Filmmaker Peter Jackson, who is responsible for box office success "The Lord of the Rings", is preparing a documentary on World War I, to launch this year to mark the centenary of the first global conflict. The documentary work of the New Zealand director will feature exclusive archival footage from the Imperial War Museum - the invitation from the British museum dedicated to war came two years ago - as well as audios from the BBC archive.
"I've always been fascinated by World War I because of my own family history and the centennial is a unique opportunity to personally contribute," the filmmaker said in a statement. "I wanted to find a way to breathe new life into the stories of ordinary people who have lived through these extraordinary times," he said, committing himself to the project that aims to give a new look at the War and those who have caught it.
According to those responsible for the project, Jackson's team had access to 600 hours of audio recordings and chose to give voice to the fighters interviewed between the 1960s and 1990s. As such, the director will capture the more humane side of World War I , with the survivors telling their own story, and letting go of the war.
Through a variety of cinematic techniques, Peter Jackson will color, restore and modernize the images of the conflict, in a time-consuming process that will give new life to vintage images captured in black and white and with low resolution against current standards. Then there will be room to give body to the restored images through three-dimensional scanning.
The film, scheduled for the BFI London Film Festival in October 2018, will also feature a 3D film version, which joins the two-dimensional BBC One broadcast and later distributed to British schools. To the documentary of Peter Jackson, the British public channel will join a making of own production, that will show the development of the project.
The documentary work is part of the 14-18 Now program for the centennial of the First World War and features 42 events scheduled for this year - and is produced by WingNut Films by Peter Jackson, who has Tessa Ross as executive producer.
