Esporte Clube Bahia (known as Bahia and whose acronym is ECB) is a Brazilian soccer sports club in the city of Salvador, Bahia. It was founded on January 1, 1931 by former Bahian Tennis Club players and the Bahia Athletic Association, associations that had closed their football activities in the late 1920s.

He was the first club to win a national competition, the 1959 Brazil Cup, against Santos, a tournament created to appoint the Brazilian representative in the newly created Copa Libertadores of America. Therefore, the club was also the first Brazilian representative to participate in an edition of Libertadores in 1960. In 1988, the Bahian tricolor won his second Brazilian title, this time defeating Internacional. With such titles, Bahia is the only club outside the South-Southeast axis to hold two national titles of the main division of Brazilian football. The club was twice Brazilian runner-up in 1961 and 1963. In its participation in the Libertadores of 1989, Bahia reached the quarterfinals, a feat that no other North-Northeast club has achieved until then.

The club also adds 2 Copas do Nordeste and 46 Bahian Championships, being the second largest state champion in Brazil, losing only to the ABC of Natal which adds 53 titles. Bahia for a long time conquered the hegemony of the state championship, to the point of having been a seven-time champion, from 1973 to 1979. But despite the victorious résumé, Bahia bittered during the 2000s one of the worst periods of history. In addition to winning only one state title (in 2001), he was relegated to Serie B of the Brazilian Championship in 2003 and to Serie C in 2005. The club returned to the second national division in 2008 and the main division in 2011.

He was cofounder of the Club of 13 (in 1987), which was the thirteen most important associations of Brazilian football and that represented 95% of the Brazilian fans at the time.

With a little more than 80 years of existence, Tricolor da Boa Terra has become one of the most popular clubs in the state and North-Northeast of the country, holding the biggest crowd among the clubs in the region. In Bahia, about 22% of the fans cheer for Bahia, against 17% of rival Vitória.

It has as its official colors blue, white and red, in honor of the flag of its state of origin. State, even, that is remembered in the name of the club, the colors, the shield, the flag and, also, in the bleachers. The tricolor mascot is the Superman, popular comic book character.

Bahia sent its games in Campo da Graça until the inauguration of Fonte Nova, which in 2007 was banned, in 2010 demolished for retirement and, since 2013, already as Fonte Nova Arena, returned to be the field command of the club. In the period of his absence, Bahia sent their games in the Pituaçu Stadium, a home that, in the absence of the Arena, always houses the tricolor well, a fact that gives him great friendliness of the fans, especially in 2010 that was marked in the life of the club For symbolizing the return of the club to the national scene after relegation in 2003.

Its main rival is the Esporte Clube Vitória with whom it stars in the classic known as Ba-Vi, a classic that Bahia has an advantage, either in number of wins or in number of goals scored, but since the 90's, this historic advantage Was drastically reduced. Still, it is one of the most important in Brazilian football. However, Bahia plays historic classics with other traditional Salvadoran clubs that have had their glory days, such as Galicia (the Classic of Colors), Botafogo-BA (the Pot Classic), and Ypiranga (the Classic of Multitudes). Regionally, there is also a lot of rivalry against Sport.

According to the company BDO RCS Auditores Independentes, the club brand is the fifteenth highest value in Brazil, surpassing 55 million reais, being the largest in the Northeast. In a new survey conducted in 2013, the Bahia brand persisted being the most valuable, being, this time, at 66 million.

Martha’s Vineyard Museum, is a walking example of what I believe we as human beings are here on this earth to do.

So many events happened last week that foster a welcoming environment on the Island and at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. There are many individuals to thank for making all of it possible.

I am profoundly grateful for Elaine Weintraub, and for the space she has created for the Brazilian students. Last Friday was the seventh Brazilian- American lunch at the high school, and my first time attending. I had such a blast cooking with the kids, watching them come together and conquer an incredible task, and all because Elaine continuously embraces the differences and similarities in American and Brazilian culture.

Ann Ducharme, education director at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, is a walking example of what I believe we as human beings are here on this earth to do. Once a month she brings different elements of the museum’s art and artifacts into Corinne Kurtz’s history class to promote the ability to learn English and globalization through art. On Thursday, Ann and Allie Walker brought cookies, frosting, and other cooking supplies to teach my students about American holidays, and on Friday my class had the utmost honor to switch on the Edgartown Lighthouse Christmas lights.

It was so touching to watch the museum’s director, Phil Wallis, do the countdown in Portuguese. If you would like to see it, the museum posted it on their social media accounts (Instagram and Facebook), and it is a lot of fun to watch. Thank you to everyone at the museum for all that you do for our students.

Below are some of what the students have said about the various events that they were involved in last week:

Making cookies

“Helping make ginger cookies was an experience that I have never really had before. I’ve never made ginger cookies with my family. What was really interesting was that I always get separated from the Brazilians and put with a different group. Being around all of the Brazilians having a fun time was a great experience.”

—Reinaldo Dos Santos

“Helping make the ginger cookies was a great experience. I don’t hang out with the new Brazilians that much, so it was nice to see what they thought of the tradition. Unfortunately, I couldn’t go light up the lighthouse because my Minnesinger concert was that day. Being a Minnesinger is great. We all became a family so quickly.”

—Victoria Miranda

Lighting the Christmas lights at the lighthouse

“I feel so honored that we, the Brazilian students, were chosen to light the Christmas lights at the lighthouse, one of the most visited places on the Island. It was an honor”

—Akilah Moreira

“We are happy and thankful for the opportunity.”

—Nattielly Dias

Brazilian-American Friendship lunch

“The lunch is an important event. It helps us show our culture and how we interact with others. I had the opportunity to invite a friend, and he was thankful I chose him. We also show a bit of our traditional food.”

—Schmeichel Oliveira

“I think that the Brazilian-American lunch is a great event, because there you become friends with other people. I heard about it a lot last year. This year was my first year getting invited to it, and I enjoyed it. I became friends with a lot of upperclassmen and Brazilians I had never talked to before.” —Matheus Brito

“It was my first time taking part in the Brazilian-American Friendship lunch. It was fun being there with Brazilians and Americans. It was also fun to be able to show a bit of our culture to our American friends. I appreciate how respectful they were, and how into it they got. I’ve lived on the Island my entire life, so I am usually more involved in the American events. It was great to be able to celebrate both cultures.”
