Samuel Bak, 84, on Monday inaugurated a museum inspired by his life and the history of Jews in Vilnius. The artist also exhibits 60 of his paintings.

Decades after his first exposure at the age of 9 in the ghetto created by the Nazis in this then Polish city, the painter Samuel Bak inaugurated Monday, November 20 a museum dedicated to the history of Jewish Vilnius. The 84-year-old man was sent to the ghetto with his entire family in 1941, most of whom never returned. Samuel survived hiding in a Catholic convent and then left after the war with his mother in Israel. He currently lives in the United States.

"I have lived in so many different countries. But I am from Vilna, I identify with this city, "Bak told AFP, referring to the Hebrew name of Vilnius. "To be here is in a way a homecoming. It is also an opportunity to express my gratitude to the Christians who helped me survive, "he said before the opening ceremony. The museum will officially be part of the Vilna Gaon Jewish National Museum. It currently includes 60 paintings by Samuel Bak.

"Bak's work weaves together personal history and Jewish history to articulate an iconography of his experience of the Holocaust," says the Pucker Gallery, which represents him, on his website. "Through seven decades of artistic production, Bak has explored and reworked a set of metaphors, a visual grammar, a vocabulary that ultimately privileges questions," adds the American gallery. Lithuanian Minister of Culture Liana Ruokyte-Jonsson hailed Bak's return to Vilnius, proof that "the efforts of annihilation have not finally triumphed".

The current territory of Lithuania hosted before the war an important Jewish community, and Vilnius was nicknamed the "Jerusalem of the North". Some 195,000 Jews living in this area were killed in the Holocaust. Today, only 3,000 Jews live in Lithuania, a country of 2.8 million inhabitants, a member of NATO and the European Union. For the president of the Jewish community Faina Kukliansky, the museum "will become another extraordinary sign of the Jewish heritage in Lithuania and in the world".

A cultura e o amor devem estar juntos.
Vamos compartilhar.

Culture is not what enters the eyes and ears,
but what modifies the way of looking and hearing.

Sarapul museums, Udmurt Republic - по сарапульским музеям, Удмуртской Республики - Museus de Sarapul, República Udmurt

In the early twentieth century, the ancient city of Kama - Sarapul (now part of the Udmurt Republic) was finally formed as an administrative and economic center of the Middle Kama. Sarapul becomes a city with a developed leather and footwear industry, rich trade, wide cultural and spiritual ties.

The Museum of the Sarapul Zemstvo was created by the efforts and efforts of enthusiastic public figures, collectors and collectors, true patriots of their city.

As far back as 1905, the Sarapul Uyezd Zemstvo in cares about out-of-school education of the population drew attention to the absence in Sarapul of an institution that could serve to study local life and local antiquities. Many archaeological rarities, objects of ancient writing, samples of ancient clothing, utensils, coming out of household use, were lost irrevocably.

In view of this, the county government, at the initiative of Chairman Mikhail Semyonovich Tyunin, issued a report to the next district zemstvo assembly in 1905 on the founding of the Zemstvo museum in Sarapul.

The museum was established in 1909 on the initiative of the public, with the support of the Zemstvo Administration. The origins of its creation were MS Tyunin, the chairman of the Zemstvo Administration; the scientist-entomologist LK Krulikovsky; the editor of the newspaper "Prikamskaya zhizn" NE Ye. Onchukov; Freely practicing physician FV Streltsov; artist P. P. Berkutov; secretary of the Zemstvo Board N.S. Musersky, who managed to captivate the idea of creating a museum of citizens.

The initiators of the museum creation were true patriots and enthusiastic local historians, they collected unique items that laid the foundation for many collections of the museum. So, Leonid Konstantinovich Krulikovsky transferred to the museum the most spectacular part of his unique collection of exotic butterflies; known scientist, ethnographer and folklorist Nikolai Evgenevich Onchukov initiated the ethnographic collection of the museum. Fedor Vasilievich Streltsov donated his numismatic collection, which is constantly replenished to this day. A remarkable library, now included in the rare book fund, was donated to the museum by Nikolai Nikolayevich Blinov - a teacher, a local ethnographer, a writer.

Archaeological collection began to form as a result of research conducted by Lev Afrikanovich Berkutov on the task of the museum in the territory of the former Sarapul Uyezd.

At the invitation of LA. Berkutov, in the study of the archaeological collection of the museum was attended by the famous Finnish scientist-archeologist Talgren. In the period beginning in 1910, Berkutov excavated at a number of the Prikam fortifications in Sarapul Uyezd. In the summer of 1913 the Council of the museum decides to draw a map of all the known fortifications and barrows, charging it to LA Berkutov. In the same year, Lev Afrikanovich excavated a mound near the village of Yushkova.

