'Who attacks art is attacking their fears', says artist who suffered virtual lynching in 2017

Less than a year ago, the choreographer Wagner Schwartz was targeted by a virtual lynching that would have made a lot of people throw in the towel (perhaps definitely). The image of a child leaning on his foot during a performance of "La bête" at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in São Paulo, took social networks and earned him death threats and pedophilia charges (Wagner did the naked performance ). Alongside other cases, such as the "Queemuseu" exhibition, the episode ignited the red light of the artistic class in relation to censorship. Months later, however, Wagner ventures again before the public - this time in literature.

After six years of work, the choreographer launches his first book, "Never together at the same time" (Editora Nós), at Casa Paratodxs, during the parallel programming of Flip 2018 on Friday. Focused on Adeline, a woman who lives the experience of being a foreigner, the novel is simultaneously narrated in Portuguese and French, thanks to the contribution of the French artist Béatrice Houplain. According to Wagner, who divides between Paris and São Paulo, the decision to embark on literature arose precisely in the face of contact with the French language.

In 2012, I understood that my entry into the language would be done through an authorial project. I started writing a text, as I usually do for my creations. The need to write was increasing, such as the need to be Wagner in another language. Something different happened to this text that I started creating in 2012. He did not want to go to the scene, but to a blank sheet. I obeyed - explains the artist, who says that the book was an opportunity to "talk more closely" with the reader.

The word creates images different from those generated by dance. The word invites the reader to distance himself, to be alone, to look inside, to invent voices and bodies for the characters, to architect the places they go by - he defends.

Although he returned to perform "La bête" in April at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Wagner says he has no plans to perform in Brazil. He understands, however, that at some point this needs to happen.

"La Bête" needs and will happen again in Brazil, but I still do not know when and what will be the best moment of its reappearance - says the choreographer, while criticizing the bellicose attitude of the population in relation to the artistic class.

Whoever attacks the artists does not really know them. Those who attack art, attack life and its complexity. Whoever attacks the artists attacks, in fact, their own fears, prejudices. Who thinks that eliminating art and artists, the world will be saved from violence, is mistaken - says the choreographer, who believes that the current moment can serve, at least, to stimulate reflection.

I believe that violence also reflects. We are reflecting, and this takes time, on how to create an action that can historicize this moment, so that it is not forgotten. Not forgetting is important so that episodes like this do not get regular. Evil has not stalled in its destructive function. It is still present, but there is a force that emanates from the dialogue that is transformative.

In addition to the release of the book, Wagner still participates in discussions at Casa Europa and Flipei, both other events that take place in Flip's parallel programming. For the artist, the intense calendar of events in Paraty is a sign that Brazilian culture is alive, despite the economic crisis and growing conservatism that attacked "La bête".

The economic crisis has always been constrained by independent work. This is notorious, especially in Brazil. At Flip, independent publishers and official programming share the same space. The audience visits both spaces with attention. Brazilian culture thrives, as it has always prospered.

1
Wagner Schwartz - Luiza Barros

经过六年的努力,编舞者在星期五的Flip 2018平行编程期间,在Casa Paratodxs推出了他的第一本书“Never together in the same time”(EditoraNós)。
