Binanın Tarihçesi Ankara Ulus meydanında bulunan I. Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi binasının inşaasına, 1915 yılında başlanmıştır.

Binanın Tarihçesi Ankara Ulus meydanında bulunan I. Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi binasının inşaasına, 1915 yılında başlanmıştır.

I. Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisinin Açılışı 23 Nisan 1920'de Meclis etrafında binlerce kişi büyük bir kalabalık halinde Meclis'in açılışını beklemişlerdir.

Taylor, Primitive Culture, vol. 1, New York, 1874, p.1].

Forget Sudoku. Draw.

We do lots of things to promote our well being, become more resilient and ward off decline—we eat our veggies, exercise regularly, and imbibe green tea and red wine. Some of us give our brains a workout, as well, doing crossword puzzles, playing games, learning new skills or languages, or dancing (which increases volume in the hippocampus improving memory, according to studies). Now empirical evidence confirms what many of us have felt all along, Drawing and making art are good for you.

Making art positively affects the brain and enhances stress resistance. In a peer-reviewed article, “How Art Changes Your Brain: Differential Effects of Visual Art Production and Cognitive Art Evaluation on Functional Brain Connectivity”, the authors stated that their research was the first to demonstrate the neural effects of visual art production on psychological resilience in adulthood.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in a sample group of twenty-eight post-retirement adults (with no professional artists or art historians in the group), the research team examined the brain’s default mode network (very simply, regions of the brain associated with internal thought as opposed to action) to determine whether there was an evident change in the brains of those who made art, what they termed visual art production, or in those who evaluated pieces of art (cognitive art evaluation) resulting in different effects on the functional interplay of the brain’s default mode network.

They observed that the visual art production group showed greater spatial improvement in specific functional connectivity than the cognitive art evaluation group. “Moreover, the functional connectivity in the visual art production group was related to psychological resilience [a protective personality characteristic that allows individuals to control negatives effects of stress and thus enables a successful and healthy functioning even in stressful life conditions].”

A different team’s recent research indicates drawing develops your brain. “The people who are better at drawing really seem to have more developed structures in regions of the brain that control for fine motor performance and what we call procedural memory,” explains Dr. Rebecca Chamberlain, Laboratory of Experimental Psychology University of Leuven, Belgium, lead author of the article, “Drawing on the right side of the brain: A voxel-based morphometry analysis of observational drawing.” In this study using a scanning method called voxel-based morphometry, the researchers studied how observational drawing tasks affect the brain, examining a cohort of forty-four graduate art students and non-art students.

They measured structural differences in the brain’s grey matter and white matter in both the art students and non-art students. They correlated grey matter and white matter volume and performance on drawing tasks. What these scans revealed is stimulating: the art students had significantly more grey matter in the cerebellum and medial frontal gyrus (areas involved with fine motor control). And, that drawing relates to changes in fine motor structures in art and non-art students. Also, the scans revealed that the art students had more grey matter in the precuneus in the parietal lobe, an area of the brain linked to a wide spectrum of integrated tasks, including creativity, visuo-spatial imagery and more. (For those still holding to the notion of artists’ right brain dominance, this study showed increased grey and white matter in both the left and right brain structures.)

Again, this is no surprise to visual artists, designers and illustrators who have held firmly to the conviction that drawing is indeed thinking and intuitively have been prime investigators of visual perception and the visual brain. In a short film, “Milton Glaser Draws & Lectures” by C. Coy, esteemed designer Glaser, who wrote a book titled Drawing is Thinking, says, “The act of drawing makes me conscious of what I’m looking at…Drawing has always been a primary way of encountering reality…Drawing is essential to understanding form.”

“… we must look upon artists as persons whose observation of sensuous impression is particularly vivid and accurate, and whose memory for these images is particularly true.”—Hermann von Helmholtz, German scientist and philosopher, 1871

Dr. Lora Likova, a cognitive scientist at Smith-Kettlewell, might agree with Glaser. She writes (Likova, 2012), “We may not be aware of the complexity of drawing, but when analyzed in detail it becomes clear that drawing is an amazing process that requires precise orchestration of multiple brain mechanisms; perceptual processing, memory, precise motor planning and motor control, spatial transformations, emotions, and other diverse higher cognitive functions, are all involved. In terms of the multiple-intelligence theory (Gardner, 1983), drawing heavily employs such categories as bodily-kinesthetic and visuo-spatial intelligence .”