The natural-scientific collection of the museum was formed by the forces of LK Krulikovsky, who made a great contribution to the study of the nature of the region. D. V. Shaberdin, an active member of the Society for the Study of the Prikamsky Krai, who in 1919 became director of the museum, we owe a fairly complete collection of samples of the local fauna - his taxidermic work still constitutes a significant part of the zoological collection.

In addition, the founders began to collect ancient books and publications relating to the local land. Correspondence was conducted with museums and scientific societies about the provision to the museum of charters, catalogs and editions of these societies. All these appeals had successful results: museums and societies sent their publications.

Thus, with the beginning of the Sarapul Zemstvo Museum, collections began to be formed: the archaeological, ethnographic, natural-scientific, artistic collection of a rare book that emerged as a museum library.

In a short outline of the Sarapul Museum's activity for the first year of its existence it was written: "The attraction of the general public to the museum collections will undoubtedly result in a new influx into the museum of valuable objects for him and, therefore, at the present time it can be said , that the existence of the museum in the future can be considered secured. Without prejudging in the future the educational activity of the museum, as an institution in which scientific societies can be formed, lectures on subjects appropriate to its goals, educational excursions for acquaintance with the local land and its antiquity can be arranged, it can already be said that now it is an educational institution that is very useful for the population and especially for young students ... ".

House-Museum of Academician Melnikov N.V.

The first art exhibition took place in Sarapul in 1909 - the year of the opening of the Museum. Its founders have addressed with the letter to Alexander Porfirievichu Svedomsky with the request for a donation of pictures.

Artists, brothers, Alexander and Pavel Svedomsky, who lived permanently in Italy, where they had their workshop in Rome, where all Russian artists visited the Eternal City, were closely connected with Prikamye: a few versts from Sarapul was their family estate Mikhailovsky Plant , where they often visited in the summer.

In December 1909, the local newspaper Prikamskaya Zhizn published an article entitled "The Picture of Svedomsky in Sarapul." It described the painting "The Execution of Ermak", which A. Svedomsky presented to the museum. A huge canvas (400 x 350 cm) was displayed for viewing in the assembly hall of the women's gymnasium.

The remarkable research traditions of the museum were laid at the beginning of the 20th century, when in 1913 a scientific Society for the Study of the Prikamsky Krai was created in Sarapul, which was administered by scientists with a world-wide reputation: Alexander Andreevich Spitsyn - member of the Imperial Archaeological Commission; Dmitry Konstantinovich Zelenin is an outstanding Russian scientist-ethnographer, doctor of sciences, professor. One of the scientific forms of the work was the issue of Izvestiya Sarapulsky Museum. The first issue was published in September 1911 and contained the articles of LK Krulikovsky, G. G. Vereshchagin and V. F. Berdnikov. In the next three issues of Izvestia ... published scientific works on the history of the city of Sarapul and Vyatka province: NN Blinov, LA Berkutov, GG Vereshchagin, Utrobin, LK Krulikovsky.

The museum exchanged printed publications with many institutions. Among them were: the Minusinsk and Perm museums, the library of the museum of the Academy of Sciences, the Russian Geographical Society, the Moscow Society for Nature Testing, the Kazan Society of History and Ethnography, the Ural Society of Naturalists, the East Siberian Department of the Geographical Society and many others. Also, the Council of the Museum made inquiries of the Murmansk biological station and the zoological museum of the Academy of Sciences on various exhibits. In June 1913, collections of echinoderms and mollusks were sent from the zoological museum of the Academy of Sciences in exchange for the skull of a rhinoceros.

Art-exhibition complex "Dacha Bashenina"

Initially, the Museum was located in 2 classrooms of the women's gymnasium, allocated by the Board of Trustees. The city Duma repeatedly brought up the issue of the expansion of the museum, but its solution was prevented by the First World War that began, then the revolution.

Finally, in 1921, the museum was allocated a separate two-story brick building, the construction of which was started in 1914 under the Nicholas School. In this building, built in the style of late modernism, and now is the head museum of Sarapul.

In 1924 - 1926, during the heyday of Soviet study of local lore, the museum was actively completed from the State Museum Fund. Created in 1918 with the active participation of IE Grabar, the fund was intended for the centralization and further distribution of art monuments between museums of different profiles. The museum receives 40 works of famous Russian artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Among them are works by MV Nesterov, The Boy's Head, IK Aivazovsky's Sunset, AP Bogolyubov's View of the French City, FA Bronnikov's Italian Landscape (from the Spoleto series) , S. P. Kuvshinnikova "Wildflowers".

