Seated Buddha - The Toledo Museum of Art. --- Buda Sentado - O Museu de Arte de Toledo.

In this unusually large Tibetan gilded bronze sculpture, the Buddha is dressed in monastic clothing, which clings to his body.

The hems of his garment consist of elegant lines of beading that enliven the simple forms of the sculpture. Serene and confident, he sits with his legs crossed in a stable position of meditation similar to that of the Gandharan Buddha of twelve hundred years earlier (see 2000.11).

The hair is colored blue, arranged in tight snail shell curls, and topped by an ushnisha—a cranial knot—all characteristics dictated by religious texts and symbolizing supreme wisdom.Buddha displays the "earth touching gesture" or bhumisparsa mudra, which symbolizes his attainment of full enlightenment (nirvana).

The story of the enlightenment of the historical Buddha-Siddhartha Gautama, or Shakyamuni-is one of the most popular and inspiring subjects of Buddhist art. After sitting in meditation under the sacred Bodhi tree , Prince Siddhartha was tempted by the demon king Mara. The Buddha-to-be resisted and touched his right hand to mother earth, calling her to witness his rebuff of the demon and asking for the strength to achieve enlightenment.

She granted his wish by banishing Mara, thus allowing "Buddha" (meaning "Enlightened One") to enter his full manifestation.According to tradition, in the seventh century, the two Buddhist wives of the Tibetan king were the first to bring Buddhist images into Tibet.

Once converted, the king sent for texts and artists from the Indian region of Nepal. Because the Nepalese craftsmen were fine metalsmiths, most Tibetan images are hand-finished cast bronze. The forms derive from Indian sculpture of the Pala Dynasty (about 750-1200).

This dazzling, jewel-like bronze reveals the skill of Tibetan artists to maintain artistic inspiration while creating satisfying religious icons.

Camel and rider - MAO - Museo d'Arte Orientale, Turin. --- Camelo e cavaleiro - MAO - Museo d'Arte Orientale, Turim

This statue is characterised by the contrast in size between the large camel, depicted with realistic features, and the small and improbably slender camel driver seated between its humps.

The animal, which has a large escape hole under its belly, is standing on all four legs with its hooves resting on the corners of a thin unglazed base in the shape of a parallelogram.

The camel’s weight is shifted slightly backwards onto its hind legs, its neck is curved and its head turned upwards and slightly to the left. It almost seems as if the camel has been abruptly reined to a halt by the camel.

The beast’s body is muscular but slender, with pronounced fetlocks above its split hooves; its mouth is wide open in a roar, exposing its protruding canine teeth and tongue, with an upturned tip.

The long tail is folded around the right flank in relief. The camel’s woolly coat covers its head and half of its neck, its cheeks, the entire area below its throat, its tall humps, thighs and forearms. The rough texture of the coat is depicted in relief with deep and dense incisions. The animal’s coat is covered with amber glaze in shades ranging from yellow to brown, except for the eyes and the teeth, which are cream-colored. The humps protrude from an oval saddle cloth placed on the creature’s back, with a pleated lower border: the fabric is glazed with green and cream stains on an amber base, while the border is green.

The camel driver has his arms bent and his hands closed in fists, with holes drilled for the reins. His head is not glazed and was originally painted with cold colours but is now mostly grey. He is wearing a tall conical pointed hat, with an embossed arch on the front, that was originally painted brown.

The physical features, among which the mouth, still red, stands out, are typical of caricatures of foreigners, with a prominent nose, round eyes, etc. The camel driver’s clothes are glazed from the neck downwards.

He has an amber jacket with the right flap crossing over the left, a v-shaped neck and wide triangular green lapels ending in two small spheres; a kilt, tending to orange, with side vents; cream coloured knees, perhaps covered with tights, and high green pointed boots with green tips and short engraved lines. His body is slender, with legs pushed back and feet that seem disproportionately long.

This statue is very similar to a piece preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Materials of this type are normally dated to the 8th century, from sites in Shaanxi, such as Xi’an, and the Luoyang area. Sometimes the camel is removable or is replaced by a group of people, often male or female musicians.

Camelo e cavaleiro - MAO - Museo d'Arte Orientale, Turim

The online museum "Joconde" presents itself in Yverdon.

Museology A conference dedicated to the online publication of the collections and the future of museums on digital, takes place this Tuesday in Yverdon. Will the French example of the "Mona Lisa" inspire Swiss museums?

There is the masterpiece of Leonardo da Vinci, in front of which pass every year millions of visitors to the Louvre. And there is the other Mona Lisa, which has many clicks on the Internet. This impressive database digitizes and has made available to the public for twenty-five years the images and notices of the collections of the French museums. Its current director, Jeannette Ivain, will give a lecture tomorrow at the Musée d'Yverdon on the theme of digitization of collections. The presentation will be followed by a round table with Marc Atallah, director of the Maison d'Ailleurs, and Lionel Pernet, director of the Cantonal Museum of Archeology and History.

