Protagonismo ou mimetismo? Como arquitetos lidam com o contexto. --- Protagonism or mimicry? As architects deal with the context

Protagonism or mimicry? As architects deal with the context
Any architect seeks recognition of his work; is the design of its projects, the construction quality or details that draw attention to their works. Unfortunately, if all architectures were designed to be protagonists, it would soon be impossible to assess the civic relevance of certain areas. Some buildings, such as the Jewish Museum by Daniel Libeskind, seem properly displaced, others seek to highlight the simple fact stand out, turning their backs to their rich historical contexts.
Although there is no single strategy for contextual integration, Kurt Kohlstedt argues that consideration of the historical context, either concordant or discordant way, will result in a richer and built surroundings. In his latest essay for 99% Invisible, Kohlstedt explores the myriad ways in which a new building can get involved with the existing context, highlighting successful and unsuccessful examples. It recognizes the difficulties of finding the right balance, stating that few projects can walk on the "fine line between contextual and contemporary."
In his article, Kohlstedt explains that it is not difficult to find examples of buildings that are so contemporary that end up in disjunction with their surroundings. Much of the work of Libeskind, including the Royal Ontario Museum and the Jewish Museum in Berlin, seems out of place against the backdrop of historic buildings. In both cases, the differentiation of the new building is justified by the program they contain. The shock of their presence contributes to become icons, as their unusual shapes generate public response. In his imediadas landscapes are obviously new and do not compete with other icons.
Kohlstedt delves into how the noco building phenomenon is especially apparent in Paris, where structures such as the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre extension by I.M.Pei were originally abhorred, but the public taste over time the canonized. This could be seen as a version of the "Bilbao Effect", in reference to Frank Gehry's Bilbao Guggenheim that catalyzed a wave of interest and tourism in the Spanish city of Bilbao. While the architecture can become an icon for the novelty of its form and expression to the same attempts to create icons are constantly put into practice without awareness of its impact or transition, the results can generate an urban landscape disregarded.
Extremists can also be harmful when it comes to mimicry. If a building tries too "fit", it can become nothing but a crude copy of your surroundings. Kohlstedt states that "historical mimicry and fachadismo can also be problematic for the readability of a city", while after building styles begin to create a replica city rather than the relevant structures.Save to My ArchDailyP Mill City Museum (left) adjacent to Humbolt Lofts in Minneapolis image for Kurt Kohlstedt. Fortunately, if there are two points on the spectrum extremism, among them there are endless possibilities in terms of integration and visibility. In his essay, Kohlstedt identifies several projects that can navigate their contexts in order to enrich the pool rather than depreciate it. All these projects show an awareness of the historical stratification that occurs when people can distinguish between the old and the new, and offer a logical answer to the problem in question.

--- Kiluanji kia Henda dreams of Art Museum in Angola

A pintura exige disciplina e dedicação.

Kiluanji kia Henda dreams of Art Museum in AngolaKiluanji kia Henda, one of the "voices" of the new generation of artists that has emerged abroad, with many invitations to exhibit their work, praised yesterday the work done by many artists, not only in Angola, but also in Africa , which have helped to show the identity and the changes in the contemporary collective and individual exhibitions.Jornal de Angola - As today evaluates the photograph in Angola?Kiluanji kia Henda - Photography in Angola is living a golden moment in terms of the number of people who are dedicated to this passion. Between lovers and professionals, the facility that currently has access to cameras allowed to become a more popular language. But it is true that much has to be done in terms of giving visibility to the work carried out. Social networks are certainly a very effective communication tool, but it is not enough, we need specialized publications in photography and also more exhibitions.Jornal de Angola - With the advent of new technologies, how to distinguish an artist from an amateur?Kiluanji kia Henda - The artist is committed to a particular audience and expose their work is critical to your practice. This also involves a social and economic responsibility. I know very good amateur photographers, but who have not intend to use photography as a language that allows them to communicate with a larger audience, or be represented by a whole structure or institutions that legitimize the artwork. Many people know how to write, but the decision to publish a book involves responsibilities that define our role in society, so the amateur does not cease to be an artist in your intimate space, but without this professional dimension that is extremely relevant when we decided to hold An image.Jornal de Angola - The market already have space for "artist of photography"?Kiluanji kia Henda - The picture entered the art market in the late twentieth century, and also due to to the use of this language by the artists of pop art and conceptual, in the decades of 60 and 70. But this time, not much risk to say that the picture is the most important artistic language for the dissemination of art made in Africa internationally. The list of African artists names that work with photography in artistic events and international awards, is much higher than in other artistic fields. The ease that photography offers us to interpret society and the construction of new imaginary, certainly had an impact on the market. But I confess that the fact that a reproducible environment, that is allowing us to make several editions of the same work, still causes a certain skepticism in the Angolan market, but often it is up to the artist to guide the market itself and its protagonists.Jornal de Angola - What projects can give impetus to the sector?Kiluanji kia Henda - It takes a greater investment in platforms that allow visibility to the picture, like other artistic media. The very recently the artist William Mampuya spoke of the importance of creating urgently, a museum or a center dedicated exclusively to art. I and many other artists found essential to create a museum that would give more dignity to class. On the other hand, I must say that I love to show my work in exhibitions, but they are ephemeral events and often for production issues are limiting as to the true potential of a professional photographer or an artist. I believe it would be extremely important work in publications. There is already a good number of photographers who are dedicated to this passion every day, the possibility to publish a book would immortalize this look, and above all leave a document that would be relevant to the visual education and the process of creating the generations come.Jornal de Angola - Photography is "the refuge of the frustrated painter?"Kiluanji kia Henda - No, I like painting but never thought to be a painter. The painting requires discipline and dedication. Unfortunately, there has always been a limiting looking as the idea of what is to be an artist. The classic definition goes through expressions such as painting or sculpture. I am happy to have been born in an era when the definition of artist is broad and what we mean by art can be constantly questioned.Jornal de Angola - The line dividing the professional artistic photographer is visible?Kiluanji kia Henda - The artist is also professional. The issue of professionalism is always linked to the economic factor and what we have in common is both depend photography to pay the bills. But, of course comparing the photographers working in advertising or journalism, it is evident that the artist has more freedom in the choice of subjects that decide to work, as well as in aesthetic and conceptual terms.Jornal de Angola - What is the "object of study" of your work?Kiluanji kia Henda - I am passionate about history, but as I am an artist and not a historian, it is me create new stories. I like to think of the relationship between the past and the future. In my work there is almost a rejection of this. I believe in art as a medium that allows us to live different times, so we are not required to be a mirror of reality around us. We can always find new interpretations of historical facts, but also fantasize about a possible future. It gives me a great pleasure to enjoy the dreamlike dimension in the universe art without completely neglecting their important social and political role.Jornal de Angola - What are your future plans?Kilunaji kia Henda - I'm currently working for a short-length film. I hope to do a solo exhibition soon in Luanda. Much of the exhibition consists of new works, some video and objects (sculpture). Also, I am conducting, since the beginning of the year, a major project that is presented in late September in Austria related to the refugee crisis in Europe. It was an invitation from the manager of the Multidisciplinary Arts Festival in Graz, held since 1968.
