The Moon will host in 2019 a museum called MoonArk (or "Moon Ark"). Designed by the American artist Lowry Burgess, more than 200 artists from all over the world will have participated in the design of this small cylindrical object about twenty centimeters wide and about five centimeters wide. It is a work for prosperity.

It could fit between your fingers and yet it contains a wealth of information. After nine years of work involving more than 300 people, the MoonArk was unveiled at the Thrival Innovation & Music Festival on September 28th. It will be exhibited in the Wertz Gallery of the Museum of Natural History of the University of Carnegie in the United States for one year before being sent to the moon in 2019. This small alunira Museum aboard the Astrobiotic Lunar Lander, a space vehicle designed largely at Carnegie Mellon University as part of Google's Lunar X, which will reward the first team to send a robot to the moon to travel at least 500 meters and transmit many videos, images and other data in high definition to the Earth.

This small capsule consists here of four cylindrical boxes five centimeters in diameter and height stacked on top of each other containing hundreds of images, poems, music and others. In short, the essence of human culture. "Each major art is represented in the assembly," says Lowry Burgess to Vice. "The MoonArk will also carry DNA from several life forms such as the Arctic Tern, a collection of plankton, water samples taken from India's most polluted river and oceans, Inuit sides of Greenland and more, "reads.

Despite its small proportions, this mini-museum, a sort of "kaleidoscope of life", cost more than $ 1.4 million when placed on the moon. It has been designed to withstand the lunar environment with temperatures between 125 ° C and -175 ° C. Once placed on the surface, the capsule will be pointed towards Andromeda, the galaxy closest to the Milky Way. It remains to be seen whether the Moon Ark will ever be found or understood.

The director of the National Museum of History of Art (MNHA) in Luxembourg, Michel Polfer, stressed in Lisbon today that flexibility and stability are some of the advantages for museums that opt for models with greater autonomy of management.

He spoke during the debate "MNAA of the XXI century - Models of management, financing and human resources in the museums of Europe", that takes place in that museum until the end of the afternoon, with the participation of directors of congenial museums of Italy, Spain and Luxembourg .

Michel Polfer

"Today our management model is recognized around the world, and central authorities are exploring ways to extend it to other public bodies beyond culture," said Polfer in his speech at the MNAA conference room.

With an annual average of 110,000 visitors, the MNHA of Luxembourg has 108 employees and has status of State Cultural Institute, with financial autonomy, although the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Finance monitor and control the budget and expenses of the museum.

"The financial autonomy is not total, because there is a control, which is formal, but there is no interference in the financial management of the museum," said the official, who has 8.8 million euros budget for this year.

On the advantages of this management model, he pointed to the flexibility of the budget, the possibility of generating and conserving extra revenues, and the greater freedom to negotiate with suppliers.

"The management of the museum has a greater margin of maneuver than in the traditional management of public administration," he said, adding that this MNHA management model "has no disadvantage."

Marta Garcia Maruri, deputy director of the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao, spoke of the option for the patronage model in the financial management of that entity, shared between representatives of the local authority, the Basque government and private employers.

He recalled that previously to this model, the museum, which holds a collection of 14,000 pieces and a library with 300,000 books, "was much admired, but was hardly visited."

In 1998, a restructuring was carried out with a view to a new model of operation, the museum underwent a reorganization phase and works were done to build a modern annex, contiguous to the old building, and the collection began to be presented in a way attract new audiences, as well as broadening communication through new channels.

More dramatic situation was reported by the director of the Musei Reali of Turin, Italy, Enrica Pagella, who also spoke on the ongoing restructuring in the public museums sector, begun in 2014, to create a more modern system and improve the protection of heritage.

"This was the largest and deepest reform of the public museum system since 1939. Until a few years ago, the system was based on a 'superintendenza', and most museums had virtually no direction, no offices, no staff, no budget. There were only the collections and the vigilantes, "he said.

According to Pagella, of the 4,500 museums in Italy, 3,400 are managed by local entities, 420 by the state, and the rest are owned by the church or state-owned enterprises.

But in the last 20 years, many locally managed museums have chosen to create institute or foundation models, he said.

"After the reform started in 2014, it was necessary to create a dialogue with the experts - historians, museologists, architects, and it was not easy, but in the new system, 29 national museums became autonomous," he said.

The director of the Musei Reali in Turin said that in 2015 that organization was about her and 120 vigilantes, who made up the team: "I did not have a cabinet and I was pacing around with my computer and my cell phone to do my job. "

Enrica Pagella pointed out that the situation has progressively improved and, last year, it was possible to introduce the system of payment by ATM card at the box office.

The director of MNAA, António Filipe Pimentel, reiterated the need for the Portuguese museum to follow a more autonomous management model in the near future, to "continue the mission of exhibition programming, research, restoration and educational service".

