Mykola Bazhan was born on October 9, 1904 in the city of Kamianets-Podilskyi of Khmelnytskyi region in the family of a military topographer. He spent his childhood years first in Kamianets-Podilskyi, and later in Uman – two ancient Ukrainian towns with rich history. He studied in Uman Boy’s Gymnasium and later in the Cooperative Institute and the Institute of International Relations in Kyiv. However, he didn’t graduate from any of them. The first one he didn’t graduate because he took dislike to commerce, and the second one – due to its closure.

His first verse “Let the treacherous sea ruffle” he wrote when he was fifteen. His first book of poetry called “Contrasts of the mood” with the dedication “To my mother” is dated 1920-1921. These poetries reflect not only memories about distant thunder of cannons, but also his boyish feelings excited by first love and first bitter disillusions.

Mykhayl Semenko, a leader of the Ukrainian futurists, was the person who led Mykola Bazhan into the life of literature. But expressionistic dramatic performances of Les Kurbas in “Berezil” (Ukrainian studio theatre in Kharkiv, founded in 1922) and later acquaintance with Oleksandr Dovzhenko, whom M. Bazhan met at All-Ukrainian photo and film administrative body, might have had more influence on the boy. At the turn of 20’s-30’s, Mykola Bazhan experienced his creative ardour. One after another, several books of his poems – “17th patrol” (1926), “Carved shadow” (1927), “Buildings” (1929) were published. These works are notable for their passionate pathetics, rich lexicon, striving for comprehending Ukrainian past in the context of world history. Severely criticized for digressing from the revolutionary themes, Mykola Bazhan in his poem called “Hoffman night” (1929) uncovers the tragedy of debility of an artist in the hostile environment.

During this period of his life M. Bazhan put lots of his vigour and time into the youngest of Ukrainian arts – cinematography (in 20’s-30’s he was an author of over 10 scripts for feature and documentary films, became an editor of the magazine “Cinema”).

In 1929-1930, Bazhan creates his epochal creations “Getto in Uman” and “Blind men” (only two parts of this work are extant). After publication of the first part, where the poet prophesied the future renaissance of Ukraine, further its publishing was prohibited and the author was labeled by communist critics as a “nationalist”.

In the early 30’s the art of literary translation replaced his interest in cinematography. GeorgianSovietRepublic entered into his life for a long time. There he found a lot of friends; the Georgian theme is noticeable in many of his works. Georgia awarded him with the Shota Rustaveli State Prize and conferred a title of “Honoured Art Worker of Georgian SSR” for amazing translations of “The Knight in the Panther’s Skin” and D. Guramshvili’s “Davitiani”. In 1939, thanks to the translation of Shota Rustaveli’s famous poem M. Bazhan receives the Order of Lenin, instead of an arrest warrant…

Starting from the first days of the war, in 1941, M. Bazhan became an editor of the frontline newspaper “For Soviet Ukraine!” distributed in the territories occupied by fascists. At that time M. Bazhan published a historical poem “Danylo Galytskyi”, series of verses “Stalingrad notebook”, “Kyiv etudes” and others.

In 1943-1949 M. Bazhan held a post of Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Ukrainian SSR; the Chairman of the Board of Union of Writers of Ukraine (1953-1959). As an official person he frequently travelled abroad, appeared at the United Nations General Assembly in London and New York; took part in numerous conferences and jubilee celebrations.

The results of these travels were series of verses “English impressions” and “Italian meetings”. Italy took special place in poet’s life and work. He held a post of Vice-president of the European Community of Writers for almost a decade (1960-1968). M. Bazhan paid special attention to the wide popularization of Ukrainian language and culture in European countries.

From 1957 and till the end of his days M. Bazhan was the Editor-in-Chief of the Chief Editorial Board of the “Ukrainian Soviet Encyclopedia”. By his initiative and under his supervision Ukrainian Soviet Encyclopedia was published twice, also he supported publishing of “History of Ukrainian Art” and Taras Shevchenko Dictionary. He also started work on Ukrainian Literature Encyclopedia. Altogether, by the end of M. Bazhan’s life over a hundred volumes of encyclopedic, lexical and other scientific literature were published. As the chief editor of the Ukrainian Soviet Encyclopedia he was striving for permission to include the articles about repressed Ukrainian art personalities, who had been persecuted for political reasons, such as O. Arkhypenko, I. Padalka, brothers M. and T. Boichuk, Les Kurbas, M. Semenko and others.

M. Bazhan was also author of the poems “Flight through thunderstorm” (1964), “Four tales about hope. Variations on Rainer Maria Rilke theme” (1966), “Night thoughts of the old master” (1976), collections of poetry “Mitskievych in Odesa. Year 1825” (1957), etc. Series of poetry “Night concerts” (1977) is an original verbal interpretation of music of M. Leontovych, D. Shostakovych, F. Schubert, H. Villa-Lobos, Jean Sibelius and songs of French singer Édith Piaf.

