- Gavaretchina, lugar interessante. - Interesting place Gavaretchina.

Joaquim Aurelio Barreto Nabuco de Araújo

Writer and diplomat, he was born in Recife, PE, on August 19, 1849, and died in Washington, USA, on January 17, 1910. He attended the preliminary sessions of installation of the Brazilian Academy, founder of Cadeira nº 27, Patron of Maciel Monteiro. Appointed Secretary General of the Institution at the session of January 28, 1897, he held the position until 1899 and from 1908 to 1910.

He was the son of Senator José Tomás Nabuco de Araújo and Ana Benigna Barreto Nabuco de Araújo, sister of the Marquis of Recife, Francisco Pais Barreto. He studied humanities at Colégio Pedro II, graduating in letters. In 1865, he went to São Paulo, where he completed his first three years of law and graduated in Recife in 1870. He was first classed in London, then in Washington from 1876 to 1879.

Attracted by politics, he was elected deputy general by his province, and then resided in Rio. His entry to the Chamber marked the beginning of the campaign in favor of Abolitionism, which soon became a national cause, in defense of which he grew so much. From 1881 to 1884, Nabuco traveled through Europe and in 1883, in London, published O Abolicionismo. On his return to the country, he was again elected MP for Pernambuco, resuming a prominent position in the abolitionist campaign, which five years later was a success. When the Republic was proclaimed in 1889, it remained with its monarchist convictions. He retired from public life, dedicating himself to his work and study.

In this phase of spontaneous separation, Joaquim Nabuco lived in Rio de Janeiro, practicing law and doing journalism. He frequented the writing of the Revista Brasileira, where he established relations and friendship with high figures of Brazilian literary life, Machado de Assis, José Veríssimo, Lúcio de Mendonça, from whom the Brazilian Academy of Letters was born in 1897.

During this period, Joaquim Nabuco wrote two great works: "A Statesman of the Empire", a biography of his father, but which is in fact the political history of the country and a memoir, "Minha Formação", a classic work of Brazilian literature .

In 1900, President Campos Sales succeeded in persuading him to accept the position of extraordinary envoy and plenipotentiary minister on a special mission in London, on the issue of Brazil and England, regarding the limits of English Guiana. In 1901, he was accredited in ordinary mission, as ambassador of Brazil in London and, from 1905, in Washington. In 1906, he came to Rio de Janeiro to preside over the 3rd. Pan American Conference. In his company came the American Secretary of State Elihu Root. Both were defenders of Pan-Americanism, in the sense of a broad and effective continental approach. In 1909, he made an official trip to Havana to attend the restoration of Cuba's national government.

Great was his prestige before the people and the American government, expressed in expressions of admiration of the most eminent men, starting with President Theodore Roosevelt and Secretary of State Root; And at the reception of the Universities, in which he gave a series of lectures on Brazilian culture. When he died in Washington, his body was taken with exceptional solemnity to the cemetery of the American capital, and then was transferred to Brazil, on the North Caroline cruiser. From Rio de Janeiro he was transported to Recife, the city that saw him born. On September 28, 1915, Recife inaugurated, in one of its public squares, its statue.