This amazing process of drawing, whether observational or conceptual, depends on diverse brain regions:
cerebellum (major brain region): movement
frontal lobe: reasoning, planning, movement, emotions, problem solving
parietal lobe: movement and orientation, spatial relationships, recognition, perception of stimuli, linked to a role in creativity
occipital lobe: vision, visual processing
temporal lobe: perception and memory

Robert L. Solso, Ph.D., who headed the Cognition Lab at the University of Nevada-Reno, conducted MRI scans of two people drawing portraits. One subject of his study was Humphrey Ocean, named by the National Portrait Gallery in London as one of the foremost portrait artists of the 20th century, and the other, the control subject, was a Stanford graduate student who had no formal art training. In his article, “About Faces, in Art and in the Brain” (Solso 2000), Dr. Solso explains that when the scans were compared results indicated that Ocean showed greater activation in the right frontal area than did the novice, which suggests that the expert “used ‘higher order’ cognitive processing. In effect, he could be ‘thinking’ a face, as well as ‘seeing’ it.”

According to this small study, Glaser is correct, Drawing is thinking.

People who draw develop their brains but that doesn’t answer the question why it feels so good to draw. Why do we give in to this artistic impulse? Could there be a neural chemical reward resulting from this activity? Is it biologically motivated?

When you draw, dopamine is released. In Parkinson Disease patients a lack of dopamine is associated with tremors and difficulty with coordination, according to neurologist Dr. Rivka Inzelberg, Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Inzelberg observed that Parkinson Disease patients treated with a synthetic dopamine-precursor pill, levodopa (L-DOPA) exhibited greater creative thinking. Dopamine is involved in the brain’s reward system, which also is the system associated with increasing creativity and lowering inhibitions. According to a study, “Enhanced Creative Thinking under Dopaminergic Therapy in Parkinson Disease,” “PD [Parkinson Disease] patients treated with dopaminergic drugs demonstrated enhanced verbal and visual creativity as compared to neurologically healthy controls…Dopaminergic agents might act through the reduction of latent inhibition, resulting in widening of the associative network and enriched divergent thinking.”

“Dopamine is produced in the brainstem, which is the oldest part of the brain evolutionarily speaking, but the dopamine is released in the newest region of cortex, the part that we use to create ideas, make decisions, and plan our actions. Thus, we feel rewarded when we create new objects or actions. And since creativity is based on the decisions made by the creator, the reward system kicks in when we are in control and inventing things that we have thought of ourselves. Freedom and ownership are part and parcel of the neurochemistry of the arts,” writes James E. Zull, Professor of Biology, Biochemistry, and Cognitive Science and Founding Director of the University Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education at Case Western Reserve University.

Drawing seems to cause neural interactions that give rise to pleasure. People ask, Why do you draw? What they really want to know is if they are likely to make their brains feel as good as yours does when you draw.

So tell them, Drawing makes your brain better and happier.

Elevated Origins: Radical new theory suggests Stonehenge was base of an above-ground celestial altar

The iconic profile of the world renowned prehistoric monument Stonehenge, found in Wiltshire, England, is unmistakable. The hewed standing stones rise up out of the earth in a testimony to ancient ideals, technology, and spirituality. One man believes that with our modern view we’re missing the point of Stonehenge, and to fully understand the purpose and use of it, we must think as our ancient ancestors did.

Art critic, historian and former curator Julian Spalding is proposing that the Stonehenge we know today may have been merely the support for a series of elevated wooden platforms. These platforms could have been used for spiritual ceremonies, elevating religious leaders off the ground - bringing humans closer to the heavens and the gods.

Spalding explains to The Guardian, “In early times, no spiritual ceremonies would have been performed on the ground. The Pharaoh of Egypt and the Emperor of China were always carried – as the Pope used to be. The feet of holy people were not allowed to touch the ground. We’ve been looking at Stonehenge from a modern, earth-bound perspective.”

No physical evidence has been found to back up the historian’s claim.

The exact purpose of Stonehenge is not known, but some researchers believe it was built as an ancient calendar to mark seasons and the movements of the sun and moon. Others say it was a place of healing, or dying, or perhaps a place of worship.

MORE

Spalding’s new theory suggesting that Stonehenge, built between 3000 and 2000 B.C., could have been an “ancient Mecca on stilts,” is tantalizing. It draws links between other sky-reaching ancient monuments around the globe, such as pyramids found in Egypt and Central America, and the three-tiered circular altar Temple of Heaven in China.

Spalding believes the Stonehenge site might have sported a “raised altar reached via ramps or stairs where thousands of prehistoric people might have worshiped in a more elevated style,” reports The Washington Post.

There is some skepticism over the new theory. Oxford University archaeology emeritus professor Sir Barry Cunliffe tells The Guardian, “He could be right, but I know of no evidence to support it.”

Still others feel the idea might be plausible.

Aubrey Burl, an archaeologist and authority of prehistoric stone circles, says "There could be something in it. There is a possibility, of course. Anything new and worthwhile about Stonehenge is well worth looking into, but with care and consideration.”

The past years have brought many new discoveries at Stonehenge and Salisbury Plain, quickly changing the way researchers understand the site and the ancient people who lived there.

In 2014 archaeologists revealed the results of a four-year-long project to map the hidden landscape beneath the surface of the Stonehenge environs, and what they found is nothing short of amazing. Through their high-tech devices they found a landscape teeming with burial mounds, chapels, shrines, pits, and other structures, which had never been seen before, including another massive megalithic monument composed of 60 giant stones stretched out along a 330-meter long c-shaped enclosure.