In the last years of his life M. Bazhan most of his time worked on the translation of works of the XVIII-XX century poets little-known in Ukraine: German poet Friedrich Hölderlin, Polish poet Cyprian Norwid, Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke etc. Being a masterly translator he acquainted Ukrainian reader with the works of A. Navoi, A. Mickiewicz, Ju. Słowacki, Ja. Iwaszkiewicz, H. Heine, J. Goethe, R. Tagore and many others.

In 1951, for his literary and scientific achievements M. Bazhan was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.

M. Bazhan is the author of memoirs, essays, publicist articles and critical surveys: “People, books, dates. Articles on literature” (1962), “People’s ways” (1969), “Thoughts and recollections” (1982).

In 1970, at the request of Nobel Committee, HarvardUniversity nominated M. Bazhan for Nobel Prize. However, M. Bazhan refused it, knowing the fate of B. Pasternak and his Nobel Prize.

Seu primeiro livro de poesia intitulado "Contrasts of the mood" com a dedicação "To my mother" é datado de 1920-1921.

Marcella Bricchi, designer: "The new luxury is the conscience of sustainability". - Marcella Bricchi, designer: "O novo luxo é a consciência da sustentabilidade".

Coordinator of the interior design department of the Marangoni Institute, Italian came to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to give a workshop on the theme at CasaShopping.

Marcella Bricchi

"I am an interior designer, teacher and coordinator of the Marangoni Institute in Milan, Italy. I'm Italian, from Oltrepò, I graduated from the institute, but I worked for 20 years in the American market as a fashion designer. I believe these two worlds are complementary and speak the same language. "

Tell me something I do not know.

In Italian, "abito" means to dress and "abitar", to inhabit. The two words derive from the same Latin radical, which means to be inside. If "abito" is our second skin, our clothes, "abito" is the third skin. We must intervene in this space with all the important elements in life, with memories, memories, journeys, our whole history. Our houses are our skins, they must be covered in our lives.

How can the designer capture this very personal essence of the customer?

That's a beautiful question. I worry about that a lot. As a designer, I work with two architects, who take care of the technical part. I take care of interviewing the client, understanding their needs, lifestyle and tastes. He must tell his story, and then the interior designer must create a home that recounts this story. In this way, the customer is the protagonist. This is a revolution, it is very innovative.

If customization is important, why is minimalist white still so present?

This year, during Design Week in Milan, white was a very strong theme. However, much more was present in decorative objects. There are now many colors inside. More than colors, there are decorations, such as wallpapers that recreate jungles, woods and gardens, and others that are interactive, in led. White leaves the scene on the walls. Light becomes an important component. They are both poetic and sensory techniques, interactive installations that create emotion in the viewer.

But can you guarantee aesthetics within this mix?

The glamor is given by the excellence of materials, beautiful shapes, fabrics and finishes. The new luxury is the awareness of the sustainability and the identity of the country itself. The product should bring excellence and the most important characteristics of the country, in a mix of originality and creativity, with technology. It is to translate the genius loci (spirit of place) in a "glocal", global and local way. In Brazil, Sérgio J. Matos does this very well. It's like visiting the country's identity, local tradition, folklore.

Sustainability and design go together?

Sustainability is looking to the future. In architecture we have many examples of abandoned spaces that are revisited, reinterpreted. It is a way to respect, reuse, recover, recycle. There are incredible things like that, especially in fashion. Salvatore Ferragamo presented a capsule collection that uses fiber extracted from orange. With this thread, similar to silk, Ferragamo designed a poetic collection, which evokes Sicily. It's a new recycling system and it's a very strong message.

Is this sustainable bias a customer demand?

It's not exactly a request, but they are aware that something has changed. It is up to the designer to sensitize the customer in this direction, to present products that delight and have sustainable content.

Sustentabilidade e design andam juntos?

"Dry Lives" denounces social neglect and human exploitation. - “Vidas Secas” denuncia o descaso social e a exploração humana

In two brief paragraphs - those that open the first chapter, Change -, the Alagoan Graciliano Ramos synthesizes Dry Lives. Describes the scenario and presents the saga of the dog Whale, of the mother Sinhá Vitória, of the father Fabiano and his two children, who, in the course of history, are called "younger" and "older". Without name and surname, they carry the "identity" of the families that still live today the social neglect and the human exploitation in the Country.

The novel tells the story of a family of retreatants from the Brazilian backcountry.

Photomontage on the image of one of several layers of Dry Lives (characters) and Caatinga Landscape, by Glauco Umbelino

In the reddish plain the jujubes enlarged two green spots. The unfortunates had walked all day, were tired and hungry. Ordinarily they had little time to walk, but because they had rested a great deal on the sand of the dry river, the journey had been well over three leagues. They had been looking for a shadow for hours. The foliage of the Juazeiros appeared far away, through the bare branches of the sparse caatinga.

Slowly, Sinhá Vitoria with their youngest son in the room and the sheet chest on his head, Fabiano, somber, swindling, took him by the shoulder, the gourd hanging from a belt attached to his belt, the flintlock in the shoulder. The eldest boy and the whale dog went behind.