It was a major problem in its operation, the great reduction of the staff: in 1987 they were 131 members, in the team it leads, and currently "sum up to 65, even having increased the fronts of communication, scientific research, conservation and restoration ".

He denied, however, that he is interested in a "Mnexit": "The future of MNAA is to continue to integrate the network of public museums and to work more with them, but the search for a solution to the imminent collapse is already extremely urgent" , he said.

The meeting on public museum management models takes place two years after the delivery of a study, commissioned by the then directorate of DGPC in 2013, to external consultants, and delivered to the tutelage in 2015, which advocates the creation of a public enterprise model for the MNAA.

Entitled "MNAA2020", it forms the basis of a proposal for a new management model, providing the museum with administrative and financial instruments and a progressively proportional human resources framework, as well as the expansion and requalification of the physical structures of this entity.

Luxembourg’s National Museum of History and Art

The National Museum of History and Art is not only one of Luxembourg’s top cultural attractions, but also a scientific institution with a clearly defined legal mandate. In addition to holding several special exhibitions each year, the National Museum of History and Art makes Luxembourg’s national collections in archaeology, national history, fine arts and applied arts available to the general public. A “prologue” offers visitors a first insight into the history of the country and the background of the museum’s public collections. The museum’s archaeological collections illustrate the history of Luxembourg from the early Stone Age to the early Middle Ages. Among the highlights are a spectacular series of late Celtic aristocratic graves as well as the Roman mosaic of Vichten with its depiction of the nine Greek muses. The numismatic collection includes coins from several periods inviting visitors on a journey into Luxembourg’s economic and monetary history.

Special highlights: Bouts, Rosso and Isabey
The collection of Old Masters – unique for the greater Luxembourg region – begins with some important Italian paintings of the 13th to the 15th century (including Giacomo del Pisano and Don Silvestro dei Gherarducci). In their new colour-coordinated décor, our redesigned exhibition rooms present a number of works never shown before. These treasures in clude a magnificent diptych by Albrecht Bouts (1451/55–1549), the famous “Bacchus, Venus and Cupid” by Rosso Fiorentino (1494–1541) and the impressive “Procession with the Holy Sacrament” by Louis Gabriel Eugène Isabey (1803–1886). The collection of modern and contemporary art (including Cézanne, Magritte, Picasso, Alechinsky, Jorn, Knoebel, Zao Wou-Ki) is now being shown in newly renovated premises. It includes Neo-Impressionist paintings (e.g. Guillaumin, Cross, Rysselberghe) as well as works of the Ecole de Paris after 1945 (Estève, Le Moal, Manessier, Bissière, Poliakoff, Lapicque etc.) and paintings by representatives of the Nouvelle Figuration (Adami, Aillaud, Arroyo).

Part of the new permanent exhibition is dedicated to the most representative works of Luxembourg art from the 19th century to this day.

Edward Steichen “reloaded”
The Department of Decorative and Popular Arts is housed in three old townhouses in rue Wiltheim used by the MNHA. Here, the new permanent exhibition “From Mansfeld to Design (1500–2014)” explores Luxembourg’s home décor and applied arts through the centuries. A new permanent exhibition of works by world-famous photographer Edward Steichen also awaits visitors at this location.

One institution, two museums
On 13th July 2012, the Musée Dräi Eechelen – Fortress, History, Identities opened its doors under the direction of the National Museum of History and Art.

The central theme of the permanent exhibition on the ground floor of the Museum is the history of the fortress of Luxembourg from its early days in the 15th century to its demolition in 1867 and its consequences for the city and the country. The narrative is chronological, starting in the late Middle Ages with the capture of Luxembourg city by the Burgundians in 1443. Symbolically, the tour winds up with the construction of the Adolphe Bridge in 1903, for which some remnants of the fortress had to be demolished. Important events of different periods are illustrated in detail in the casemates of the fort, for instance the siege by Vauban in 1684 or the last partitioning of Luxembourg in 1839.

The permanent exhibition shows over 600 original objects and documents largely unknown to the public so far. The museum building in the former keep of Fort Thüngen, is itself an important element of the permanent exhibition. With its underground galleries and mines, it is to a large extent still preserved in the original condition of its final expansion phase of 1836/37.

A special room presents a selection of historic photographs showing the structural condition of the fortress shortly before and during the demolition.

A multimedia room offers access to a database and to audio-visual documentation that will allow the visitor to delve deeper into the central themes of the permanent exhibition.

Destaques especiais: Bouts, Rosso e Isabey

Aqui, a nova exposição permanente "From Mansfeld to Design (1500-2014)" explora a decoração do lar no Luxemburgo e as artes aplicadas ao longo dos séculos.
