A traditional costume worn abroad is more than a simple garment; it allows the user to feel closer to their home country. The collection of photos "Foreign Colors" gives a taste of the enormous diversity of nationalities that live in Switzerland, especially in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino.

Foreigners make up about 28% of the canton's population in southern Switzerland. But outside photographer Flavia Leuenberger CeppiLink wanted to go beyond the statistics and document the enormous diversity behind the "foreign" label.

His new series of portraits "Foreign Colors" (Colori stranieri) not only shows the foreign nations most commonly found in Switzerland (Italians, Portuguese, Germans and Serbs), but also targets their lenses in minorities. This includes communities in Nepal, Iraq and Mongolia, which, though various difficulties have settled in Ticino.

New country new life
"Adapting to a new world is not always easy. Some people felt the need to return to their countries for a while; others tried to manage their homesickness through activities such as joining foreign communities in Ticino, cooking their traditional food for others, donating to humanitarian causes, dancing lessons or wearing traditional costumes from their homelands, "she explained.

What they have in common, she added, is the use of the "in our country ..." phase, which seems to be a typical expression of those who follow a new life away from home.

The traditional clothing shown in the photographs may help increase understanding of Ticino's cultural diversity, the photographer said. She took the photos close to their homes and, according to her, this "helps the person looking at the pictures understand the personal and cultural identities that are often seen as distant."

For the people portrayed in the photos, however, dressing the traditional costumes is "an opportunity to feel closer to their lands, which goes beyond the simple gesture of wearing something."

FIGURINOS ESTRANGEIROS. Cores, costumes, culturas.

Neues Land neues Leben
