It is his third "French project" in the area of cultural equipment.

After the projects for the Olivier Debré Contemporary Creation Center in Tours and the Agostinho Museum in Toulouse, the brothers Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus again won a competition to intervene in a cultural institution in France.

This time the Museum of Fine Arts of Reims, like the one of Toulouse installed in a religious building that was born in the Middle Ages and with a past connected to the Augustinian friars - a complex that has undergone enough changes throughout the centuries, according to the evolution of the city.

The announcement was made this Monday by the mayor of the unofficial capital of the wine-growing region of Champagne and symbolically marks the beginning of a process that will end with the reopening of the museum, entirely renovated and with more area and more values than the which it has today, expected to be four or five years from now.

Founded in 1794 and set up at the beginning of the 20th century, in a collection that belonged to the old abbey of Saint-Denis, closed in 1790 and partially demolished, the museum houses a collection which records the evolution of European art in the last 500 years , and of course the French), among his most important works are paintings and sculptures by Millet, Rodin, Renoir, Monet, Corot and Boisecq.

A collection enriched, in large part, thanks to donations from two of the region's leading champagne producers, Henry Vasnier and Alexandrine Pommery.

Here, just as in Toulouse - the ongoing project, selected in December last year - the Portuguese architects dealt with courtyards and a building loaded with memories.

But if, in the Museum of Augustins, the intervention will be resumed to create a new entrance that will complete the cloister, a decisive part of the group, in Reims what was requested is much more ambitious (ten thousand square meters of intervention area).

The specifications that are the basis of the public tender launched by the local authority - disputed in a second and final phase by the Portuguese architects (the proposal is presented by the two brothers, despite being Francisco Aires Mateus the author) and by three other ateliers, two of them (including the renovation of the museum), as well as the creation of new public areas (auditorium, restaurant, gallery of temporary exhibitions, library and pedagogical services) and reserved access (documentation center and workshops).

The project with which they won the competition will be linked, especially, between the three existing yards and a fourth, which will be created. The museum will have two entrances, a garden that is no longer seen as "the back of the set" to become a space that the administrative services share with a cafeteria that invites the visitor to stop - and, more importantly, stops. have a car park attached to it, clearly disrupting your reading, explains the architect. "What our design seeks to do is open a museum that has been completely closed, turned inwards, demanding spaces outside the city," he insists.

Walls that open
When recovering the cloisters of the building, Francisco Aires Mateus gives back to him, in the 21st century, the memory of the original medieval foundation. "In convents and monasteries, the cloisters were places of walking, reflection and connection to the outside. Here the courtyards are more to cross and to create a certain organic in the course, but also connect the visitor to outer space and the museum to the city.

The project, says the architect, seeks to ensure this opening, in part by adding walls to the pre-existing building. It seems a paradox, but it is not: "These walls open to the streets of the city and to the courtyards of the museum, where there is life, animation, people in transit. They function like the ancient convent fences. They clearly state that there is a different space from the outside, which values contemplation, in this case of works of art, and which has another time, other rituals, but which is not a closed place, is a place that communicates and that relates "The walls, with large openings, defy outsiders looking inwards and, along with" the golden staircase "in the center of one of the courtyards, are one of the" visible contemporary gestures "of the project.

"Everything that is around this set has a strong identity, especially the Cathedral of Reims. We did not try to compete, which would be nonsense, we tried to live together and, therefore, we did not want a lighthouse building. The answer had to be different. It was a huge challenge to draw this and a very big risk, since almost everything I add is not visible from the outside. "

Hidden are, for example, the documentation center, the gallery of temporary exhibitions and the auditorium. And it is because the project implies the creation of a floor -1 that will require surveys and, most probably, archaeological work, that there is a "dose of unpredictability" in the work schedule (it should be ready within four or five years).

The realization of projects in France seems to be becoming a routine for the atelier of the Aires Mateus brothers, "the new conquest of Gaul", jokes the author of the "new" Museum of Fine Arts in Reims, an intervention in which Portuguese collaborators: the acoustic engineering firm Inacoustics, the studio F

C Landscaping and design company FBA: "We make a point of exporting national product, national talent."

Aires Mateus
