Zaha Hadid Architects Design Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah Petroleum Studies & Research Center - Arquitetos de Zaha Hadid projetam o Centro de Estudos e Pesquisas de Petróleo do Rei Abdullah da Arábia Saudita

Zaha Hadid Architects have designed Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s new King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center. The desert laboratory is meant to make minimal energy demands in an area that is well-known for its extreme temperatures.

The central research building is highlighted by angular prows that extend across the surface area, while intricate patterns have been applied to the walls and the ceiling — a celebration of Islamic tradition of geometric form. With future expansion in mind, the space was designed with modular construction.

Outside adjacent, the covered area then provides ample circulation to lessen the effects of solar radiation. Lastly, the open space outside the mosque, the musalla, acts as Saudi Arabia first-ever prayer space designed by a woman.

Sekhmet was thought to be powerful warrior goddess who protected against evil

Dozens of statues depicting a lion-headed warrior goddess have been unearthed at the temple of Amenhotep III, where they were arranged thousands of years ago to protect the ruler from evil.

Researchers with a German archaeological mission in Egypt discovered 66 well-preserved statues of Sekhmet near Luxor, the site of the ancient city Thebes.

The statues show the goddess in both the sitting and standing position, holding a sceptre of the papyrus flower and the symbol of life.

Archaeologists with the Colossi of Memnon and Amenhotep III Temple Conservation Project, led by Dr Hourig Sourouzian, discovered the statues during restoration efforts at the funerary temple of Amenhotep III, according to the Ministry of Antiquities’ official Facebook page.

Sekhmet was thought to be a powerful goddess, and the ancient pharaoh requested many statues be made in her image to protect the temple from danger.

Each of the 66 statues is made from diorite stone, a material that was also used to build temples, according to the archaeologists.

The statues have managed to withstand the years even after a devastating earthquake destroyed the temple, and the team says their discovery is of great technical, scientific, and archaeological value.

Researchers made the remarkable discovery while carrying out a mission to find remains of a temple wall between the patio and a hall of columns.

They also found a large statue of Amenhotep III.

Now, the team is working to restore the collection, and they say all will be returned to their original temple locations once finished.

Just last year, Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities revealed the discovery of six statues of the goddess Sekhmet, all carved in black granite.

The Summary, a Portuguese architecture studio, will present the "Gomos Building System" project in Singapore, Red Dot Museum - O Summary, estúdio português de arquitectura, vai expor o projecto “Gomos Building System” em Singapura, Red Dot Museum

The opportunity comes after winning a prize at this year's Red Dot Awards in the "Habitat" category.

As a reward, Summary will be able to exhibit its work at the Red Dot Museum, where it will be open until January next year. This will be the first time the studio will travel to Asia to showcase the projects it develops.

In this case, the "Gomos Building System" consists of a modular system that allows building of reinforced concrete buildings in record time. In a statement, the Summary ensures that the assembly is done in just three days, joining the various modules.

The presence in Asia is especially important as it is "a continent where accelerated population growth reinforces the need for new architectural solutions to build more quickly and effectively," explains Samuel Gonçalves, founder of the architectural studio.