The first chapter of Dry Lives, "Whale," which Graciliano Ramos wrote in May 1937 - Collection of the Institute of Brazilian Studies (IEB) of USP

Written in 1938, the narrative that reflects the aridity of the sertão opens a window to the reader. The author's aesthetic predicament gives freedom to anyone who wants to start the story of the end or the middle or the pages they choose. Each of the 13 chapters has its own plot. The aesthetics of the novel proposes no end or beginning. Thus, the writer, among the most important of the second modernist phase, draws the life of the sertanejo in a circle. Or a spiral. Like a living wheel.

To reflect with the reader engaged in the readings for the college entrance examination, the Journal of USP interviews Thiago Mio Salla, doctor of letters and communication sciences and professor of the School of Communications and Arts (USP). "In addition to the demands of the proof, the expectation is that the vestibule be fascinated by the beauty of the text of Graciliano, who, like a meticulous craftsman, carving and putting in sequence the pictures of the life of Fabiano, Sinhá Vitória, The Whale, the boys' dog, "Salla notes. "At the same time, it resonates the voice of all these characters along with their own voice of narrator, through a concise, substantive language. At the same time, I hope that the readers of the book will be sensitized to the strong social message that gives life and relevance to the book. "

"This is not a typical novel about drought, but about dry lives."

Picture 4
Title of the book that the writer changed for Dry Lives - Collection of the Brasiliana Guita and José Mindlin Library of USP

"More than the drought caused by the inclemency of nature, what would oppress Fabiano and his family would be the relations of domination established by the men themselves," Salla explains. "This is not a typical novel about drought, but about dry lives. Lives presented in all their complexity as part of a systematic process of exploitation, humiliation and alienation. In short, from this mixture between the artisan's word and the problematization of such vivid wounds of Brazilian reality, the artist extracts his strength, which enhances him and places him as one of the main artists of our literature. "

Thiago Mio Salla studies the life and work of Graciliano Ramos 15 years ago. A survey conducted at the Institute of Brazilian Studies (IEB) of Universidade de São Paulo, which has the guard of the writer's collection. This work has already resulted in seminars, exhibitions, articles and several books, among them Garranchos - Unpublished Texts by Graciliano Ramos (Record, 2012), Conversas, in partnership with Ieda Lebensztayn (Editora Record, 2014), PhD in Brazilian Literature by USP, And the recent Graciliano Ramos and Political Culture: Editorial Mediation and Construction of Sense (Edusp).

The teacher makes a point of presenting the box with the manuscripts of Dried Lives that is in the IEB and at the disposal of the researchers. "Here is the first chapter he wrote: Whale," he says, pointing to the original text with the author's spelling and penmanship.
Graciliano writes:

"The dog Whale was about to die. He had been emaciated, his hair had fallen on several points, his ribs loomed on a rosy background, where dark spots oozed and bled, covered with flies. "

The book, according to the researcher, began with Whale, written on May 4 and published in The Journal on May 23, 1937. "The author determined that this first chapter was the ninth in the sequence of the novel," he explains.

"The reader may realize that narratives can indeed be read independently."

The researcher recalls that Rubem Braga classified Dry Lives as a "collapsible novel" in relating its fragmentary character. The reader can choose to read chapters independently. However, the order that the writer organized has, according to Salla, his reasons. "The way Gracilian articulates the chapters confers oneness to the whole. I think they lose strength if read separately, especially when one considers the character at once kaleidoscopic and cyclic of the work. That is, the family runs away from the drought at the beginning and end of the book. "

Another manuscript that the researcher highlights is the cover of the book that should be titled The Covered World of Feathers. A document in which one can observe the drawing of the letter of Graciliano Ramos scratching and changing for Dry Lives. "If he gave the book the first title, which prevailed until the eve of its publication, the writer would emphasize more the status of a story than a chapter of each of the divisions of the work," he explains. "This is because, metonymically, he would choose the name of a part to name the whole, a very common procedure in the titling of story books.

In addition, if he opted for The Covered World of Feathers, a section that deals with the preparation of the family to leave the ranch, would make a more restricted reading of the life of the sertanejos, privileging only the ingrained fatalities and fatalism in the northeastern backlands. On the other hand, when choosing Dry Lives, his only title adjectivado, chose a name capable of encompassing all the narratives and give unity to the whole, highlighting the precise and well structured architecture of the whole.

The title chosen, as explained by Graciliano Ramos himself, highlights the "miserable existence of work, struggle, under the glove of implacable nature and human injustice." The researcher points out: "Dry Lives embodies very well what in my opinion is the great legacy of Graciliano: the conjunction between formal rigor, introspection and problematization of different social themes such as misery, exploitation, humiliation , Among other ingredients that make up a very brazen cauldron of conflicts, about to explode. "

“Vidas Secas” denuncia o descaso social e a exploração humana
