La ville d'Helsinki a finalement renoncé à accueillir un nouveau musée Guggenheim, malgré la promesse de retombées économiques et touristiques importantes pour le pays. Ce refus sonne-t-il le glas d'un modèle à succès, celui de la fondation et son fameux effet Bilbao?
Construire un musée prestigieux pour redynamiser le tourisme, tel était le projet de la ville finlandaise, inspirée comme tant d'autres par l'incroyable succès du musée Guggenheim à Bilbao. Depuis sa construction il y a 20 ans sous la direction de Frank Gehry, l'institution représente un exemple de réussite. Hélas, le miracle Bilbao ne s'est jamais vraiment reproduit et les espoirs des Finlandais se sont peu à peu essoufflés.
Bilbao, un succès unique
Selon Maria Gravari-Barbas, géographe et enseignante à la Sorbonne, l'expérience de Bilbao, phénomène architectural et culturel, a été tout à fait inédite. Aujourd'hui le contexte a beaucoup changé. Depuis vingt ans, explique la spécialiste, plusieurs autres projets se sont inscrits dans cette approche et n'ont pas obtenu le succès du musée Guggenheim de la ville basque.
Le budget conséquent du projet, 140 millions de francs, explique également les réticences des Finlandais, dont le retour sur investissement n'était absolument pas assuré. Reste que la volte-face d'Helsinki représente un pied de nez pour la célèbre Fondation qui s'apprête à ouvrir à Abu Dhabi un nouveau musée dessiné par Franck Gehry.
