The British Museum in London is currently hosting an exhibition of works titled “Living With Gods: Peoples, Places and Worlds Beyond.” The show runs through April 2018.
The exhibition explores the practice and expression of religious beliefs connected with the lives of countless individuals and communities throughout the world. It also looks at the benefits and risks of these behaviors when it comes to co-existence and conflict in societies, for example, 17th–18th-century Japan, China, and the Soviet Union, as well as modern Europe. Belief being the key aspect of human behavior, the show not only takes note of the mystical and sociological aspects of this but also the neurological and psychological triggers that come with it. It examines behaviors related to everything from modern urban ideas of wellness and mindfulness to pilgrimage and prayer. The installation includes pieces from the end of the last Ice Age that depict beings that do not exist in nature, to objects of everyday practices from all periods such as an 18th-century replica of a Hindu ceremonial chariot that is used to be pulled from a temple to reveal deities during festivals, a Chinese badge that celebrates ‘Mao’s mangoes,’ and posters related to Soviet scientific atheism.
The show is a part of the fourth collaborative project between the British Museum, the BBC, and Penguin Books. The museum has taken a fresh and innovative approach to the design of the exhibition. It incorporates sounds, music, and silence that are generally associated with religious practice coupled with moments of surprise, achieved through atmospheric lighting effects.
