ZEPTER MUSEUM, Belgrado.

The founder of the Museum (together with the co–founder ZEPTERINVEST) and its owner, Mrs. Madlena Zepter, a citizen of Belgrade and the world, and the world in Belgrade, presented her native city with another cultural institution. From the very beginning, because of its importance and high quality it has become a meeting place for all lovers of art from the town, the entire region and also from abroad. By the decision of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia this establishment has been registered as the first private art museum in Serbia – the ZEPTER MUSEUM.

It was opened on July 1, 2010 in that magnificent building in the historic centre of Belgrade and the vicinity of the most precious cultural and educational institutions (the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Faculties of Philosophy, Philology, Fine Arts ...) at 42, Kneza Mihaila Street.

The core activity of the ZEPTER MUSEUM is to collect systematically, protect, study, exhibit and publish works of art. It is intended to gather together in one place the works and artists who can visualize the complex art scene in Serbia in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the new millennium.

One could, perhaps, say that the main feature of the Zepter Gallery COLLECTION is the continuity, in the sense of what Stojan Ćelić once named as „right to everything“: „We used to prove ourselves within our own frames of reference. So, with Čelebonović we learned the real splendour of painting, with Lubarda we got to known the limits of ascent, with Gvozdenović what one can zealously undertake in one’s full maturity, with Tabaković how to reach the spaces of the irrational.“ By learning from the best in one’s own surroundings, by seeing artworks at the important exhibitions Belgrade was privileged enough to host, but also by visiting the European and world centres of art, our artists from the 1950s and 1960s broadened their horizons and strengthened their motivation to persevere along their own creative paths. This brought up the personalities who would become the foundations of our modernism and inspire future generations of artists. This approach erased the borderline between the provinces and the leading art centres, and enhanced the maturing of exceptional artistic individuals who left their imprints on their time and on our entire art production from the second half of the twentieth century. The intention of our COLLECTION is to emphasize that. Therefore it also comprises the works by painters and sculptors who had been members of different groups, such as the Zadar Group, the December Group, The Eleven, Mediala. There are also representatives of the most radical developments, such as informel and other aspects of abstract expression, representatives of the new, narrative and poetic figuration, Pop Art and new objectivity, Neue Wilden (New Wild Ones) and transavanguardia, fantastic painting, and almost all other tendencies and developments from the turn of the century and the new millennium, including certain examples of conceptual and postconceptual art. The COLLECTION also presents, among others, many professors from the Faculties of Fine and Applied Arts in Belgrade and the Arts Academy in Novi Sad (the teachers of new generations) and members of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the most prestigious cultural institution in the country. Naturally, there are also the young ones, those who are yet to enter the history of our, and maybe European art.

In three years of its activity, the ZEPTER MUSEUM has enlarged the number of represented artists from 134 to 164 and the number of artworks from 350 to over 400. In its meticulous replenishment of the collection, the Museum has paid special attention to the technique of pastel and the works of those artists who are about to leave the Faculty of Fine Arts.

The ZEPTER MUSEUM has all the necessary modern technical equipment and everything else required by any museum activity. The ZEPTER MUSEUM is a living organism and its doors are open to a broad variety of cultural events – chamber music concerts, video presentations, discussions and promotions, lectures, topical meetings and professional talks. In other words, it is our desire that the Museum functions as a cultural centre with events of the highest standard.

Briefly, it is our desire to perform an educational and cultural mission.

Although Gombrich believed that it was difficult, almost impossible to satisfy simultaneously the requirements of a profession and the interests of the public, our ambition is to reconcile these antipodes and to make a contribution with our cultural mission so that art, and particularly the art from our COLLECTION, becomes broadly accepted here and as such presented in the world. If we succeed − and we believe it will happen − the reasons for our existence will have been justified and the goals of our activity fulfilled.

– Comisia de specialişti pentru secţia de istorie medie: prof. univ. dr. Gheorghe Ştefan, prof. univ. Mihai Berza, Octavian Iliescu, prof. univ. dr. Ion Ionaşcu, dr. Constantin Şerban, dr. Ştefan Olteanu, Lucian Chiţescu);

– Comisa de istorie modernă: prof. univ. dr. C.C. Giurescu – preşedintele comisiei, dr. Cornelia Bodea, membru, dr. Dan Berindei, membru, dr. Vasile Netea, membru, Elena Pălănceanu, secretar, Ion Ilincioiu, secretar);

– Comisia de specialişti de pe lângă Tezaurul istoric: acad. Andrei Oţetea – preşedinte, Corina Nicolescu, Alexandrina Alexandrescu, Ecaterina Dunăreanu–Vulpe, Octav Iliescu, Bucur Mitrea, Xenia Ghica – arhitect, Viorica Caşoianu – arhitect, Mircea Sfârlea, Ştefan Burda, Radu Florescu, Mircea Neicov – Departamentul Cultelor, Nicolae Vlasa – Muzeul de Istorie Cluj;

