SYDNEY.- The NSW Government’s $244 million funding commitment to support the expansion of the Art Gallery of New South Wales will transform the much-loved and historic Gallery into one of the world’s greatest art museums.
Welcoming the landmark announcement made today by Arts Minister Don Harwin, Art Gallery of NSW director Dr Michael Brand said he was delighted with the funds. The expansion will significantly increase space for the Gallery to exhibit art, and is expected to attract two million visitors annually.
“This is a remarkable day for the Gallery and the Australian arts community,” Dr Brand said.
“Our expanded Gallery will deliver an iconic building that combines art, architecture and landscape in an extraordinary way, and in one of the most breathtaking locations in the world,” Dr Brand added.
Combined with government funds of $244 million, the Art Gallery of NSW capital campaign, to be officially launched later this year, will raise $100 million in philanthropic support for the project of which $70 million has been pledged.
The expansion will see more of the Gallery’s iconic collection, worth $1.3 billion, on display. It will improve significantly the State’s ability to attract more major international art exhibitions to NSW.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art will be front and centre in the expanded Gallery, showcased and celebrated with the prominence it deserves.
The Sydney Modern Project will deliver wider economic benefit to the NSW economy of over $1 billion over the next 25 years and the creation of up to 242 full-time jobs in NSW.
Art Gallery of NSW President of the Board, David Gonski AC, said the extraordinarily generous public and private financial support the Gallery has received to date is testament to the value and importance placed on an expanded state art museum for NSW.
“This decision by the NSW Government is to be applauded and its merit, in my opinion, will be seen and enjoyed by generations to come,” Mr Gonski said.
The expansion will deliver an architectural landmark by Pritzker Prize-winning architects, SANAA. The Gallery has worked with SANAA for the past two years to evolve the design concept.
The design concept will continue to be refined until the planned submission of a State Significant Development Application in the coming months.
Major construction of the project will commence in 2019 with the expansion due for completion in 2021, in time for the 150th anniversary of the Gallery’s founding in 1871.

SYDNEY.- O compromisso de financiamento de US $ 244 milhões do Governo da NSW para apoiar a expansão da Galeria de Arte de Nova Gales do Sul transformará a galeria muito amada e histórica em um dos maiores museus de arte do mundo.
Congratulando-se com o anúncio histórico feito hoje pelo ministro das Artes, Don Harwin, o diretor da Galeria de Arte do NSW, Michael Brand, disse estar encantado com os fundos. A expansão aumentará significativamente o espaço para a Galeria exibir arte, e espera-se atrair dois milhões de visitantes por ano.
"Este é um dia notável para a Galeria e a comunidade artística australiana", disse o Dr. Brand.
"Nossa Galeria expandida vai entregar um edifício icônico que combina arte, arquitetura e paisagem de forma extraordinária e em um dos locais mais deslumbrantes do mundo", acrescentou o Dr. Brand.
Combinado com fundos governamentais de US $ 244 milhões, a campanha da Galeria de Arte da NSW, que será lançada oficialmente no final deste ano, elevará US $ 100 milhões em apoio filantrópico para o projeto, dos quais US $ 70 milhões foram prometidos.
A expansão verá mais da coleção icônica da Galeria, no valor de US $ 1,3 bilhão, em exibição. Melhorará significativamente a capacidade do Estado de atrair mais grandes exposições internacionais de arte para a NSW.
O aborígene e a arte do Ilha do Estreito de Torres serão a frente e o centro da Galeria expandida, exibida e celebrada com a proeminência que merece.
O Sydney Modern Project proporcionará benefícios econômicos mais amplos para a economia da NSW de mais de US $ 1 bilhão nos próximos 25 anos e a criação de até 242 empregos em tempo integral em NSW.
A galeria de arte do presidente do Conselho de Administração da NSW, David Gonski AC, disse que o apoio financeiro público e privado extraordinariamente generoso que a Galeria recebeu até o momento é um testemunho do valor e da importância atribuída a um museu de arte estatal expandido para a NSW.
"Esta decisão do governo do NSW deve ser aplaudida e seu mérito, em minha opinião, será visto e apreciado pelas gerações vindouras", disse Gonski.
A expansão proporcionará um marco arquitetônico pelos arquitetos vencedores do prêmio Pritzker, o SANAA. A Gallery trabalhou com a SANAA nos últimos dois anos para desenvolver o conceito de design.
O conceito de design continuará a ser refinado até a apresentação planejada de uma Aplicação de Desenvolvimento Significativo Estadual nos próximos meses.
A construção principal do projeto começará em 2019 com a expansão a ser completada em 2021, a tempo do 150º aniversário da fundação da Galeria em 1871.
