Swiss art market finds a stable level.

Giacomettis - the celebrated Alberto, but also his father and brothers - were the stars of a night of high and intense bids at Christie's annual Swiss art auction in Zurich. With a total of 5,369,500 Swiss francs (about $ 6 million), the auction house has shown a slight recovery, against the downward trend in Swiss art sales in recent years.

1
Some of the works auctioned on Tuesday were shown to an exclusive audience, in a 'preview' promoted by Christie's at a private bank in Berne. "Fleurs et Figures" (1915) by Alice Bailly (left) and "Effeto di Luna" (The Effect of the Moon, 1882) by Giovanni Segantini (right) are among the works the highest bids of the night.
(E.T. Simantob)

The auction attracted interest from customers in 20 countries (+ 50% compared to 2017), with a 48% increase in registered buyers. The number of new entrants has also doubled. Many of the works of art obtained values well above their highest estimates, and there was a slight increase in the number of contemporary works (see the gallery below).

Hans-Peter Keller, a specialist in modern and impressionist art at Christie's in Zurich, told swissinfo.ch that the demand for more contemporary work is imperative, "sooner or later the supply of traditional pieces will decline considerably."

The figures prove that Keller is right: according to artprice.com, since 2000 the share of contemporary art in global sales jumped from 3% to 15%, while 19th-century works and "old masters" fell by 45% in 2000 to 15% in 2017. Modern art - mainly the first half of the 20th century - accounts for half of total world sales, which were $ 1.6 billion in 2017, and postwar art has also increased significantly - from about 5% in 2000 to 20% last year.

Swiss art, however, has had better times in terms of sales volume. When major international auction houses, Christie's and Sotheby's, started their auctions specifically dedicated to Swiss art at the beginning of this century, the numbers were impressive: at their peak in 2007, total sales of the two houses amounted to 85 million Swiss francs.

3
in Swiss francs

The financial crisis is seen as the main cause of the radical fall experienced by this market in 2008-09. Even with some recoveries in 2011 and 2013, sales of Swiss art hardly exceed the range of 20 million Swiss francs, although the demand for more traditional pieces still be strong among Swiss collectors.

4
Félix Valloton (1865-1925), "Nu à plat ventre sur le sable" (Nude lying on his belly on the sand, 1924) was last seen publicly for 20 years at the "Le Temps des Nabis" exhibition held at the Fine Arts of Montreal. The picture reached 396,500 Swiss francs ($ 450,000), almost 50,000 francs more than the highest estimate.

"In addition to so-called 'patriot collectors' in Switzerland, such as politician and entrepreneur Christoph Blocher, most collectors of Swiss art abroad have a more conservative taste, favoring an art that evokes the Swiss landscape and the traditional lifestyle, says Keller. Meanwhile, Asian collectors and mainly emerging Chinese, also prefer to invest in more established artists. For Keller, this is not surprising. "One more or two generations of collectors should be expected for bolder moves in contemporary art."

For Swiss artists, however, an international career is the only way to find appreciation in Switzerland. This has not changed in over a century, although Switzerland is the 7th largest international art market (with 1.1% of the total market, which is not bad considering that almost 85% is divided between the US, China and the UK United), but only the 20th market in contemporary art sales.

There is more to come soon, as Sotheby's will hold its second Swiss art auction of the year in November, possibly shedding more light on the trends for 2019.

3
in Schweizer Franken

(E.T.Simantob)

Until January 27, the Paris museum exhibits the works of the Czech artist.

Few people know his name but everyone knows his style, sensual women in the Belle Epoque and his banner of Art Nouveau. Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), face in escutcheon ending with a hint of beard, tenant, at his golden age, a workshop rue de la Grande-Chaumiere, in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, is the host until in January, the Luxembourg Museum.

Born in Moravia, in the west of the Czech Republic, caught by drawing at an early age, refused to the School of Fine Arts in Prague, discovered by a Viennese count who takes it under wing, this party animal and enjoyer frequent Vienna then land in Paris. There, he met star actress Sarah Bernhardt, for whom he created, in disaster and by hand, a poster for the performances of "Gismonda" at the Renaissance theater. It will be the launching pad of a career as falsely wise as really sexy, by its models, and flamboyant by an immediate art of silhouettes with femininity highlighted.

Mucha is first of all the trait. Then a colored lace. It is the Mademoiselle Age Tendre of the time, ascendant Symbolist. But Mucha, a fine fox who knew very well how to be properly paid, is also a man with two faces: the second is a return, vaguely mystical, and especially impregnated with a symbolism of a socialist realism asserted. Farewell grace, sweet faces, undulating silhouettes of dresses. Place to the allegories christic, leaden, such as the astonishing "France embraces Bohemia". The black and the heavy closing little by little the door to the naughty lightness of the light.

Mucha Trust 2018

Mucha Trust 2018