– Comisia de Istorie Antică: Emil Condurachi – preşedinte, Ion Ardeleanu, Petre Alexandrescu – cercetător principal la Institutul de Arheologie, Hadrian Daicoviciu – director adjunct Muzeul de Istorie a Transilvaniei, Nicolae Lupu – decanul Facultăţii de Istorie și Filozofie Sibiu, Xenia Ghica – arhitect, Adrian Rădulescu – director Muzeul de Arheologie Constanţa, Lucia Ţeposu – şef Secţie Istorie Antică Muzeul Naţional de Istorie);

S-a lucrat aproape zilnic câte 14-16 ore.

May 8, 2015, marks 43 years since the inauguration of the National Museum of Romanian History. The creation of this museum was a challenge for the authorities, but also for specialists, because it represented a projection, more concentrated, the whole system of history museums in the country.

In 1968 it created the appropriate legal framework for the organization of the National History Museum. By Decision no. 1448/1968 of 07.03.1968, the Council of Ministers of the Socialist Republic of Romania decided the establishment of the museum, whose heritage "will consist of valuables republican institutions under the administration of museums, libraries and documentation centers, subordinated to the State Committee Culture and Art, the Socialist Republic of Romania, ministries and other central bodies of state administration and executive committee popular, state archives, songs which will be obtained from public organizations or individuals through donations or acquisitions, and the results of research organized especially for this purpose. When selecting parts will take into account the needs of the institutions we have, to not disrupt their work or collections. Also, National Museum of Romanian History will be complete by acquiring foreign assets - the original or a copy - of exhibits and documents relating to the history of Romania. "

To house the museum they were considered the Justice Palace, the Palace of Post and People's Council of the Capital building, but also discussed the possibility of building a new headquarters. Finally, the central post office building in Bucharest, Calea Victoriei. 12 was assigned to the National History Museum.

On March 20, 1970, appear new (and last) "Decision of the Council of Ministers of the Socialist Republic of Romania on the establishment of the History Museum of the Socialist Republic of Romania" establishing and membership of the Organizing Commission, whose chairman was Academician Constantin Daicoviciu. It began construction of the Palace of Post apace and, two years later, on May 8, 1972, was opened to the public the largest history museum in Romania.

The first group of specialists originally posted, then transfer "for work" at the museum, was made up of: Sarafolean Gabriel - Head of Section, Chiţescu Lucian - head of section, Leahu Valeriu - head of section, David-Teposu Lucia - Head of Section, Vâlcu Gheorghiţă - main curator, Liviu Stefanescu - main curator, Elena Popescu - main curator, Stephen Burda - main curator, Ilincioiu Ion - main curator, Ligor Alexander - the main curator and Chivulescu Emilia - Secretary dactilo.

Making permanent exhibition of the National Museum of History was a very complex issue and very complicated. Within that expose objects of great historical relevance, but beyond that, historical truth had to cohabit with ideological requirements. The main exhibition was from the outset divided into sections, each section there is a committee of specialists responsible for thematic analysis. We believe that it is worth to remember those who were part of this committee:

- Committee of experts for medieval history department: prof. Dr. dr. George Stephen, prof. dr. Michael storks, Octavian Iliescu, prof. Dr. dr. Ion Ionaşcu, dr. Constantin Serban, dr. Stefan Olteanu Lucian Chiţescu);

- Committed modern history: prof. Dr. dr. C.C. Giurescu - committee chairman, Dr. Cornelia Bodea member, dr. Dan Berindei member, dr. Vasile net member, Elena Palanceanu, secretary, Ion Ilincioiu Secretary);

- Committee of experts attached to the historical treasure: Acad. Andrei Oţetea - President, Corina Nicolescu, Alexandrina Alexandrescu, Catherine Dunăreanu fox, Octav Iliescu, Bucur Mitrea, Xenia guessed it - architect, Viorica Caşoianu - architect, Mircea Sfarlea Stephen Burda, Radu Florescu, Mircea Neicov - Department of Religious Affairs Nicholas Vlas - History Museum Cluj;

- Commission of Ancient History: Emil Condurachi - President Ion Ardeleanu, Petre Alexandrescu - researcher at the Institute of Archaeology, Hadrian Daicoviciu - deputy director of the History Museum of Transylvania, Nicolae Lupu - Dean of the Faculty of History and Philosophy Sibiu, Xenia guessed it - architect Adrian Radulescu - Archaeology Museum director, Lucia Teposu - Ancient History Department Head National History Museum);

- Commission of Contemporary History (Aron Petric, Titu Georgescu, Banyai Ladislas, Serban Cioculescu, Ion Ardeleanu Vasile Arima, Carol Gölner Victor Axenciuc, Constantin Mocanu, Gavrila Sarafolean, arch. Dumitru Stanescu).

