The Mariinski Theater (Russian: Мариинский театр, is a historical theater, opera and ballet, located in the Russian city of St. Petersburg.

The Mariinski Theater (Russian: Мариинский театр, is a historical theater, opera and ballet, located in the Russian city of St. Petersburg.

Opened in 1860, it became the most prominent Russian theater in the musical area during the nineteenth century, stage of the debut of many masterpieces by Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov. With the retirement of Yuri Temirkanov in 1988, the maestro Valery Gergiev happened to occupy the functions of general direction.

The Imperial Opera and Ballet Theater in St. Petersburg was established in 1783 in the mandate of Catherine the Great. Originally the ballet and opera performances were performed at the Karl Knipper Theater in Tsaritsa Meador. The Hermitage Theater, next to the Winter Palace, was used as a place for performances for the elite audience, the empress's aristocratic guests.

A permanent theater was built for the new opera and ballet company and was designed by Antonio Rinaldi and opened in 1783. Known as the Bolshoi Kamenny Imperial Theater, it was situated in the Theater Square. In 1836, the theater was redesigned by the architect Albert Cavo (son of Catterino Cavos, an operas composer) and served as the main theater of the Imperial Ballet and for opera. On January 29, 1849, it was inaugurated. It was twice the size of the old theater. And the structure had the neo-Byzantine style. Ten years later it was rebuilt by Cavos, had the capacity of 1,625 spectators and an Italian style. The theater was again reopened on October 2, 1860 with the performance of Mikhail Glinka's A Life by the Czar. The new theater was named Mariinsky by the Empress Maria Alexandrovna.

The Mariinsky Theater (predecessor of the Bolshoi Kamenny Theater) was the scene of many premieres of Mikhail Glinka, Modest Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky. It was also the scene of many ballet performances such as Sleeping Beauty in 1890, The Nutcracker in 1892, Raymonda in 1898 and definitely revived Swan Lake in 1895.

When the theater was designated as the main stage of the Opera and Imperial Ballet in 1886, it was extensively renovated. With a famous reinauguration in the mandate of the Emperor Alexander III, with the presentation of Les Pilules Magiques of Ludwig Minkus.

Other premieres that took place there, already in the reformed theater, were Boris Godunov of Mussorgsky, The Golden Cockerel of Rimsky-Korsakov, The Lady of Spades and Iolanthe of Tchaikovsky, Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella of Prokofiev and Spartacus of Khachaturian.

The theater was home to great businessmen, conductor and musicians. Ballet Russo Academy Ballet Russian School, Ballet School Mariinsky, grew the career of Mathilde Kschessinskaya, Olga Preobrajenskaya, Anna Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina, Vaslav Nijinsky, Marina Semenova, George Balanchine, Galina Ulanova, Rudolf Nureyev, Natália Makarova, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Irina Kolpakova, Galina Mezentseva, Altynai Asylmuratova, Ulyana Lopatkina, Diana Vishneva and Svetlana Zakharova.

Under the mandate of Yuri Temirkanov, who was the main conductor from 1976 to 1988, the Opera Company continued to make innovative productions, both from modern works and classic Russian operas. Since 1988, when Temirkanov retired from the company, maestro Valery Gergiev took his place. With Giergiev the company had an era of excellence and creativity.

Gergiev is in charge of the Opera and Ballet Company as artistic director. Since his tenure at the Opera Company began in 1988 (especially since 1993), the impact of the opera there is enormous. He first reorganized the company's operations and established connections with many of the world's largest and best opera houses, including the Royal Opera House, Metropolitan Opera, Opéra Bastille, La Scala, La Fenice, Tel Aviv Opera, Washington National Opera and San Francisco Opera. And today, the opera company tours many of these cities.

Valery Gergiev (Director of the Company) and Vladimir Putin (Russian President)
Gergiev has also innovated the Russian opera concerts: in 1989 the Mussorgsky festival took place. Similarly, many Prokofiev operas were performed in the late 1990s. Operas of non-Russian composers began to be performed in their original languages. The Annual White Nights Star Festival in St. Petersburg began with Gergiev in 1993 that placed Marrinsky on the cultural map. In the same year, they produced the opera La Forza del Destino by Verdi, with the set, clothes and scenery equal to that of their debut in St. Petersburg in 1863. Since then, this has become a feature of the White Nights Festival.

At the beginning of the 21st century the Mariinsky Orchestra with Valery Gergiev's direction emerged to the world scene, performing recitals in the main concert halls of Europe and the United States.

Currently the company has a list of:

22 Sopranos (among them the world-famous Anna Netrebko)
13 Mezzo-Sopranos (among them the world-famous Olga Borodina)
23 Tenors
8 Baritones
14 Low

In 2003, the postmodern French architect Dominique Perrault won a competition to design the new theater.

Tinha o dobro do tamanho do antigo teatro. E a estrutura tinha o estilo neo-bizantino.

23 Tenores
8 Barítonos
14 Baixos

MUMMIES weren’t the only bodies preserved in the tombs of ancient Egypt. These biscuit beetles were discovered inside a loaf of funerary bread collected in the early 1800s, possibly from a tomb in the necropolis of ancient Thebes.

Such tombs were cool, extremely dry and sealed off from the outside world. “This slowed down in a major way the natural processes of microbial activity and decay,” says Caroline Cartwright of the British Museum in London. The conditions preserved everything from coffin wood to the ceremonial bread — and its stowaways.

The beetles, and their final meal, were buried 3000 to 3500 years ago. Along with other foods like fruit and cake, loaves were left in ancient Egyptian tombs as symbolic offerings, intended to feed the deceased in the afterlife.

To find out what ingredients were in the ritual bread, Cartwright and her colleague John Taylor took images of more than 20 ancient loaves using one of the Department of Scientific Research’s scanning electron microscopes – catching these bugs in the process.

Some of the loaves were made with ingredients we would consider inedible today, like chaff and straw. Others were made of barley or wheat, and some contained fruits.

The bugs pictured are biscuit beetles, about 2 to 3 millimetres long, but the loaf also housed adult grain beetles and fragments of larvae belonging to both species.

Essas tumbas eram frescas, extremamente secas e isoladas do mundo exterior.
