As raízes russas do Chanel nº5 --- Russian roots of Chanel No. 5

Champions of Design: Chanel No 5

The perfume brand started out as a dinner-party gift and now boasts sales of about 10m bottles per year.

The design of the Chanel No 5 bottle has remained a timeless classic, since the variant was created in 1921 as a modern contrast to the other perfumes of the early 20th century.

The French socialite and clothing designer, Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel, asked the perfumer Ernest Beaux to create a scent that embodied the modern, unconventional woman.

Chanel initially gave the No 5 perfume bottles to close friends at a dinner, before the perfume went on general sale the following year. The fragrance chiefly comprised rose, ylang-ylang, jasmine and sandalwood. The inclusion of aldehydes (compounds formed by the partial oxidation of alcohols) created a fresh and lasting synthetic scent.

Enclosed in a transparent, crystal bottle, the amber liquid became the focal point of the product's design. The clean-cut vessel, with its rectangular shape and rounded shoulders, was a contrast to the ornate art deco-style bottles of the early 1900s. The design was said to be based on a whisky decanter used by Chanel's lover, Arthur 'Boy' Capel.

The black and white label complemented the functionality of the bottle and the perfume, in line with the simplicity and comfort of the hats and clothes Chanel had been creating since establishing her millinery shop in 1910.

Chanel No 5 proved popular with the public when it was launched in 1922 and was soon released in the US. The glass bottle was too thin for shipping and distribution, so its corners were altered from a rounded to square shape for export.

Chanel required the necessary investment capital and business expertise to support expansion beyond Europe. She entered a partnership with two businessmen, the Wertheimer brothers, and together they established the Parfums Chanel Company, with Chanel retaining a 10% share of the business.

Although it is now in its 90th year of production, the current bottle barely differs from its original design. The company has always worked hard to retain the perfume's aspirational status. In 1934, the pocket flacon, a smaller-sized bottle, was created to reach the middle-class customers.

In 1974, when the perfume ran the risk of becoming a mass-market product, Alain Wertheimer reduced sales outlets from 18,000 to 12,000, removing the bottle from drug stores in the US.

As soon as No 5 was less readily available, it was in far higher demand, and sales have remained strong as a result.

Chanel No 5 remains successful today, with about 10m bottles sold worldwide every year.

Extravagant campaigns have featured a range of celebrities. Marilyn Monroe is famously quoted as saying that she wore five drops of Chanel No 5 to bed. In more recent times, Nicole Kidman starred in film director Baz Luhrmann's movie-like ad, while Brad Pitt is one of the contemporary faces of the brand.

Few people know, but in 1921 the Russian chemist Konstantin Veríguin helped create a compound of perfume that was the basis for the French legendary Chanel No. 5.

The Russian chemist Konstantin Veríguin always had a particularly keen sense of smell. In his mind, every place, person or event had a unique and unrepeatable smell.
It all started during his childhood, elapsed between the homeland, Petersburg, and the properties of their parents in the regions of Ufa and Simbirsk - why loved the feeling of cold air and the freshness frost. The smell coming from the fireplace burning pine wood and fresh coffee also marked.
One day, the young Konstantin, watching the dresser of his aunt, was surprised by the diversity of foreign bottles and different odors. He received a gift of some bottles and as soon as the experiments began.
During the Russian Civil War, Konstantin joined the White Army and fought against the Bolsheviks in the Crimea in 1919. The failure, however, led him to exile in France.
At that time, Veríguin knew that his life would be linked to perfumes. One day he was introduced to Ernest Beaux, an authority in the field of perfumery in France, he was surprised by the talent of the young Russian chemist and proposed a collaboration.
Over time, Beaux became not only an authority and teacher to Veríguin, but also a friend. Even referred to it the Russian way - Ernest Eduardovitch - and with reason.
Beaux was born in 1882 in Moscow, but in a French family. He spoke Russian perfectly, loved Pushkin, Turgenev and Dostoevsky and Ballet Imperial.

Even in Russia, he had begun to engage in perfume and even created the "Bouquet of Katherine" in honor of the Empress, as well as other popular perfumes. In 1920, Beaux was forced to return to France.
5 lucky
The First World War ended the Belle Époque, and with it began a speed period: the life was the rhythm of the foxtrot, amid the cigarette smoke and the noise of cars and trains. Fashion has adapted to this new rhythm, as well as lifestyle. It was necessary, then create a perfume set at the time.
The famous fashion designer Coco Chanel asked Beaux to create a perfume for her. It then showed him a number of aromas and coconut selected number 5 flask.

