Lovers wanted for a Valentine's date with VanGoYourself
Lovers of all genders and ages are being invited to pucker up and create an unusual memento of their love for Valentine’s Day 2015.
Popular fine art selfie website VanGoYourself is seeking couples for an online romantic recreation of either an amorous embrace or chaste encounter inspired by works of art.
VanGoYourself, which is the brainchild of Culture24 in the UK and Plurio.net in Luxembourg, allows people to recreate classic artworks from museums and galleries around the world by selecting a famous work of art and then striking a pose.
Since its launch, in 2014, hundreds of people have VanGo'd themselves with the help of artworks from some of the best collections across Europe.
The recreations are then twinned with the original work. The best are added to the VanGo’d gallery and all the efforts - whether good, bad or downright hilarious - are uploaded to VanGoYourself Tumblr.
For Valentine’s Day, lovers are being encouraged to explore their romantic side with the help of several sensual classics such as Brighton Museum’s Idyll by Lawrence Koe (1888-1904) or the Rijksmuseum’s rather more restrained Double Portrait of a Young Couple as Granida and Daifilo by Johannes Mytens (1614-1670).
Alternatively, longstanding couples may want to commemorate their love with a recreation of the Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia's Sarcophogus of the Spouses, a late 6th century BC Etruscan anthropoid sarcophagus depicting a married couple reclining at a banquet together in the afterlife.
Things get wilder with the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art's Oedipus and the Sphinx, by Gustave Moreau, or there's the gently Sapphic overtones of the Villa Vauban's Two Women from Naples by Guillaume Bodinier.
As well as appearing in the top slot of the VanGoYourself website for all the world to see, the best couples will win a pair of mugs with their recreation emblazoned across them. Just the thing for a romantic cup of tea...Or cocoa. The very best will also be receiving a bottle of champagne.
