"Fun House," an interactive exhibit inaugurated this week in Washington, fills the Great Hall of the US National Building Museum with a new proposal that seeks to reinterpret the traditional residence and was designed by the New York collective Snarkitecture.

There is much sarcasm in the proposal of this collaborative group, which intends to explore the boundaries between art and architecture, seeking an intersection between the two.

The visitor enters a totally white structure, filled with interactive pieces, through what looks like the entrance to a primitive cave, carved from a piece of expanded polystyrene (EPS).

A carved skylight appears after climbing through one of the openings. Underfoot, foam balls are crushed.

"We try to make the architecture accessible and attractive. Part of this is to integrate this concept of joke, "explained Alex Mustonen, who founded Snarkitecture with Daniel Arsham. Ben Porto joined them in 2014.

"We like people to experience architecture and the environment as children do. Ideally, lower your guard to get closer to something in a new way, "Mustonen completed.

Fun House includes a series of interactive rooms that allow visitors to experience the 10-year history of Snarkitecture.

There are forced perspectives, optical illusion, depths that seem to increase or decrease, shelves that emerge from the walls and inclined chairs that become functional.

"People can take home the idea that more normal and simple things can be seen in different ways. This is a sign of creative freedom, and freedom is the seed of the future, "commented curator Maria Cristina Didero, who lives in Milan.

- 'Tangible and memorable' -

The work, done mainly with monochromatic tones, is like a flat board, where you are open to everything, "said the curator.

The main structure looks like a typical American house, with white fence at the entrance, unless it was built with EPS.

The lining, the gutters, and the ceiling eventually dissolve into an irregular pattern, as if a large, hungry animal had bitten them to reveal the miter and the beams below.

"It's a balance between precision and laxity," Mustonen explained.

One of the highlights of "Fun House", shown in print until September 3, is a kidney shaped pool.

After dipping into 175,000 translucent balls, the visitor can rest on beach chairs under umbrellas, on a white surface that imitates sand. It's a new version of "The Beach," Snarkitecture's popular 2015 install.

While Fun House must be a success on Instagram, Mustonen encourages audiences to take their eyes off the phone and "enjoy the moment, to have a more physical, tangible and memorable experience."

Casa divertida provoca a imaginação no US National Building Museum de Washington.

“Fun House”

In the temporary room of the museum Soulages de Rodez, unheard of: thirty-nine works by major Japanese artists, worthy representatives of Gutai art.

2

Loaned by Japanese or European museums, or taken from the walls of private collectors, they testify to the flamboyance of an abstract art that made the heyday of the post-war period.

3

In Japanese, gu means the instrument; tai, the body; gutai is the body that invests creation. A free body, unhindered, without shackles, which allows all fantasies as long as they strike the eye as well as the mind.

4

39 works presented in the temporary exhibition hall

The works are often ephemeral, as evidenced by the photos presented in the first part of the exhibition. Others made of acrylic, oil, canvas, glue, have gone through the years.

5

Invited to the Soulages museum, the artist Matsutani Takesada, 81 years old. Painter, engraver, performer, he came to the inauguration of the exhibition. Some of his works appear in the exhibition.

The exhibition is visible until November 4th.

Pierre Soulages should come to visit it this summer. It was he who wanted to bring Japan to Rodez.

The Gutai movement was born in 1955 under the impetus of the artist Yoshihara who published the first manifesto. For 18 years, between 1955 and 1972, this Japanese art movement brings together very young artists who multiply what will be called later performances: use of fire to mark a surface, paintings pierced with arrows, foot or body painting ... The collective experiments, innovates, influences. It is the French Michel Tapié de Céleyran, said Michel Tapié, who made him discover in France.