Later, when asked about the name of the perfume, Coco merely said that it would present its "clothing collection on the fifth day of the fifth month of the year, ie May. So, let the perfume with the same number. This 5 will bring luck. "
Veríguin was responsible for purchasing a quality essence, the choice of ingredients and the quality control. No wonder that the note, or raw material, main Chanel No. 5 is the freshness of the northern rivers.
In these rivers, as described Veríguin, the spring scent feels after defrosting with "power and clarity, sound and light youth bravery". For the creator, these smells were the memory of the Russian spring. The desired effect was obtained by adding aldehydes to classical floral base.
Beaux was excited about the result of the work of his Russian assistant. On May 5, 1921, the new fragrance was presented to the public as the first to reflect the fashion trends and the smell of the new decade.

unprecedented IBGE survey detailed characteristics of Brazilian indigenous peoples

The findings are part of the most comprehensive study ever done by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) on Brazilian indigenous peoples, based on the 2010 Census and released this week.

According to the Institute, there are about 900,000 Indians in Brazil, which are divided among 305 ethnic groups and speak at least 274 languages. The data make Brazil one of the countries with the highest socio-cultural diversity of the planet. In comparison, in the entire European continent, there are about 140 indigenous languages, according to a study published in 2011 by the European History Institute.

In "Theme Notebook: Indigenous Peoples", IBGE is a unique mapping of the location of these peoples and its changes over the past decades.

The study says that between 2000 and 2010, the percentage of Brazilian Indians who live in the South and Southeast regions fell, while grown in other regions. The northern region is home to the largest share of Brazilian Indians (37.4%), followed by the Northeast (25.5%), Midwest (16%), Southeast (12%) and South (9.2%).

Between 2000 and 2010, also dropped the percentage of Indians who live in urban areas, moving contrary to the rest of the national population.

According to a researcher at the IBGE Nilza Pereira, author of text accompanying the study, one of the hypotheses for the reduction in the percentage of indigenous people in the South, Southeast and cities are the return movements to traditional lands.

In recent decades, the country intensified calls "resume" when indigenous return to regions of origin and claim the demarcation of these territories. In some places, such as in the Northeast and in Mato Grosso do Sul, many still await the regularization of areas, conflicting processes and challenged in court.

In other cases, indigenous people may have returned the land that had completed its demarcation. Today 57.7% of Brazilian Indians living on Indian lands.

Another possibility, according to Pereira, is that in the South, Southeast and in the cities many people who declared themselves as indigenous have ceased to do so.

Although its indigenous population is in decline, the city of São Paulo ranks fourth in the list of municipalities with more Indians, with 13 thousand. Part of the group live in villages of the people Guarani Mbya on the outskirts of the city, in areas still in the process of demarcation.

The ranking is led by São Gabriel da Cachoeira, in northwestern Amazonas. The city is home to 29,000 indigenous people and was the first country to approve as official languages in addition to Portuguese, three native languages (Tukano, Baniwa and nheengatu).

The study shows how to live in an indigenous land influences the sociocultural indicators of people. Among the Indians who live in these areas, 57.3% speak at least one native language, index falling 9.7% between indigenous people who live in cities.

Even in the South, a region of intense colonization and territorial occupation, 67.5% of Indians living on Indian lands speak a native language, number second only to the Midwest (72.4%).

The fertility rate among women living in indigenous lands is also significantly higher than among those living in cities. On indigenous lands, there are 74 children aged 0 to 4 years for every 100 women, while in the cities there are only 20.

To Nilza Pereira, the IBGE, showing details of indigenous from different parts of the country, the study will be useful for planning differentiated public policies for these people. The data were also used in the preparation of various maps that make up the "National Atlas of Brazil Milton Santos."

Indian culture

The indigenous activist Denilson Baniwa, co-founder of Radio Yandê, says the BBC Brazil that the study helps to combat the lack of knowledge of indigenous peoples in Brazil.

Baniwa, who lives in Rio de Janeiro and is advertising, says often come across people who think that "the Indian is still that of 1500". According to the activist, many question why he is considered indigenous even speaking Portuguese or using the computer in their work.

