"Fort Brumadinho", built in the mid-eighteenth century, was not hit by the tragedy. Located about 50 km from the site of the Vale disaster, its ruins are on high site and off the tailings reefs of the ruptured dam.

Brumadinho, the mining town devastated last Friday (25) by the rupture of one of Vale's dams, making dozens of victims and hundreds of disappeared, holds a prominent place in the history of mining in Brazil. The region has several archaeological sites that help tell the story of the "Gold Cycle", as it is called the period of intense economic dynamics that characterized the colonial Brazil of the eighteenth century. Such archaeological sites were not affected by Vale's tragedy.

One of the most important sites of the region is called Fort Brumadinho, also known as Forte de Piedade or Casa de Pedra. It was built by the Portuguese Crown around 1750, a troubled period of activity in the region, with the purpose of protecting the mining business from internal and external threats. The fortification, which is a tourist spot in the municipality, has about 2,000 m2 and is in an area owned by Vale S / A - the company, therefore, developed a Virtual Tour 360º by the main archeological sites of the region.

According to archaeologist Warley Delgado, the Archaeological site Forte de Brumadinho, next to the archaeological site "Casas Velhas", located in the same municipality, "represent a moment of opulence of the gold cycle and all the conflicts that existed at that time, both the as well as economic relations. " Still according to Delgado, the moment in which both were built was very important for the formation of the mining culture and the construction of the state of Minas.

The Brumadinho Fort is about 50 km from the town of Brumadinho, the epicenter of the tragedy (see map). Although the mud has already covered more than 80 km, the old fortification built in the colonial period is in a high place and on the opposite side to where the tailings of the mining company were directed.

Brumadinho Fort: object of academic research
Archaeologist Carlos Magno Guimarães and archaeologist Camila Fernandes de Morais, researchers at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), study the relationship between mining, environmental degradation and archeology. The "Forte do Brumadinho" was the object of study in an academic article published by both in June 2018 in the periodical Memoria Americana. Nele, Guimarães and Morais describe it in detail:

Tourist Potential
Ítalo Sousa de Senna, Carlos Fernando Ferreira Lobo and Úrsula Ruchkys, researchers in Geosciences and Environmental Systems at UFMG, also analyzed the Brumadinho Fort in an academic article published in 2015. According to the three researchers, the "Brumadinho Fort" is the site which received the highest Geotourism Potential (PGT) in the Report on Monitoring the Cultural Heritage of Serra da Calçada, produced in 2008 with the aim of overturning the archaeological and historical sites of the region.

"The Brumadinho Fort, a site of great regional historical importance, received a PGT of 87.90, and already has an intense flow of visits, given the ease of access and the scenic appeal of the place. The construction was the headquarters of a farm dedicated to gold mining, where agriculture and livestock served as a subsidy to gold exploration. With strategic location at the top of a slope, the place is endowed with panoramic view from which it is possible to observe several points of the region ", point Senna, Lobo and Ruchkys.

The registration of the Historic and Landscape Set of Serra da Calçada, where the ruins of the Brumadinho Fort are located, was carried out through the meeting of the Curator Council of the State Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage, Iepha-MG, on July 30, 2008. The registration of the group at the federal level, however, has not yet been approved, according to the IPHAN report of March 2018.

Fort Brumadinho: Gegenstand akademischer Forschung

Brumadinho Fort:
