The Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center is owned by the Municipality of Anchorage and operated under contract by the Anchorage Museum Association, a non-profit 501(C) organization.
The mission of the Anchorage Museum is to collect, preserve exhibit and interpret the art, history and science of Alaska in relation to the circumpolar North.
The museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums and is supported in part by annual contributions from the Anchorage Museum Association, the Anchorage Museum Foundation, the Municipality of Anchorage, and additional private, corporate and foundation funds.
The Anchorage Museum brings the best of Alaska to the world and the best of the world to Alaska.

ARTIST OPPORTUNITIES
SOLO EXHIBITIONS
The Anchorage Museum’s solo artist exhibition program highlights new bodies of work by individual Alaska artists.
Once every three years, Alaska artists are invited to submit images of their work for review by a selection committee. This committee selects artists for upcoming solo exhibitions at the museum. This is a very competitive program: The museum typically receives more than 100 applicants for just a handful of available slots. Once artists have been selected and scheduled for solo exhibitions, the museum produces a full-color brochure for each artist and assists the artist with freight and mailing costs. Solo artist exhibitions are open to Alaska artists only.
JURIED EXHIBITIONS
The All Alaska Juried Art Exhibition occurs every other year, alternating with Earth, Fire and Fibre, the biennial Alaska juried craft exhibition.
The All Alaska Juried Art Exhibition features new works in all media. Artworks are chosen based on the artist’s skill level and forward-thinking concepts and methods. The exhibition is juried by a well-known museum director, curator, artist or critic from a nationally recognized institution. The exhibition is on view at the Anchorage Museum for three months and then begins a yearlong tour to museums across Alaska. The exhibition is accompanied by a full-color catalog. Prize money is awarded to artists, including a $1,000 best-of-show award. This exhibition is open to Alaska artists only.
Earth, Fire and Fibre features new works in traditional craft materials such as fiber, clay and wood. Artworks are chosen based on the artist’s skill level and forward-thinking concepts and methods. Earth, Fire and Fibre is juried by a well-known museum director, curator, artist or critic from a nationally recognized institution. The exhibition is on view at the Anchorage Museum for three months and then begins a yearlong tour to museums across Alaska. This exhibition is open to Alaska artists only.

POLAR LAB
Artists from Alaska and around the world utilize Anchorage Museum’s public spaces, indoors and out, virtual and real, to engage the public and explore ideas related to the North. Their research will culminate in performance, print and new media and a major exhibition in 2016.
Polar Lab will include a variety of events, such as pop-up museums, temporary installations, live performances, community-action projects, lectures, events and presentations. Polar Lab is part of the the museum's Northern Initiative.

WHY HAVE A JURIED ART EXHIBITION?
Juried exhibitions are an opportunity to exhibit work by many artists, introduce new artists to “the scene” and provide a survey of the work currently being produced by Alaskans. Guest jurors are esteemed curators, artists and art professionals from the region and beyond. Each juror brings a new perspective to the process; therefore, each exhibition offers a distinct, fresh view.
Every juried exhibition is controversial. While the choices are not arbitrary, each juror’s perspective is his or her own. The museum carefully selects jurors who have significant experience working with artists and evaluating artwork, so the exhibition is based on quality as well as the juror’s vision. By hosting juried exhibitions annually, the museum is able to include the work of hundreds of artists, ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to participate.
WHAT IS THE JURYING PROCESS?
First, each work is first carefully reviewed online by the juror. First-round picks are made through a scoring system. With hundreds of entries, a juror is not able to make comments on each piece. Jurors assess quality, but also are considering such things as the condition of the works and how each work fits into an overall vision for the exhibition. Final-round jurying takes place in person. The juror is flown to Alaska to see the work and the exhibition space, and then makes final selections. The juror writes a statement to articulate his or her choices, and presents a free public lecture announcing the selected works.
