System created by Brazilian 'translates' thoughts of a patient in a coma.

It is difficult to translate into words the pain of families who have a loved one in a coma (not counting, of course, the suffering of those in this situation). To try to soften a little the lack of communication between the patient and the people around him, including his doctors, a Brazilian with only 20 years of age has worked hard - and success - in a system that, when connected to the brain of the patient, could "translate" his thoughts while in this disabling condition.

Luiz Fernando da Silva Borges is far from the standard Brazilian scientist, who usually inhabits some great capital of the country and has at his disposal an advanced laboratory or workspace in some university: the youngster created his prototype reader of minds in the room of his house in the city of Aquidauana, in the interior of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Success from an early age

The scientist was precocious in his inventions: he won nothing less than the award for the biomedical engineering category in 2016 and 2017 at a fair organized by Intel and responsible for winning promising projects in the areas of science and technology. In 2016, he created a new method of prosthesis control capable of giving the user the sense of touch. The following year, it was her thoughts translator, named Hermes Braindeck, who took the prize.

Still in 2017, Borges received an investment of $ 150 thousand to apply in his latest creation. The sponsor, Ricardo Nantes, has bet on the invention and thinks that it can have a high return, both financially and in benefits for patients in coma and their families. Nantes is the founder of Portal Education and President of the Empodera startup.

Foreign inspiration

Based on research by British scientist Adrian Owen, who says it is possible to communicate with patients in a coma, the young Brazilian decided to put the idea into practice and created a portable device that could be connected to the brains of the sick and transform the electrical signals into information that we were able to understand.

With a computer that processes all this data, a device in the shape of a full cap of sensors that is placed on the patient's head and a headset, questions are asked to the person in a coma, and the system reads the way your brain reacts , formulating a "response" to the questioning. The platform then translates the patient's brain reaction as "yes" or "no," making it possible for simple communication between the patient and doctors or family members.

Advance communication

Nowadays, there is a rather limited way to understand certain information from patients in coma: magnetic resonance imaging, which is much more complicated, bureaucratic, and expensive than using the portable platform developed by Borges. The application of this technology may even revolutionize how the patient can be treated by physicians, given the speed with which this information is obtained with the patient.

The Hermes Braindeck system has already been tested on 50 volunteers, all in a healthy state, and the accuracy in the responses was 80% when identifying information given as positive or negative. The next step is to take the project to experiments with people in coma who are in Santa Casa de Campo Grande, which can happen even in 2018.

Built around the recently restored historic palace, the Qatar National Museum was designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel. It will be inaugurated on March 28, 2019 under the high patronage of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

"The Qatar National Museum will offer an immersive experience in the history of Qatar. From - 700,000 years to the present day, the collections embody both the richness of its cultural heritage but also its vision and aspirations for tomorrow, "proudly announces Qatar Museums which, since its creation in 2005, has followed the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), the Arab Museum of Modern Art (Mathaf) and the visitor center at the Al Zubarah World Heritage Site.

Covering an area of 40,000 square meters, Jean Nouvel's new building promises to be as spectacular as the Louvre Abu Dhabi inaugurated last year. "Qatar has deep ties to the desert, its flora and fauna, its nomadic populations and its long traditions," recalls Jean Nouvel. To reflect all these dimensions, I needed a symbolic element. This is how I thought of the sand rose, a kind of miniature architecture emerging from the sand and consisting of crystals formed by the evaporation of water under the action of the wind.

The museum I developed from this idea, with its large curved discs, intersections and cantilevers, is an architectural, spatial and sensory entity. The National Museum of Qatar is organized in three sections, composed of eleven galleries, whose museography was also designed by Jean Nouvel, as at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. "The journey begins with the origins, the life in Qatar and the construction of the nation," said museum officials.

The chronological route, which stretches for more than 2.7 kilometers, showcases works and objects dating from the geological era prior to the settlement of the peninsula to the present day. After crossing a succession of volumes, the visit culminates with the discovery of the heart of the Qatari national identity, the restored palace of Sheikh Abdullah.

Stories from the oral tradition, archival images, works of art, music, stories and evocative scents create an immersive sensory experience that allows you to put in your context the great collection of archaeological remains and heritage objects, including the famous Pearl carpet commissioned by the maharajah of Baroda in 1865, adorned with more than 1.5 million pearls of the Persian Gulf (emeralds, diamonds, sapphires), but also manuscripts, documents, photographs, jewelry and costumes.

Among the works specially commissioned for the National Museum of Qatar are a piece by Qatari artist Ali Hassan (entrance hall on the ground floor of the museum), a work by Qatari artist and patron Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani (gallery entrance) and a sculpture by Iraqi artist Ahmed Al Bahrani (outdoor spaces).

Among the works commissioned for the gardens, we can mention the monumental installation of the French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel composed of 114 fountains sculptures distributed in the lagoon whose jets recall the fluid forms of Arabic calligraphy, and the sculpture Gates of the Sea by Syrian artist Simone Fattal evoking the petroglyphs of Al Jassasiya ". We look forward to spring to see if the challenge launched by the Louvre Abu Dhabi will be won by this impressive Rose des Sables.

Jean Nouvel
