Exhibition at the Museu Paranaense honors Maé da Cuíca. - Mostra no Museu Paranaense homenageia Maé da Cuíca.

On 17 November, the Museu Paranaense will host the exhibition that presents the colorful and light collection of carnival, samba and composer Mestre Maé da Cuíca, creator of the first samba school in Curitiba. "Maê da Cuíca Master: Carnival, Samba and Soccer", the show remains until March 4, 2018. The group "Os Batuqueiros do Maé", led by Rubens Rosni Cordeiro, Binho, son of Maé, animate the opening with a samba wheel. Admission is free.

The anthropologist and Curitiba carnival researcher, Selma Baptista, comments that samba and soccer have always been part of the life of Maé da Cuíca. "One day he and his friends from batuque and soccer decided to cross the line of the train and to go towards the avenue to parade under the carnival floodlights and, thus, they changed forever the history of our carnival".

Ismael Cordeiro da Silva was born in 1927 in the city of Ponta Grossa. As his grandfather and his father were railroaders, in the 1930s the family came to Curitiba and lived in Vila Tassi, the village of the railroad, now the Botanical Garden. On the spot, samba musicians gathered under the trees, and little by little Ishmael began to participate in the samba wheels, first playing cajeta and soon learned to play the cuíca, an instrument that earned him the nickname of Maé da Cuíca.

When he served in the Army, he started playing football. He was an employee of the Federal Railway Network and professionalized playing as a field midfielder and side by the state's team, Ferroviário.

He was married to Maria Luz Cordeiro, with whom she had three children: Roberto Robson Cordeiro, Rosemary Cordeiro de Miranda and Rubens Rosni Cordeiro - son who followed in his footsteps. In the last years of life his companion was Dona Terezinha.

Maé passed away in the year of 2012 to the 85 years in Curitiba, leaving a historical and special legacy for the carnival curitibano.

A cultura e o amor devem estar juntos.
Vamos compartilhar.

Culture is not what enters the eyes and ears,
but what modifies the way of looking and hearing.

A entrada é gratuita.
