In this second, the entrance to the museum will be free, with access allowed from 10am to 10pm. Besides the permanent collection, the exhibitions Miguel Rio Branco can be appreciated: nothing I will take when I die and Tracely Moffatt.

The exhibition Miguel Rio Branco portrays in 61 photographs the area of prostitution that has the same name, in Pelourinho, in Salvador. Also on display is the Toulouse-Lautrec show in red, the largest ever promoted in Brazil in honor of the French Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901).

Under the theme of sexuality, there are 75 works, including paintings and engravings and works given by important museums such as the Musée d'Orsay in Paris; and Tate and Victoria & Albert Museum, London; and private collections.

At 7:00 p.m., the shutters on the second floor windows will be opened, leaving the works on crystal easels at the same time as the Avenida Paulista and Avenida Nove de Julho can be admired. All programming throughout the month can be accessed through the Masp website.

History
Created in 1947 by Brazilian businessman and journalist Assis Chateaubriand with the help of Italian critic and journalist Pietro Maria Bardi, Masp has a large collection of around 8,000 items including sculptures, engravings and oil on canvas, both national and foreign. pieces made from antiquity (4th century BC) until the present period.

There can be seen among other classics of the Italian School of Art as the works of Rafael, Bellini, Andrea Mantegna and Titian; the paintings of Nattier with portraits of the daughters of Luiz XV and those of Renoir, Monet, Manet, Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, as well as works by Van Gogh, Gauguin and Modigliani.

Alongside these are the Brazilian artists Almeida Junior, Candido Portinari, Anita Malfatti, Victor Brecheret and Flávio de Carvalho.

Architectural symbol

During the early years, Masp occupied a much more limited space than the current one, divided into four floors of the 7 de Abril Street building, home to the Associated Press, a press conglomerate founded by Chateaubriand.

Twenty-one years later, the museum gained a new address, in a much larger place with 11 thousand square meters, on Avenida Paulista. At the opening party on October 2, 1968, important figures from the national and international scene, including Queen Elizabeth II, appeared. It was a revolutionary architectural tracing of Lina Bo Bardi, wife of Pietro Maria Bardi.

That same year, the country reached the apex of the rebellion of thinking against the military dictatorship.

In addition to aesthetics, Bo Bardi's work was a representation of boldness. The new building made an impact, resembling a box suspended in the air, supported only by four large pillars and two beams. Rectangular shaped, surrounded by glass, it gathers five floors between the basement and the top floor and has a living-room in front of Avenida Paulista, 74 square meters.

The venue has become a meeting point for large popular events and also hosts events such as fairs, musical performances and the departure of the traditional São Silvestre international race.

The building was listed in 1982 by the State Historical, Archaeological, Artistic and Tourist Heritage Council (Condephaat) and in 2003 by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan).

São Paulo Museum of Art (Masp) will inaugurate a show more or more controversial than "Queermuseu", canceled in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

The more traditional ones that leave the room. If the words 'nudity' and 'sex' make you shiver, then it is best not to step on the sidewalk of the Museum of Art of São Paulo, the Masp, starting October 19, when it opens the exhibition "Stories of Sexuality." The exhibition intends to discuss the theme from a broad notion of stories, whose meanings - multiple and diverse - encompass collective and personal reports, fictional and nonfiction, surpassing forms traditionally fixed by the history of art.

The exhibition "Queermuseu", set up at Santander Cultural in Porto Alegre, ended up being canceled after criticism from religious movements and the Brazilian Free Movement (MBL), which judged - and created a chain of criticism - that the exhibition made apology for pedophilia and zoophilia At Masp, the exhibition will encompass representations on sexuality from different periods, territories and supports, providing a new dialogue and developing an approach that challenges the boundaries and hierarchies between objects, their origins, categories and typologies.

There are more than 200 works and to give life to "Stories of Sexuality" it was necessary to review the collection of Masp and other Brazilian and international collections, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, films, videos and photographs, as well as documents and publications of the arts pre-Columbian, Asian, African, European and Latin American.

There will be three exhibition spaces: the video room, with an unpublished work by Mauricio Dias & Walter Riedweg, the gallery of the first basement, with the core Policies of the Body and Activism - with works by Jo Spence, General Idea, Pedro Lemebel and Mares del Apocalypse -, and the first floor, which will have the largest number of works, distributed in eight thematic nuclei: Naked Bodies, Totemisms, Religiosity, Gender Performativity, Sex Games, Sex Market, Languages and Voyeurism. In this part of the exhibition will be gathered names like Louise Bourgeois, Vania Toledo, Leonilson, Cildo Meirelles and Cícero Dias, just to name a few.

Creating openness and reflection about sexuality and gender was what motivated the Masp curatorial team, led by Adriano Pedrosa, to elaborate the show. Underscoring the importance of the program, Camila Bechelany, assistant curator of the institution, comments: "Sexuality and gender have always crossed art history. We needed to ask these questions for discussion. The nude is considered a classic style and was one of the first that came about. The naked body has always crossed not only the history of art, but of all mankind. "

The first floor, the most controversial address of the show, will start with the Corpos Nus nucleus, which highlights one of the most common objects of study and representation in art history: the naked human body. Female, feminine, masculine, masculine, trans, non-binary, queer, travestis, multiple sizes, beauties and patterns will be exposed. The idea is precisely to provoke reactions of repulsion and abjection, desire and enchantment. There will also be a section dedicated to the representation of the sexual organs and another that intends to highlight the use of language as an equally privileged way of convening art and performativity, with emphasis on semiotics: sign language and symbol communication, with interventions in media of communication and with different ways of expressing gender and sexuality.

In the fourth nucleus, gender issues will be presented as intentional acts, historically and socially constructed, capable of producing and reinforcing meanings. The next moment explores the sexual games and explains stories of sexuality and the existence of collective or intimate practices that cross times, materialities and spaces. The sixth exhibition space will be built from sex markets such as prostitution, pornography, sex shops, saunas and the products and services derived from these practices.

The core Religiosity starts from the idea that religious images are also socially negotiated as objects of sexual courtship: some incite desire and, at the same time, seek to contain and silence any excitement. And finally, artists, curators and the public become voyeurs: they observe acts of other bodies, located both in private and public places in works of Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso and Alair Gomes, among others.
