Cyprus Archaeological Museum. Theoni Xanthi of XZA Architects has been selected as the winner in the competition to design the new archaeological museum in Cyprus.

Composed of three layers corresponding to Memory, the City, and the River, Xanthi's proposal took first place in a competition that sought a new urban space to celebrate Nicosia’s history and archaeology. The project is situated in close proximity to the medieval city walls, enabling it to play a key role in altering and upgrading the existing urban and green spaces that surround it.

“The new archaeological museum—within today’s globalized reality—seeks to express its identity through the elements that gave birth to the Cypriot civilization," explains Xanthi. "Not only the materials, but also the characteristics of Mediterranean life and culture (the proximity of the natural, the meeting centers, the sightlines to the landscape, the search for dense shade etc) that are still alive in the everyday life of the locus... It aims to be a landmark, a cultural installation that would nurture new environments and behaviors, and act as a revitalizing gesture to the city.”

Three horizontal zones aim to combine past archaeological finds with the present, creating the apparently hovering building. The museum is located in the uppermost "Memory" layer, while the intermediate "City" layer “welcomes the city” and the bottom "River" layer accommodates everyday programs. Similarly, the museum and permanent exhibitions themselves are also fragmented in three ways.

The first of these is TOPOS, which highlights the relationship between Cyprus' first settlers and the land they inhabited. The connection between land and water is the focus of SEA, while the third category, COSMOS, explores the interaction between different Mediterranean cultures.

Formally, the three buildings comprising the museum respond to the triangular plot upon which it is located by creating views towards the river and the city, extending the sightlines of the environment. At ground level is the public realm, allowed to pass through the elevated buildings and creating spaces such as yards, a garden, an atrium and a public square. The entrance is demarcated by a bioclimatic canopy, as the design aims to encompass structural, urban, functional and bioclimatic demands.

A “museological narration” is created through the organization of exhibition spaces, with the mezzanine level operating at a human scale and numerous small exhibitions integrated into the envelope, creating opportunities for diverse media displays.

Away from the eyes of the population five years ago, Locomotiva 58 will return to active duty on August 15 at noon to celebrate the 363-year anniversary of Sorocaba. The historic maria-fumaça will travel a mile along the old Votorantim Electric Railway (Efev), between Paula Souza Station and Fábrica Santa Maria, in Vila Hortência.

The exhibition is held by the Secretariat of Culture and Tourism (Secultur), in partnership with the Association of Railway Preservation of the Sorocabana Excerpt (MPF-Sorocabana) - a non-profit organization focused on the memory of the railways. "It is a gift for the population and a revisit to the history of Sorocaba and region," says Secultur head, Werinton Kermes.

The maintenance of the locomotive was done with the support of Secultur, it counted on voluntary labor and included hydrostatic test of boiler and of safety valves, repair of leaks in joints and pipes, revision of valves and injectors and cleaning and lubrication. "They are problems of the effect of time, which would also happen with a stationary car," comments Paulo Sérgio Vieira Filho, president of MPF-Sorocabana.

58 was built in 1891 by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, United States, for the Sorocabana Railroad (EFS), and served railroad services until the 1960s. More than 30 years at Quinzinho de Barros Zoo.

Passed on test

On the afternoon of last Friday (4), the third and final test of strength and movement of the locomotive was carried out, attesting that it is able to return to the tracks. "It's like a pressure cooker. It needs to reach a very high temperature to gain strength," says Sérgio, citing that the boiler needs to be turned on about three hours before departure.

With the 2-year-old son in his arms, the musician and student of Tourism Antonio Henrique Pires de Bueno makes sure to wait for the time needed to see Maria-Fumaça from the Paula Souza station and proceed for about 500 meters. If he says that he is a railroad enthusiast, Antonio Henrique buzzes with the whistle of the locomotive, which, according to him, has plenty of force to carry much of the city's history and culture. "Restoration is very important for future generations, not only for the opportunity to be able to walk with the families of the train, but to discover and learn more about the history of Sorocaba and the evolution of means of transportation," he says.

Tourist Train

Secretary Werinton Kermes says that the locomotive in motion, now with adequate maintenance, is the main piece for the implementation of the project of the Tourist Train, which intends to link Sorocaba to Votorantim.

Vice President of MPF-Sorocabana, journalist Eric Mantuan points out that the first talks about the implementation of the tourist train in the city began in 1989, but never advanced due to logistical and bureaucratic obstacles, such as legislation and budget. However, he points out that, finally, the current moment has a free path, since there is a "convergence of interests" between the municipalities of Sorocaba and Votorantim, the federal government and the Votorantim Group, owner of the line and the Paula Souza Station.

With the 58 running again, the next step of the project is called Technical and Economic Feasibility Study (EVTE), which will technically base the feasibility of rides on Saturdays and Sundays, on a seven-kilometer route, between Sorocaba, leaving Paula Station Souza, to the Bairro da Chave in Votorantim. The route will include stops at the future Weaving Museum, the former fabric factory Santa Maria, Vila Hortencia, and the Spanish Park. In a second moment, there is the possibility of the route being expanded to the Votocel neighborhood.

The document was already developed by the entity, free of charge, for municipalities, with the contribution of engineers, historians, mechanics and other volunteers. So that it can finally get off the paper, it needs to be evaluated and approved by the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT), which regulates the activities involving the transportation of passengers. "Now everyone is speaking the same language," says Mantuan, citing that the route was opened after 2012, when ALL Logística completely shut down operations on the railroad to Votorantim.

Expansion of collection

The collection of the future Sorocaba Railway Memory Center, which is being implemented in the city by Sorocabana - Railway Preservation Movement at Paula Souza Station, was expanded last Friday with the receipt of three more locomotives from the former Sorocaba Railroad ( EFS).

The preservation of the equipment is the result of a conciliation between the entity, the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) and the Rumo Malha Paulista S / A concessionaire, which recognized the historical and technological values of the equipment.

One of the machines is the electric 1-C + C-1 2061 from Westinghouse Electric Corporation, built in the United States and delivered to EFS in 1948. Manufactured the same year, the General Electric Cooper-Bessemer 3115 locomotive integrates the first generation of locomotives Low-capacity diesel engines purchased by Sorocabana for maneuvering services on lower-load branches - in order to retire the steam locomotives hitherto intended for these functions.

The LEW DE-II-S 3709 diesel has a curious history: it was manufactured in 1967 in East Germany by the Lokomotivbau Elektrotechnische Werke (LEW - hence the acronym for which they became known in our country), The result of an unprecedented negotiation between Brazil and the socialist countries of Eastern Europe.

In addition to the three new equipment, the MPF-Sorocabana Association has in its collection two passenger cars, one diesel locomotive and one electric.

Aprovada no teste
