Pop-up museums could be used to display exhibits from soon to be closed Snibston Discovery Park

Pop-up museums could be used to display some of the thousands of exhibits and artefacts displaced from Snibston Discovery Park’s collection.

There is uncertainty over what will happen to items either on show to the public or in storage at the Coalville attraction, which is to be closed by Leicestershire County Council to save money.

County Hall says it will spend around £335,000 on an audit of the Snibston collection before deciding what to do with it, but cabinet member for museums councillor Richard Blunt said exhibits could appear in temporary displays.

He said: “I like the idea of pop-up museums. You could set them up in public places like council offices or perhaps schools.

“Obviously we still have a lot of work to do to decide what to do with the collection.

“It is a great collection and we want as many people as possible to be able to see what’s in it.”

The council has not set a date for Snibston’s closure but says it can no longer afford the running costs which it says will rise to £900,000.

It has proposed replacing the existing gallery – which will be demolished – with a smaller, less expensive mining heritage museum.

That could house some of the extensive mining and transport collection but is unlikely to keep items from its renowned costume collection or archaeology items.

The Mercury understands consideration has been given to asking Leicester City Council’s museums service to take some of the items.

City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: “I have deliberately not been involved in the discussion about whether Snibston should continue.

“That is a matter for the county council but many of the exhibits at Snibston represent Leicester’s industrial and manufacturing heritage.

“Indeed many of the artefacts there are ones that are not just from the city but ones where the city has significant claim on their future.”

He said he had no plan in place for any of the exhibits but said he would like to meet County Hall representatives to discuss ways the exhibits could be kept on display to the public.
