Several archaeologists announced a historic discovery in Mexico City.

MEXICO CITY - A group of Mexican archaeologists announced Wednesday the discovery of the Temple of Ehécatl, the god of the wind, and a court of Teotlachco (the ball game). Both structures were buried behind the Metropolitan Cathedral in the heart of the Historic Center of Mexico City.

Federal officials and researchers at the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) showed the images of the findings during a press conference.

The excavation below the Hotel Catedral, one block from the Zócalo, began several years ago driven by the federal law on monuments and archeological zones.

The ball court is the first to be discovered in the Historic Center since the excavation of the Templo Mayor in 1978.

Archaeologist Raul Barrera, supervisor of the Urban Archeology Program, explained that the temple that was just discovered was built in honor of Ehécatl, a god "who with his benign winds swept the skies and attracted rain."

Eduardo Matos Moctezuma, an archaeologist researcher at the National Institute of Anthropology and History, said the group was able to identify the temple by the figure of the structure despite not digging the entire area.

It is contemplated that the public can go down to the temple floor to observe the nearby structure and other archaeological objects that have been found in the place.

"We are going to make a site museum, it will practically be the whole space, where the visitor will be able to appreciate part of the ball game and the Temple of Ehécatl," said Barrera.