"I answer that culture is not static, it will be adapted over time. And I ask them why they do not wear the same clothes worn by the Portuguese in 1500, why not speak that same Portuguese and why not use 1995 computers . "

Image copyright File Personal Image caption Co-founder of Radio Yandê,

Denilson Baniwa says there is 'great'

ignorance about cultural differences between indigenous peoples

For Baniwa, there is still widespread ignorance about the huge cultural differences between Brazilian indigenous peoples. He exemplifies citing two people from their homeland (the Rio Negro region of Amazonas), the Baniwa and Tucano.

"Comparing a baniwa a tukano is like comparing a French to a Japanese. They are people with language, habits and quite distinct physical characteristics, and that because they live in close proximity. Imagine the difference between a baniwa and Kaingang, one beyond the Rio people Grande do Sul? "

While fighting prejudice against indigenous people who, like him, live in cities, Baniwa states that each people should be free to decide how to relate to the rest of society.

"If a people understand that contact with the modern world will not be beneficial and would rather become more isolated in their land, we will fight for this decision is respected."

The Coliboaia Cave, Bihor County, Romania – The Oldest Cave Paintings in Europe. ---

Located in the Apuseni Natural Park, in Bihor County, what seemed to be an ordinary cave drew the attention of the most famous speleologists who have discovered here probably the most ancient cave paintings in Europe. They found about ten paintings depicting animal figures going back a few tens of thousands of years ago. The Coliboaia Cave is living proof that the prehistoric man dwelled here and thus left us an amazing archeological treasure.

The discoveries occurred in 2009 when some explorations in the Coliboaia Cave led to the finding of a few wall paintings which left the team of cavers gaping. Tudor Rus (Speodava Ştei), Mihai Besesek, Valentin Alexandru Radu, Roxana Laura Toiciu (Speowest Arad) and Marius Kenesz (Speo Club Zarand Brad) were part of the lucky team. Although the discovery was made in September 2009, it was announced only in May 2010.

The paintings found on the cave walls are all black and they are representations of animals, amongst which there is a bison, a horse, probably a prehistoric feline, two bear heads and two rhinos. It seems that the paintings were drawn by prehistoric people and coal was used. Several engravings were also discovered and bear bones were found scattered on the floor, which led to believe the cave was probably a sanctuary for the old bears who retired to end their lives here. This somehow explained certain signs on the cave walls and it is thought that while their stay in the cave the bears scratched the walls.

The Coliboaia Cave is crossed by an underground river which renders its visitation rather difficult, but luckily the paintings were discovered in a high gallery which protected them from the water which could have wiped them out. It is very likely that these are the only surviving pictures, the rest of them being potentially wiped out by the river waters.

These pictures first struck the cavers who ran into them and then amazed the worldwide archeological community. Thus, a five member French professional team joined the Romanian archeological team with a mission of determining the time period these paintings were made.

The French team was made up of two cavers (Marcel Meyssonnier and Valérie Plichon), a paleontologist specialized in the cave bear (Michel Philippe), a prehistorian (Françoise Prudhomme) and two cave art specialists (Jean Clottes and Bernard Gély).

The results of the five specialists research were as follows: the Coliboaia Cave paintings are the oldest of their kind not only in Europe, but worldwide and they go back to a very ancient period measured in thousands of years, that is between 23.000 and 35.000 years and belongs to the parietal art back in Gravettian or Aurignacian.

This was a breakthrough discovery for Central Europe attesting parietal art with an age so old, this being all the more interesting for Romanians since the discovery occurred on our national territory. The authenticity of the paintings was established by a process called comparative analysis, which involved the analysis of the paintings in the Coliboaia Cave compared to other cave paintings found across Europe.

Regarding those who drew these paintings on the cave walls, it seems they were cavemen and Jean Clottes believes they were hunter-gatherers. Judging by their areas of interest they did not seem to be familiar with neither agriculture nor livestock. From the point of view of the significance of these pictures, more than one interpretation arises. The French Henri Breuil claims that the paintings are symbolic hunting scenes.

A different interpretation is given by Jean Clottes who alongside other specialists believes that the cave paintings were actually made during religious ceremonies without knowing what the purpose of those ceremonies might have been. The Coliboaia Cave from Bihor County is not open to the public and tourism to avoid the risk of the paintings being destroyed. The cave is under conservation thanks to the Romanian Speleology Federation and the Apuseni Natural Park Administration. The cave is under the archeological authority of the "Tzarii Crishurilor" Museum in Oradea and under the administrative authority of the Bihor County Council.

The Coliboaia Cave is secured and gates were installed to protect the paintings which represent a great asset wealth.
