Sara Hildén Art Museum. City of Tampere. - Museu de Arte Sara Hildén. Cidade de Tampere. - collaboration: Lilit Minasyan

The Sara Hildén Art Museum, which is the permanent home of the collection of modern and contemporary art, Finnish and foreign, owned by the Sara Hildén Foundation, is maintained by the City of Tampere. Sara Hildén Foundation Collection currently amounts to some 5000 works. It is thus a comprehensive collection which presents a broad cross section of the development in modern art over the last forty years.

The Sara Hildén Foundation continues to be responsible for expanding the collection, and places its acquisitions in the art museum.

Building

The art museum was designed by the Tampere architect Pekka Ilveskoski and associates. The total floor area is some 2,500 square metres, of which 1,500 square metres are used for exhibitions.

The building is situated on a northern slope of the Särkänniemi peninsula overlooking a shoreline of great natural beauty. Good use has been made of the topographical features of the site, with the upper level, from which the building is approached, devoted to offices and galleries for paintings, while sculptures, the coffee room and storage space occupy the lower level. Large windows afford an open view over the grounds with their sculptures and the expanse of Lake Näsijärvi. The Särkänniemi area with its Observation Tower and numerous other attractions is a major Finnish leisured centre.

The Sara Hildén Foundation was established in 1962. At that time Mrs. Sara Hildén (1905–1993), a Tampere art collector and businesswoman, handed over her art collection to the Foundation which was named after her. The collection consisted principally of works by the Finnish modern artist Erik Enroth and dating from the period 1945–1962.

Once the Foundation had been established, a conscious effort was made to expand the collection. With leading Finnish art experts to help her, Mrs. Hildén herself engaged actively in the acquisition of new works. From the very beginning the aim was to create a collection of modern international art.

The primary function of the Sara Hildén Art Museum is to maintain and place on exhibition works belonging to the Sara Hildén Foundation. The art museum also arranges changing exhibitions. These include the presentation of Finnish contemporary art and notably prestigious overviews of international modernism. The activities of the art museum also focus on research work contributing to the arranging of exhibitions, on publications and on educational missions in the field of modern art aimed at children and young people.

A cultura e o amor devem estar juntos.
Vamos compartilhar.

Culture is not what enters the eyes and ears,
but what modifies the way of looking and hearing.

Naquela época, a Sra.
