The exhibition The 130 years of the Abolition of Slavery and the Discussions in the Senate is open for visitation in the Black Hall of the National Congress until September 25. With documents and information, the exhibition narrates that period of the country's history, highlighting the discussions held by senators of the time.

1
Work of the German painter Johann Moritz Rugenda - picture illustration.

The show reports on how the slave structure of Brazil was organized. Numbers and records are presented, illustrating how the repression of customs and the exploitation of black men, women, and children were exercised by the slave masters.

2
African culture arrived in Brazil with enslaved people brought from Africa during the long period of the transatlantic slave trade. - picture illustration.

The panels expose debates among senators of the time, to show how the issue was addressed. Some pronouncements by parliamentarians are available, evidencing that the discourses on the subject were intense in the period, both by those who supported the continuity of slavery and the abolitionists.

3
Slaves in the Field - picture illustration.

Important popular figures are also represented in the show, such as Francisco José do Nascimento, known as Dragon of the Sea. Nascimento was a prominent figure in the abolitionist movement in Ceará, one of the largest groups fighting for an end to slavery in the country. The province of Ceará was the first to abolish slavery in Brazilian territory.

Visual impairment

The exhibition offers some innovations. Among them, a guided tour for people with visual impairment, with description of the environment and access to booklets, texts and subtitles in Braille. In addition, there are some objects available to the touch.

A replica of the furniture of the Plenary from the Monroe Palace (which hosted the Senate from 1925 to 1960 in Rio de Janeiro) is set up with the exhibition. The pieces bring to the visitor an idea of what the structure of a plenary was like at the time of abolition, seeking an ambiance similar to that of the Palace of the Count of the Arches, former seat of the Senate where the Lei Áurea was signed on May 13, 1888.

4
The Africans made up the great part of the slave population of Brazil - illustration image.

The collective curatorship, the responsibility of the Museum Service of the Senate (Semus), is by Alan Silva, Betânia Guedes and Laís Amorim.

1
Obra do pintor alemão Johann Moritz Rugenda - imagem ilustração.

3
Escravos no Campo - imagem ilustração.

In Greece, an Athens museum recreates a perfume worn in antiquity.

The National Archeology Museum in Athens, Greece, opened an exhibition last May on "The Countless Aspects of Beauty". On this occasion, the scientific team worked to recreate a millennial fragrance, worn by men and women during Antiquity.

For the archaeologists of the Athens museum, it was a dream: to recreate, from ancient documents, a perfume worn in antiquity. The dream has become a reality that can be seen, or rather felt, in an exhibition dedicated to the Beautiful according to the Ancients, the National Museum of Archeology of Athens. A thoughtful exhibition so that "all the senses of visitors are stimulated", entrusts the director of the establishment Maria Lagogianni to AFP. The olfactory discovery and novelty to the key will not fail to mark the spirits.

"Rose of Aphrodite"

The scientific team of the National Archeology Museum of Athens has teamed up with the Korres brand of Greek natural cosmetics to develop this perfume, "Rose d'Aphrodite", which was worn in antiquity. It took eighteen months of work to recreate the fragrance from textual sources gleaned from all libraries in Greece. The components of these perfumes, indeed, had been recorded during Antiquity on terracotta tablets, which listed the commercial actions coming from the Mycenaean palaces. This first archaeological work, however, gave no information on how to obtain the perfume, and on the distillation techniques used by the ancients.

As Lena Korres told AFP, chemist and co-founder of the Korres brand, two ancient sources were mainly studied to achieve a distillation as close as possible to ancestral techniques. The stories of Theophrastus and Dioskurides, father of the botanist and pharmacist of antiquity, were summoned to arrive at the right arrangement of the different ingredients. Additional difficulty, scientists then had to get the plants needed to make the perfume, including Alkanne, which gives it its famous red color. Plants and roots were patiently unearthed all over the Greek territory.

Eighteen months later, the result can be felt at the National Museum of Archeology. A "Rose of Aphrodite" tinged with red, with scents of rose, coriander and sage. For Lena Korres, "as a Greek scientist, it was a magical experience to be able to create the aroma of our ancestors" (AFP). An unparalleled Antique perfume that should be joined by two other fragrances, by the end of the exhibition in the summer of 2019.
