The museum
The Lindenau Museum houses one of the most valuable special collections of early Italian panel paintings worldwide. The wood-painted paintings from the 13th to the 16th centuries show the development of Italian painting and establish the international status of the museum. They are the natural scientist, statesman and patron Bernhard August von Lindenau (1779-1854) to thank and accessible to the public since 1848.
Lindenau also brought together antique ceramics, plaster casts and a valuable art library and founded a drawing school. His collections, which he bequeathed to the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg in testamentary, can today be visited in the splendid Neo-Renaissance building, opened in 1876, at the foot of the palace park.

In addition, collections of German, Italian, Dutch and French painting from the 16th to the 19th century, German painting of the 20th and 21st centuries and plastic, mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries, are added. After 1945, mainly graphic arts and painting were collected by artists from Berlin, Chemnitz, Dresden and Leipzig.
A focus in painting and graphics is on the art of the 1920s and the Classical Modern. The Graphic Collection houses one of the most comprehensive collections of illustrated portfolios of Late Expressionism and New Objectivity.
In addition, the museum has the world's largest collection of works by Gerhard Altenbourg (1926-1989).

An art school, the Studio Bildende Kunst, is affiliated to the museum - a facility unique in Germany. The Studio Bildende Kunst is in the tradition of the art and trade school founded by Lindenau. Artists introduce talented and interested children and adolescents to art and instruct them in various artistic techniques. Also courses for adults are offered.

In cooperation with the art school and museum pedagogy, the museum offers a wide range of museum education with theory and practice. Current special exhibitions are also being reacted to, as well as taking part in nationwide projects. In addition to long-term cooperation with schools special holiday workshops.

Special exhibitions will link to the rich collections of linden-tree collections as well as to the newer collections, in particular the graphic collection. Lindenau and Altenbourg are the focal points, references to contemporary art are also repeatedly produced. The Gerhard Altenbourg Prize, which is awarded every two years, also contributes to this.
In return, the Bernhard von Lindenau Scholarship will be awarded to graduates of art academies in central Germany.

Thanks to the combination of Linden noise with the more recent Collections Collections, it is possible to walk through the history of art from Egypt and Assyria through Greek antiquity and the Italian Renaissance to contemporary art.

The Lindenau Museum Altenburg was incorporated into the so-called "Blue Book" in 2001 and has been a member of the Conference of National Cultural Institutes since 2002. It is one of the 23 nationally significant cultural institutions in East Germany
