Judith Leiber, the Queen of Clutches, is at the Museum of Arts and Design.

The 96-year-old designer has sold her brand for years, whose name remains one of the most relevant in the fashion industry. At the museum he established in the Hamptons, he now wants to assemble an example of each of the 3500 designs he has made over four decades.

Judith Leiber

From April to August this year. some of Judith Leiber's more than 3,500 designs were exhibited at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. The suitcases told the story of the Hungarian-born Hungarian artisan who escaped the Holocaust and built a successful company in the United States, becoming an inescapable name for the fashion industry when it comes to party bags.

The creator - who sold the label in 1993 - is now, at the age of 96, building a museum for her creations in a Renaissance-style building in the Hamptons. To date, there are already 1500 pieces that fill the space - from leather bags and quality fabrics to small party clutches, also known as minaudières. It was here that the creator stood out in the second half of the twentieth century: with little suitcases decorated with Swarovski crystals, with unusual shapes such as penguins, watermelons, eggs, owls and other animals and fruits.

"I simply thought it would be a good idea to try to do something strange that we had never seen before," he tells Harpers Bazaar.

Mamie Eisenhower, the first lady of the United States, was one of her first clients and a figure who helped to catapult her career when she used one of her creations for the inaugural ball of her husband's presidency in 1953. Many other prominent figures, like Barbara Bush, have also become fans of Leiber's work. Even today, the list of celebrities who are customers is endless, from Rihanna to Julia Louis-Dreyfus, to Diane Kruger.

Harold Koda, quoted by the New York Times, as curator of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET), purchased about 8 of the creator's pieces. "What she did was revolutionary. Conceptual focus makes [the bags] fun or surreal. sometimes both. It reminds me of Salvador Dali and his disc phones, "he says.

Many of the suitcases you see today, though labeled, will not have been designed by the creator, who sold the brand in 1993 to a British company for millions of dollars. That was later bought by the Pegasus Apparel Group and belongs to the Authentic Brands Group. Leiber continued for some years to collaborate creatively and designed his last suitcase in 2004. The pieces are for sale, for example, in the Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman warehouses - most of them are minaudières, in a style similar to Judith's own. Prices range from $ 1,600 to $ 6,000.

"She [Judith] drew more than 3,500 bags, so we're not even halfway going," he tells Harpers Bazaar. In 1993, Leiber won the lifetime cichievement award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).

Em 1993, Leiber ganhou o prêmio de lifetime cichievement, do Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).
