Opening of the exhibition "Flame and the Negative of the East" - Открытие выставки «Пламень и нега Востока» - Abertura da exposição "Chama e Negativo do Oriente"

October 11 in the Bread House opens a large-scale exhibition, dedicated to the "Turkish style" (Türkri) in Russian art. The exposition presents more than 500 rare exhibits from 25 collections of leading Russian museums, libraries and private collections. A considerable part of the works is demonstrated for the first time.

The main task of the new exhibition project is to reveal the historical originality and artistic features of one of orientalism directions: turquerie. Its most vivid manifestations in Russian culture are associated with the reign of Catherine II and the heyday of Russian Romanticism in the first half of the 19th century. This determined the chronological scope of the project, which will allow the modern viewer to see for the first time how the events of real history led to a passionate fascination with Turkish motifs in Russian culture that took shape in the second half of the 18th century in its own version of Orientalism.

Unlike the purely decorative and entertaining European option, the Russian "oriental taste" in its Turkish version acquires a serious symbolic meaning in connection with the Russian-Turkish wars and the plans of Catherine II for the liberation of Constantinople from the Ottoman Empire. Russia got acquainted with the new culture and art for it not only in the course of military campaigns, but also thanks to artists who are part of diplomatic missions. On the basis of sketches by Ivan Danilov and Grigory Sergeyev during their stay in Turkey, in the embassies of Prince Nikolai Repnin in 1775 and Mikhail Kutuzov in 1793, engravings were created on which the image of a previously unknown land was imprinted. Also at the exhibition you can see unique sheets from the collection of Mikhail Larionov - a series of "Turkish types" from the popular European editions of the end of the XVII - first half of XIX, devoted to travels to the Ottoman Empire.

The exposition is diverse in its composition: painting, graphics, decorative art, designs of architectural buildings, scenery of theater productions and even playing cards. Each of the sections of the exhibition has its own theme. So, the "Painted Constantinople" Hall combines for the first time together the works of Russian artists created under the impression of travels to the capital of the Ottoman Porte and magnificent examples of eastern rarities brought to Russia from Turkey, from the collection of the Moscow Kremlin Museums - a precious panageyu, decorated with diamonds, and the sword of Turkish work from the collection of the "Armory".

Section "Eastern Arcadia. Journey through Tauris "- a view of cities and fortresses, palaces and manors of the Crimea of the Romantic era, created by artists and architects and preserving the eastern flavor of these places (G. Sergeev, H. Geisler, K. Bossoli, J. Quarenghi, N. Chernetsov, G. Mewille, F. Boden, I. Aivazovsky). Visitors to the hall are waited by an unexpected surprise - the installation of the famous St. Petersburg artist Yuri Molodkovets in the form of a projection of black and white photographs taken this year in the same places on the southern coast of the Crimea, which are depicted on the canvases and in the schedule of the first half of the 19th century. The shooting was carried out within the framework of the project.

In the hall "Luxury and Negative of the East" the viewer will plunge into fantasy in the spirit of fairy tales "Thousand and One Nights". For the first time in the context of Russian Orientalism, the story of Pushkin's poem "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai" will be "told". The central exhibit of this section is the canvas of the Wife of Giray by Karl Bryullov from the collection of the All-Russian Pushkin Museum (the famous Moika 12).

In the sections "The Russian Corps on the Bosphorus" and "There is a rapture in battle" - rare examples of various weapons and works of art in the battle genre, reflecting the events of the Russian-Turkish wars of the late XVIII - first quarter of the XIX century.

The idea of how the Turkic style was popular since the end of the 18th century in Russia is given by the sections "Kayf in Turkish" and "Fashion à la turque", where Turkish fabrics and carpets are represented, oriental weapons and ceramics, hookahs and pipes, shawls and portraits ladies in turbans.

The theme of the exhibition "The Flame and the Negative of the East" is directly related to Tsaritsyn. The history of the construction of the palace and park ensemble is connected with the festivities arranged in the summer of 1775 in Moscow on the occasion of the conclusion of the Kyuchuk-Kainarji world with Turkey. Architect Bazhenov, who dealt with the design of this grand holiday on the Khodynka field, the following year received from Catherine II an order for the construction of a residence in Tsaritsyn, its new ownership. As a result, some Bazhenov buildings of architectural ensemble Tsaritsyno resemble sham "Turkish" pavilions Khodynka - they can be seen in the section "Theater of History. Century of Catherine "in the drawings of Matvey Kazakov, a pupil of Bazhenov.

The new exhibition continues a series of successful projects "Tsaritsyno", devoted to the relationship between Russia and the countries of the East - "Panorama of Empires: The Journey of Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich to the East", "The Caucasian Dictionary", "The Imaginary East. China in Russian. XVIII - the beginning of the twentieth century. "

Pela primeira vez no contexto do orientalismo russo, a história do poema de Pushkin "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai" será "contada".

The Caucasian Dictionary", "The Imaginary East". China em russo. XVIII - o início do século XX ".