"Museums must evolve with their society and the transition from collections to digital will be one of the biggest challenges to face," warns France Terrier, director of the Museum of Yverdon. She continued: "The idea is to present what is being done in France and at home." The Joconde project dates back to 1975. In the simple online catalog of national museums, it was available on Minitel. It is now a museological portal with more than 550,000 records.

In Switzerland, several institutions are gradually putting their collections and deposits online. Like the museums of the city of Lausanne. "This is a way to show our catalogs to professionals, but also to educate the public, schools and those who move less easily," concludes France Terrier. One could even imagine virtual exhibitions. The possibilities are vast. "(24 hours)

The Dostoevsky Museum St.Petersburg. --- O Museu Dostoiévski em St.Petersburg.

Among Dostoevsky's numerous Petersburg addresses, the building on the corner of Kuznechny Lane and Dostoevsky Street (formerly Yamskaya) holds particular significance. The writer moved there with his family in the beginning of October 1878 and was to reside there until the day of his death, January 28, 1881. It was in this house that many many of Dostoevsky's contemporaries were to visit him, and his last novel, The Brothers Karamazov, was written. This simple, completely ordinary Petersburg apartment building, devoid of distinctive architectural features, has today become one of the most popular attractions in the city precisely because it was there that Dostoevsky lived and died.

Even before the Russian Revolution, articles had appeared in the press about the need to commemorate the house with a historical plaque and to open a museum dedicated to the life and work of the great writer on the premises. The first Dostoevsky Museum, however, opened in Moscow after the Revolution, in 1928, on the site of the former Mariinsky Hospital for the Poor (Bozhedomka Street), where the writer had spent his childhood years. Plans for Dostoevsky Museum in Petersburg (then Leningrad) remained unrealized.

The writer's widow, Anna Grigorievna Dostoevskaya, left Petersburg for her estate on the shores of the Black Sea in 1917.The following year she died there, completely alone, far from her children and grandchildren. Before leaving Petersburg, she had put all the remaining objects from Dostoevsky's house in storage, and they were subsequently lost. His valuable manuscripts, however, with few exceptions, ended up in state archives. During the next several decades, the house, given over for communal apartments in the Soviet years, underwent reconstruction that changed its appearance.

In those years the memory of Dostoevsky was not held in great favor. The writer's tragic fictional world and his social and religious convictions were incompatible with official Soviet ideology. It was hard to imagine the possibility of creating a museum in the house where he had lived. Even then, however, several writers and scholars wrote of Dostoevsky's significance in the history of Russian culture and of the need to create a museum in the city where he had spent so many years of his life.

The 150th anniversary of the great writer's birth, an event commemorated throughout the world, served as the catalyst for construction of the present museum. The F.M.Dostoevsky Literary-Memorial Museum in Leningrad was scheduled to open in 1971, in time for the occasion. The house on Kuznechny Lane was slated for major repairs, thus the opportunity arose to rebuild the writer's apartment based on archival plans of the house and memoirs of his contemporaries. His study was reconstructed according to a photograph taken by V.Taube after the writer's death. Next to the memorial apartment, a large literary exhibit dedicated to the life and work of Dostoevsky was opened.

The writer's grandson, Andrei Fyodorovich Dostoevsky (1908-1968), contributed significantly to the creation of the museum. The valuable materials he had gathered in memory of his famous grandfather were to become the basis of the museum's collection. Dostoevsky's grand-niece, Maria Savostianova (1894-1982), donated family heirlooms; the most valuable items of this collection are housed in the literary exhibit, as well as in the apartment itself. Much credit should also go to the museum's first director, Boris Fedorenko, and to Professor Nina Perlina, who now teaches in the United States, at Indiana University.

The 1971 opening of the Dostoevsky Museum was a major cultural event in Leningrad, and ever since, lovers of the writer's work from all countries of the world have continued to visit the house. Over the years the museum's colelction has increased many times over. At the present time it includes a large collection of graphic and applied art and a significant collection of photographs. The museum library holds about 24 000 volumes and a collection of theater posters and programs from various productions of Dostoevsky's works. In addition, there is also a small group of his own papers, containing in part the correspondence of his relatives and the literary manuscripts of his friends, including the poet A.Maikov. These collections are constantly growing, in large part thanks to the gifts of visitors, friends of the museum, and Dostoevsky scholars.

The Dostoevsky Museum contains a theater for viewing performances and movies based on Dostoevsky's works, and for literary gatherings. Every year in November, when the writer's birthday is observed, the museum hosts an international scholarly conference "Dostoevsky and World Culture", and a journal of the same name is published with the conference proceedings. Exhibits by modern artists are always on display in the exhibition rooms. The museum has become an inseparable part of cultural life in St.Petersburg today.
