Brazilian biologist to receive international award for female scientists. --- Bióloga brasileira receberá prêmio internacional para mulheres cientistas.

Fernanda de Pinho Werneck studies the adaptation of reptiles to climate change.

Fernanda Werneck is a researcher at the National Institute of Amazonian Research (INPA) -

According to data from the Boston Consulting Group, a girl graduating from high school has an average 35% chance of pursuing a degree in science, 18% chance to graduate, 8% 2% to become a doctor in science. For men, these figures are respectively 77%, 37%, 19% and 6%. In Brazil, the biologist Fernanda Werneck, 35, managed to discredit the statistics and will have her professional trajectory recognized by an international prize for women scientists, on 21 March in Paris.

Rising Talents, from L'Oreal's For Women in Science program, awards each year 15 young female scientists from all regions of the world. This will be the second prize received by Fernanda through Women in Science - in 2016, she was also awarded the prize for Women in Science, which has a partnership with Unesco and the Brazilian Academy of Science.

A graduate of the University of Brasília (UnB), in addition to a doctorate in the United States, Brigham Young University, Goiás, who grew up in Brasilia, is developing a long-term research project at the National Institute of Research in Amazonia (INPA). Researcher. In it, it seeks to understand the adaptation of reptiles, especially lizards, to climate change, in collaboration with several scientists from Brazil and abroad. Directly from Manaus, where she works, Fernanda talked with O GLOBO about her professional and personal trajectory - and how this changes as a woman.

The discussion about gender inequality in the professions often goes through the professional choice that men and women end up still deciding in school. How was your experience?

For me, it was very natural, I always liked sciences and biology. I have had all the support at home, fortunately, because we know that often, in the home, it has the stigma of women pursuing more social and human careers, and the boys to the exact ones. I graduated in biological sciences, where I participated in the scientific initiation during all the years. I went to the master's degree and, in the middle of it, I got pregnant from Iara.

How is it to reconcile motherhood with academic life?

A scientific career is not easy. It takes many hours, many trips. Many times we can not accommodate with a routine. I am fortunate to have a family that helps me a lot, including because my husband is a scientist and a biologist as well. And our work requires going to the field, often where there is no communication, so we turn to take care of it. Today, my daughter is 11 years old.

But I see many colleagues who have a harder time reconciling motherhood and career than I did, because sometimes motherhood came at a career moment that demanded much, or sometimes the pregnancy was more delicate ...

When I say that I have not had many bad weather, I mean my most direct nucleus, my family, my counselor ... But I came to hear some things back then that I did not understand could be related to the genre. I thought it was personal. For example: "Ah, this project is very audacious, you will not be able to do this ...", or people saying that I could not have written that work by myself. Today I imagine that hardly a colleague would have heard this kind of thing.

Within the biological sciences, the difference in access between boys and girls is not so great. But as the career procuide, this is reversed. In the master's degree, in the doctorate, something happens that the women do not proguidem so much in the race. Whether you will look at postdoctoral or effective positions, there are many more men than women.

Can you tell us a little bit about your current research?

We are interested in studying the biodiversity of reptiles and amphibians in the ecotone, or the transition, between the Amazon and Cerrado. This region almost coincides almost with the arch of deforestation. The main objective is to quantify the sensitivity of lizards, which rely on external heat sources to control their internal temperature, to climate change. These animals are very susceptible. The chances are that lizard populations will collapse.

How do you do this quantification?

We try to understand the genetic diversity of these populations using ultramodern sequencing technologies, the so-called next generation sequences, which look at various regions of the individuals genome. We then look for signs that the selection of the environment is determining the genetic profile of those populations. For example, in the Cerrado, it appears that species tolerate higher temperatures than those in the interior of the Amazon.

Is global warming already being felt in this region that you study?

Today we have an amount of scientific evidence that allows us to say that this is not a possibility, it is a fact that we need to deal with. And it is not only a change in temperature, it is also a change in the patterns of precipitation, in the length of the seasons, among others.

Today, what is the degree of threat to the lizards between the Cerrado and the Amazon?

Among the main causes are habitat loss and fragmentation by deforestation, climate change and other factors such as invasive species and illegal trade of some species. And these factors work synergistically. We also have the veiled threat of not knowing exactly the distribution of species. It turns out that we are losing rich regions and unique species that we do not know.

Anne Frank Museum launches voice assistant on Facebook. --- Museu Anne Frank lança assistente de voz no Facebook.

Far from the famous pages of the diary, web surfers will be able to chat with the Anne Frank House Museum on Facebook through the chatbot, which the Amsterdam institution launched on Tuesday to spread the story of the famous teenager who died in a camp concentration.

"In today's world, Anne Frank's story is more relevant than ever," said museum director Ronald Leopold, asserting that it is the first "chatbot" - an artificial intelligence computer program - of this kind in one Museum in the world.

"More than 70 years after the war, half of our visitors are under 30," he adds, "so we must find new ways to provide a reliable historical context to create a connection to history."

A chatbot is a computer program with which users can chat directly through Facebook Messenger. It is hoped that the program, based on artificial intelligence, will improve with each question asked by the netizens.

For now, this wizard offers users different options: "Want to know more about the opening hours of the museum?"; "About Anne Frank's story?"; "About your diary or the secret annex where the Frank family was hiding?"; "About your arrest?"; "About your life in Amsterdam before the war?"

"Generations that have lived through the horrors of war are gradually disappearing," said Prince Constantijn, brother of the current king of the Netherlands, who was at the program's launch. "It's important to find new ways to tell a story that should never be forgotten," he said.