The organization has assumed the permanent exhibition planning, design and construction of 55 exhibition halls with an exhibition area of 15,000 m2; They were installed in 1500 in which the exposure system was set approx. 50 000 museum values; They were drawn 300 texts halls and showcases; They were made 64 maps, 80 charts and 9 000 labels.

The first form of the permanent exhibition has been organized in 40 days! It worked almost daily by 14-16 hours. The main exhibition of the Museum of History RSR, as a result, was flat in 50 rooms, with an additional Numismatic Cabinet, Lapidarium and Historical Treasure. On the second floor there briefly, Romanian medieval art exhibition.

Gathering under one roof the most important testimonies of Romania's past, it is no wonder that the museum was a point of attraction for the country but also abroad. At the same time, the communist regime regarded the museum as an instrument of propaganda and once (or especially) the realization Tribute Exhibition (1978), as a basic pillar place under Nicolae Ceausescu's personality cult. Following its history under communism we find sufficient evidence to convince us of its role as the leading museum institution, but also the body good "corseted" the shackles of ideology "Golden Age".

National Museum of Romanian History continues to be one of the representative institutions of the Romanian culture, owning a fund valuable cultural goods Mobile illustrating all significant periods in the history of the Romanian people and the time of civilizations which existed in seniority the current territory of our country.

The rich heritage includes over 650,000 pieces (a number that increases annually which include items outstanding), organized in the following collections: ceramics, Lapidary-tegularium, numismatics, philately, medals-sigillography, treasury, manuscripts, prints, fine art, art decorative, historical Photographs, prints, paper, metal, weapons and equipment, textiles and furniture.

In September 2002 the permanent exhibition of the National Museum of History was packed objects road taking deposits. Rehabilitation strength structure began in winter of the same year, the works being executed by September 2005, approximately 50%. Complete reconstruction work was expected for mid-2007, the term could not be respected.

Because the museum was in repairs, most of the exhibitions are temporarily closed or reorganized. As the consolidation of the building will resume, permanent historical exhibition will be reopened gradually.

The museum presents to the public, currently two major permanent exhibits - Historical Thesaurus, respectively Lapidarium copy of Trajan's Column - temporary exhibitions with different themes, organized in the hall.

- Comité de peritos para medieval departamento de história:. Prof Dr. dr. George Stephen, prof. dr. Michael cegonhas, Octavian Iliescu, prof. Dr. .. dr Ion Ionascu, dr Constantin Serban, dr Stefan Olteanu Lucian Chiţescu.);

- História moderna Compromisso:. Prof Dr. dr. C.C. Presidente da comissão, membro do Dr. Cornelia Bodea, dr membro Dan Berindei, dr Vasile membro da rede, Elena Palanceanu, secretário, secretário Ilincioiu Ion) - Giurescu;..

- Comité de peritos ligados ao tesouro histórico: Acad. Andrei Oţetea - Presidente, Corina Nicolescu, Alexandrina Alexandrescu, Catherine Dunăreanu raposa, Octav Iliescu, Bucur Mitrea, Xenia adivinhou - arquiteto, Viorica Caşoianu - arquiteto, Mircea Sfarlea Stephen Burda, Radu Florescu, Mircea Neicov - Departamento de Assuntos Religiosos Nicholas Vlas - History Museum Cluj;

- Comissão de História Antiga: Emil Condurachi - O presidente Ion Ardeleanu, Petre Alexandrescu - pesquisador do Instituto de Arqueologia, Adriano Daicoviciu - vice-diretor do Museu de História da Transilvânia, Nicolae Lupu - Decano da Faculdade de História e Filosofia Sibiu, Xenia adivinhou - arquiteto Adrian Radulescu - director Museu de Arqueologia, Lucia Teposu - História Antiga Chefe de Departamento Museu Histórico Nacional);

- Comissão de História Contemporânea (Aron Petric, Titu Georgescu, Banyai Ladislas, Serban Cioculescu, Ion Ardeleanu Vasile Arima, Carol Gölner Victor Axenciuc, Constantin Mocanu, Gavrila Sarafolean, arco Dumitru Stanescu.).

Teylers Museum, Holanda - Exhibition on the splendid work of William Hogarth.

William Hogarth

The English painter William Hogarth (1697-1764) has become known chiefly as a kind of precursor of the comic-book illustrator. He produced narrative prints in series: stories about a rake or libertine hoping to make his mark in the city, or a marriage based on money and therefore doomed to fail. These moralistic, satirical prints were extremely popular. They contain comical allusions to political and social events of the day. Teylers Museum has the artist's complete oeuvre of prints, and will be exhibiting a fine selection from them in the summer of 2015.

William Hogarth
