The works selected for the exhibition MVM Collection in Perspective represent the multiplicity of the language of the visual arts, putting together works of one of the greatest Brazilian artists of the nineteenth century, the painter Victor Meirelles, and works by 36 contemporary artists.

The Political Dimension of Victor Meirelles

In this third module of the Victor Project in 4D, reflection on the social, cultural and political function of art, as well as its capacity for representation, seeks to be open to dialogue with the public and the community.

Victor Meirelles was a dedicated student at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and, later, a rigorous teacher, no less dedicated, at the Lyceum of Arts and Crafts. In addition, he excelled by being a skilled painter of landscapes, panoramas and portraits.

But it was with his historical paintings that Victor achieved renown, guided by the commitment of the Brazilian Empire to build a national identity. His works of art tell stories, engender speeches, negotiate aesthetically and politically with the sociocultural relations of the second half of the nineteenth century in Brazil.

The two exhibitions, MVM Collection in Perspective and Victor in 4D - The Political Dimension, are in print until February 9, 2018. The Victor Meirelles Museum is functioning at its provisional headquarters, at Rua Rafael Bandeira, nº 41 - Centro, in Florianópolis. Admission is free.

A entrada é gratuita.

Restoration works advance in the House Museum of Benjamin Constant, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. - Obras de restauro avançam no Museu Casa de Benjamin Constant, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.

Closed for visitation since the beginning of the year for restoration works, the Benjamin Constant House Museum (MCBC) in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), records an advanced stage of the extensive programmed physical intervention, which encompasses its two main historical buildings and part of the green area where the institution is located, in the Carioca neighborhood of Santa Teresa.

Held on several fronts since the beginning of this year, complete restoration of the historic home where Benjamin Constant lived and the administrative headquarters of the museum is expected to be completed in early 2018.

The historic house where Benjamin Constant lived (1836-1891), considered one of the founders of the Brazilian republic, and the so-called Casa de Bernardina, where the administrative headquarters of the museum functions, goes through restoration process.

Held on several fronts, the work provides for the recovery of roofs of the buildings that make up the architectural complex of the old farm, review of frames and floors, and leveling of its central courtyard and geological and archaeological diagnostics on the ground.

Evaluation, cleaning and recovery

In the first quarter of 2017, prepared the construction site, most of its collection was removed from the main house, which was relocated to spaces prepared in the administrative area. From then on, a team of restorative museologists began to explore the materials and colors originally used in façades, windows, doors, floors and other constituent materials throughout the house.

Up to 7 different layers were found on different surfaces and cataloged for study of chemical composition and original shades, or as close as possible, to the period in which Benjamin Constant lived in the old residence, built in the mid-nineteenth century.

administrative headquarters of the MCBC.

After that, the cleaning of marbles and tiles was started, as well as the removal, repair and cleaning of frames. The work - which lasted around 5 months and involved carpenters, carpenters, locksmiths, painters and glaziers - ensured the detailed retrieval of all the doors and windows of the museum.

"Every small bolt, knob, hinge, knocker, cremone, lock and latch was removed from the wood and dismantled, cleaned, polished, lubricated, reassembled and returned to its place of origin. Each piece of wood has been sanded, dished, dismantled or changed, grafted, cut, assembled, polished, painted and reassembled in its place, "explains Maria Alice Miller, administrator of the MCBC who supervises the work.

Also in the first quarter of the intervention, one of the most anticipated and fundamental works for the museum began: the recovery of the roof of the historic house. The process included the removal of tiles, brushing and blasting each of them. During the period, the area was covered with special tarpaulin that guaranteed its preservation against the climatic action.

Diagnosis and new installations

In April, new electrical installations were commissioned for the museum, requiring the removal of wallpapers from the main house. The analysis, treatment, immunization and replacement of pieces that make up the roofing, lining, flooring and other areas of the property were also analyzed, treated, immunized and replaced, as well as the survey of the museum's land for knowledge about its geological composition, including the existence of eventual groundwater .

Prospecting and resettlement

The beginning of the second half of the year was marked by the beginning of the painting of the facades of the museum - for which the white color was preserved, with hydrated lime-based paint - and cleaning of all the luminaires in the house. required the complete dismantling of metal parts, crystal glass, wood, original manufacturer identification and use of special cleaning and whitening techniques.

In July, archaeological prospecting began with the aim of finding traces of ancient lake and also of a tank used for external baths, both maintained by the family to the time of Benjamin Constant. With this aim, archaeological studies were carried out in two points near the historic house with ultrasound.

Painting of facades, resettlement of sidewalks
and restoration of furniture items were some of the interventions
held in the second half of 2017.

Also began a service of withdrawal of the stone pavement of the type "foot-of-moleque", employed since the century. XVIII, existing in area between the main house and the House of Bernardina. Fairly uneven, the floor is being resettled in order to facilitate the circulation and accessibility of all visitors. Along with this service, gutters and floor grates for rainwater, made in concrete, are also being recovered.

Reopening to the public

The full restoration of the MCBC is expected to be completed by early 2018, when the museum will be reopened for public visitation.

The Museu Casa Histórica de Alcântara (MCHA), located in Maranhão, Brazil, and member of the Ibram network, is 13 years old and opened to the public on Wednesday (8).

Considered a cultural reference in the region for its educational, cultural, museological and research activities, the institution lives in the process of physical and museographic reformulation.

Situated in a former colonial house, which was listed by Iphan and exemplary of the period of economic flourishing of the city between the 17th and 19th centuries, the MCHA was established by a federal decree in 1986, but began its activities only on November 8, 2004, after several works of recovery and adaptation of the property, in addition to the training of a staff to act in the conservation of the collection and reception of visitors.

Along with the colonial architecture of the building, where the Guimarães family lived, they portray the domestic history of Monarchic Brazil. The collection includes 958 items among furniture, clothing, accessories, dishes, iconography, ceramics and tiles. Now the building and its collection are a focus of reformulation that will bring changes in the way the MCHA is accessed, presented and inserted in the cultural dynamics of the region.

Restoration

Begun in 2017, the elaboration of an executive project of restoration, structural project and projects of building facilities, visual communication and landscaping will open the way for the execution of the restoration work of the museum. The idea is that the restoration will make the building compatible with the current needs of the MCHA, including technological updating and accessibility, respecting the minimum intervention criteria foreseen in the tipping of the property.

The work will include physical intervention in the interior, façade and roof of the building and in its energy, lighting, telephony, security, hydraulic and sanitary installations, as well as the execution of new fire prevention, signaling, landscaping, lighting and expogation projects . It is also planned to occupy the so-called sobrado number 15, contiguous to the current museum, expanding its physical area.

New project

The museum team takes advantage of the moment when remodeling in its form is prepared to rethink its content: a new Museological Plan is in preparation, proposing new themes, narratives and strategies of dialogue with the public.

The new project will address the archaeological origin and traces of dinosaurs found on the island of Cajual (MA); the historical aspects of indigenous peoples originating in the locality; the arrival of the French and Portuguese settlers; the cultural manifestations of the Feast of the Divine Holy Spirit and the Feast of St. Benedict; slavery and the presence of quilombola communities in the region; the history of the Guimarães Family and the mansion; besides the presence of the Alcântara Launch Center in the Brazilian aerospace context.

"I want to congratulate all those who made and make the museum happen day after day, to the partners and to the technical staff who are involved in making the museum happen," says MCHA director Karina Waleska Scanavino. "It is rewarding to contribute to this part of our culture and our memory. We only have to be proud of the Historic House of Alcântara ".
