Andy Warhol epitomised the pop art of the 20th century, Ai Weiwei embodies the Instagram generation and activism of the 21st. Now the two artists will be brought together in a major new exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in December.

Warhol's One Dollar Bill fetches £20.9m on record night for Sotheby's

Developed by the NGV and the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh (where it will show in June 2016), Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei will present more than 300 works, exploring the parallels and points of difference in their art and influence on contemporary culture.

The exhibition will span painting, sculpture, film, photography and social media – no surprise given the involvement of Ai, a prolific blogger who has 277,000 followers on Twitter, 108,000 on Instagram and claims to spend up to eight hours online every day.

The Chinese artist has spoken openly of the influence of Warhol and his “famous for 15 minutes” prediction on his work. When Ai moved to the US in 1981, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B & Back Again) was the first book he purchased and in 1987, he took a photographic self-portrait in front of Warhol’s own self-portrait at the Museum of Modern Art, showing both artists adopting the same gesture.

‘‘I believe this is a very interesting and important exhibition and an honour for me to have the opportunity to be exhibited alongside Andy Warhol,” said Ai of the Melbourne show. “This is a great privilege for me as an artist.”

The curators call the artists “exemplary figures”: Warhol representing modernity and the “American century” and Ai Weiwei contemporary life in the Chinese century” to come. The exhibition will feature new commissions by Ai, including installations from his Forever Bicycles and Chandelier series, as well as previously unseen works by Warhol from his small press books.

And it wouldn’t be an internet-influenced show without some cats – as a large-scale installation in the NGV Kids space will show. Warhol lived with a herd of Siamese cats in the 1950s, who often make cameos in his work of the period, while more than 30 cats have the run of Ai’s studio in Beijing and his social media feeds.

CONSCIOUS CONSUMPTION: CRAFTING THE CITY

Object + Idea | Ask the big questions about what you wear, eat and take in

Be part of Conscious Consumption series 2 as the Textile Museum of Canada pulls together important conversations about consumption and moves them into the city around us. We start with the premise that consumption is an everyday activity that benefits from awareness. We also see it as a deeply personal one – full of commitment, passion and learning.

Towards a personal code of consumption

What do I consume?
How and where are things made?
What makes “craft” craft?
And does it matter to me?

Hear big ideas, get the inside scoop! Join us as we explore how the idea of craft has become part of philosophies of a more responsible life, driving artisanal and sustainable movements today. Each event in the series gets up close and personal with places and people who have pioneered ways of life that are innovative and independent, and who have introduced new elements to the landscape – from urban agriculture and alternative architectures to craft foodways and sustainable fashion. Conscious Consumption: Crafting the City focuses on essentials – food, shelter, clothing – and how craft is an inherent part of practices that are a defining part of sustainable lifestyles today.

Conscious Consumption is presented with the support of TD Friends of the Environment as well as the K.M. Hunter Charitable Foundation.

Hydra’s Historic Archives and Museum, Hydra is one of the Saronic Islands of Greece,

The Historic Archives and Museum of Hydra (IAMY), supervised by the Ministry of Education, gathers and catalogs documents and artifacts related to Hydra, particularly the history, culture, and tradition of the island.

Located on the eastern side of the port a short distance from the coastguard headquarters, this museum was originally given to the municipality in 1918 and later transferred to the Greek state by local ship owner Gikas Koulouras. The new two-storey facility, built in 1972, was officially opened in 1996 and houses the island’s historical archives.

Maintenance and improvement to the property are also made possible by a contribution from Hydra’s mayor, Dr. Antonios Lignos.

The ground floor houses an extensive library, a memorabilia collection from the Balkan Wars through to World War II, and archival materials. The first floor hosts an exhibition of costumes, weapons and a library, while the second floor documents the area’s key historical events.

One of the more curious items on display is the preserved heart of the great fighter and admiral Andreas Miaoulis.

Today the archive includes some 20,000 original manuscripts, codices books, and other historic rare documents and materials. The museum displays artifacts from national and Hydriot history and culture, as well as paintings by well-known artists.

Founded in 1918, IAMYmoved to its current, specially constructed location in 1972.

Covering two floors, the museum displays, among other items, firearms, weapons, and artifacts from the Greek Revolution, Balkan Wars, and World Wars I and II, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century heirlooms, marine maps and nautical equipment, traditional dress and folk costumes, the figureheads of ships, and, perhaps somewhat ghoulishly, the embalmed heart of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis, Hydriot hero of the 1821 revolution. Lining the walls of the first floor and staircase are paintings by Greek and European artists.

Archives

The File Department catalogs and preserves all documents, both public and private, relating to Hydra’s history, civilization, and traditions from the time of Ottoman rule to the present. These files comprise a significant historical source of information about island and it’s importance during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. A rich library contains more than five thousand old and rare volumes, some dating to the early eighteenth century.

Museo de Ciencias Naturales y el Petróleo "Prof. Rodolfo Parodi Bustos", Argentina
