills they used to find out about them.

“All around the museum there will also be hands on activities, crafts and characters from history to meet, like the King who once owned the York Helmet, Oshere.

“Outside in the York Museum Gardens there will be further activities such as watching Fire Artists, storytelling and the chance to look at the night sky in our Observatory.”

The event is part of Yornight in association with the University of York. It is part European Researchers Night, which is being run in 300 cities across Europe.

All of the events are free for all, with no need to book.