According to The Independent, the discovery dramatically altered the prevailing view of Stonehenge as the primary site in the landscape. Instead it presented the Salisbury Plain as an active religious center with more than 60 key locations where ancient peoples could carry out sacred rituals and fulfil their religious obligations.

Spalding’s theories can be found in his new book “Realisation” which “explores our ancestors’ understanding of the world, offering new explanations of iconic works of art and monuments,” writes The Guardian.

As further investigations are done across Salisbury Plain and at the famous Stonehenge itself, perhaps more information will come to light that supports Spalding’s theory. In the meantime, the public will flock to Stonehenge to enjoy the beauty of the ancient site and the mystery that remains thousands of years after it was created.

Speaking to The Washington Post, Spalding concludes, “I think they welcome the idea that there’s a very fresh way of looking at this remarkable place.”

Cultures entwine in vivid forms in Mexican Museum exhibition

A few artists in the Mexican Museum’s “Maestros: 20th Century Mexican Masters” merit the slightly grandiose claim that the exhibition’s title makes. But the selection on view is too small and too uneven to make an adequate case for anyone.

A visitor can almost feel in the air, though, the excitement with which the institution is looking forward to the time, still a few years away, when new quarters will give it the space to do justice to Mexican masters. In February, the museum board appointed a new president and CEO,Cayetana Gómez, who comes from Mexico City with extensive experience in museum development.
Earlier this week, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to grant the Mexican Museum a 66-year lease, renewable for 33 years, on the patch of downtown city land it will occupy when it enters a new permanent facility in 2018, as the cultural facet of the ambitious 706 Mission Street residential development project being undertaken by Millennium Partners.
“Maestros” and the humble Fort Mason exhibition space it occupies give faint feeling for the vision and promise of exhibitions and collection display possible to the Mexican after its permanent facility has opened.
Some names among the “Maestros” will be familiar — Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente OrozcoJose ZunigaLeonora CarringtonJose Luis Cuevas — though the works that represent them may not be.
Graphic arts predominate, and in a couple of instances they surpass paintings here by the same artists, as in the case of Roberto Montenegro, whose untitled 1926 aquatint of two peasant women has a simple formal power far greater than his untitled 1942 oil painting.
A strong strain of surrealism runs through the survey, as it would through any overview of modern Mexican art. The entwining of ancient Mesoamerican, colonial and post-colonial Christian and other European cultural influences gave modern Mexican art multiple dialects of vivid pictorial expression.
A viewer might think passingly of Edvard Munch or late Picasso, as well as of modern Mexican influences, upon seeing Francisco Corzas’ fiery color lithograph “Artist’s Model” (1969).
Alejandro Colunga’s all-but-undecodeable untitled 1976 acrylic painting evokes a mulch of Mexican Catholic and statelessly irreverent imagery and impulses, both comic and sincere.
Cuevas’ dazzlingly complex lithograph “The Sorceress” (1969) bespeaks an inventive hand and imagination so driven as to leave detailed interpretation foundering.
The biggest surprise here may be Mathias Goeritz’s “Commentary on Psalm 117” (c. 1970): a gessoed wood panel entirely covered with gold leaf.
It gestures back in time to the lineage of gold-ground medieval and early Renaissance paintings and askance at similar works in a completely irreligious secular spirit by Yves Klein (1928-1962).
In case Psalm 117 doesn’t leap to mind, it reads, in the King James Version: “Praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people./ For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever. Praise ye the Lord.”
Goeritz’s piece can stand for the challenge that the Mexican Museum’s collection promises to offer to our viewing habits when we finally see it properly arrayed.
Yvette Gellis at Toomey Tourell: Too little contemporary painting delivers a sense of adventure either to informed or uninitiated viewers. Count the work of Los Angeles painter Yvette Gellis an exception.
Her paintings, in Toomey Tourell’s final exhibition at its Geary Street address, make a bracing impression. Their unpredictability is rooted in materials as well as style. One piece has a Plexiglas panel pegged to its surface, which serves both to activate all the work’s details in surprising fashion and as a symbol of Gellis’ rethinking of what she made.
Ruched gauze emerges from the surface of another small work, like a studio secret inadvertently divulged but then allowed to show.
The wonderful “Ruin in Pink” (2014) typifies in many ways the work Gellis shows here. At its lower left corner, cruciform bands on a white ground hint at a viewless window, seeming to invite light to stream throughout the picture. Dark-hued knife and brushstrokes spring forth suggesting stacked books or planks, giving way to a flurry of detail in the painting’s upper right quadrant — a nearly pure instance of how the painter’s hand can set a viewer’s eye dreaming.

The uneven success of Gellis’ work in this selection testifies to her willingness to strike out in any direction for the sake of her art’s liveliness.
