Historic Center of Grão Mogol is listed as a cultural heritage of Minas Gerais.

The State Council of Cultural Heritage of Minas Gerais - Conep approved on Tuesday (20), the tipping of the Historic Center of Grão Mogol. Located in the northern region of Minas, the Historical Center joins other cultural assets already protected by tipping and recognized as cultural heritage of Minas Gerais.

Angelo Oswaldo, Secretary of State for Culture of Minas Gerais, highlights the importance of the historical core for the miners. "Grão Mogol is a significant historical city, with patrimonial and cultural values very characteristic of the mining region, becoming one of the important points of exploration of the diamond. The municipality has developed a socio-cultural process of great significance that is now recognized as the property of all miners, "said the Secretary. He added that the recognition of the Historic Center of Grão Mogol as a cultural good of Minas Gerais should be received with great joy by the whole Grao-Mogolense community.

The president of Iepha-MG, Michele Arroyo, stressed that the Institute's operations in the North of Minas Gerais contributed to the tipping of the Historic Center of Grão Mogol. "In recent years, Iepha has been working intensively in partnership with local communities and universities in order to research and understand the São Francisco River region as a cultural heritage of Minas Gerais. The tipping of Grão Mogol reaffirms a moment of the Iepha to look at the diversity of the historical centers that the state possesses ", emphasized Michele Arroyo, noting also that this context allows to strengthen the dialogue with the public power in relation to the preservation of the cultural patrimony of the city .

A member of Conep, professor at the University of Montes Claros, Denilson Meireles, also spoke about the relevance of the work carried out by Iepha-MG in the North of Minas Gerais. For him, the region receives well-deserved recognition from the State of Minas Gerais. "The Cultural Inventory of the São Francisco River, produced by the team of Iepha, added to the tipping of the Historic Center of Grão Mogol demonstrate how much the North of Minas contributes with its diversity for the strengthening of the mining culture", reported the professor.

In 2016, Conep held six meetings, two of which were ordinary and three extraordinary. Of these meetings, the following deliberations were highlighted: the registration of the headquarters building of the former Banco Mineiro da Produção, deliberation on perimeter for the protection of the historic centers of Januária, Perdões and Ouro Fino and the tipping of the Historical Center of Grão Mogol.

The Council reconvenes on January 6 (Day of Kings) to vote on the request for recognition of Folias de Minas as a cultural heritage of immaterial nature in Minas Gerais.

Grand Mogol

The Historic Center of Grão Mogol constitutes material heritage that, at present, is a reference of the occupation process of the North of Minas Gerais and documents constructive aspects of the vernacular architecture of Minas Gerais and the way of being and living of its inhabitants.

Its formation, at the intersection of troop and merchandise paths that crossed the ancient Serra de Santo Antônio do Itacambiruçu towards Bahia, still in the 18th century, originates from the clandestine extraction of the diamond in the waterways near the Diamond District. The isolated location, difficult to reach, has created a sense of belonging and autonomy that persist in its population.

The architecture of the Historic Center represents the mixture between the typical construction system of the coast and the surrounding landscape, characterized by the extensive use of the local stone. Formal simplicity and technical despotism are characteristic of the nucleus, peripheral to the richer urban centers. Having passed through the different historical cycles of mining economy, including the decay of mining, Grão Mogol preserves, in its structure, the urban scale and the modesty of that moment of conquest of the territory.