Here in 1939, after the arrest of Kuzekbai Gerd, the Udmurt national museum he created was transferred from Izhevsk, he was returned to the capital of the republic only on April 1, 1946.

In the years of the Great Patriotic War, the museum carried out a special mission - it served as a museum-storehouse of the Leningrad suburban museum palaces. In the autumn of 1941, he officially receives this title. More than 1000 boxes with collections from the artistic and architectural palace and park ensembles of Petrodvorets, Pushkin (Tsarskoye Selo), Lomonosov (Oranienbaum), Pavlovsk, Gatchina arrived in Sarapul in 1941. About 90,000 items, including paintings, carpets and tapestries, porcelain and furniture-true masterpieces of cultural heritage-were preserved during the difficult war years in the walls of the Sarapul Museum. Legazdin Mikhail Alexandrovich is appointed the director of the museum-storehouse.

After the war, the museum acquires the status of Sarapul Local History Museum. Expositions corresponding to that time were built. The staff of the museum was small. In general, excursions, including the city, were conducted by the museum's director - Kondratiev Yakov Konstantinovich.

Fruitful for the museum were the 1980s. The museum goes to a new level: the Sarapul Local History Museum becomes the "Museum of History and Culture of the Middle Kama Region" and returns to its original tasks - studying the region. During this period, the exposition and enlightenment work intensified, and archaeological research was resumed by the staff.

In 1987, the first branch of the museum appeared in the city - the memorial historical and biographical house-museum of Academician NV Melnikov. It reconstructed the petty-bourgeois environment of the family of the shoemaker-homemaker, so typical for Sarapul of the time in which an outstanding scientist grew up and formed, memorial monuments that reveal the scientific activity of the mining scientist are collected.

In 1995, the Art and Exhibition Complex of the museum was opened in the former country mansion of merchant PA Bashenin, an architectural monument of federal significance, a pearl not only of Sarapul, but of Udmurtia in general. The building was built in the Art Nouveau style, presumably by the design of the famous architect Pavel Trubnikov. The house, located in a picturesque park, amazes with the elegance of its appearance - it seems airy and light, although it is made of stone. In the halls of the art and exhibition complex are the works of famous artists; here the interiors of the turn of the XIX - XX centuries are recreated, which immerse the visitor in the atmosphere of the life of the enlightened Russian merchant class. The former owner of the house, the mayor of the city Pavel Andreevich Basingin - was an educated and progressive man, a great patriot who made a great contribution to the development of the city. In the house his invisible presence is constantly felt - and the visible one, however, too: theatrical excursions with characters of the Bashinny couple: Pavel Andreevich and Lyudmila Nikolayevna are very popular.

Now the Museum of History and Culture of the Middle Kama Region is one of the most interesting and significant museums in Udmurtia. Its collection consists of 21 collections, totaling more than two hundred thousand museum items. The museum complex of Sarapul includes three objects: the historical-regional lore (head) museum, the art-exhibition complex "Dacha Bashenina" and the house-museum named after. Academician NV Melnikov.

Today the Sarapul museum complex is a place for cultural leisure and a scientific and educational institution.

Among the rarities of the museum are the ancient Egyptian cult figures of ushabti, the banner of the Napoleonic Guard, one of the first printed early printed books - the educational Gospel of 1595; daguerreotypes of the 1850s, newsreel of Sarapul in 1912.

At present, the scientific staff of the museum continues research into the nature and cultural and historical heritage of Sarapul and the region.

Today, in continuation of the traditions laid down by its founders, the museum seeks to create close creative contacts with the scientific and artistic world of the region. The museum cooperates with the specialists of the Udmurt State University (Izhevsk), the Udmurt Institute of History, Language and Literature of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Izhevsk), Elabuga Pedagogical University (Elabuga), the National Museum of the Udmurt Republic. Kuzebaya Gerda (Izhevsk), the Udmurt Republican Museum of Fine Arts (Izhevsk), the Union of Artists of Udmurtia (Izhevsk) and other institutions, organizations, as well as persons. The museum is the organizer of regional and Russian conferences; takes an active part in the work of regional, Russian and international scientific and practical conferences, seminars and other forums organized and conducted by partners in the field of culture and science.

A coleção arqueológica começou no território do antigo Sarapul Uyezd.

Entre eles estão MV Nesterov, The Boy's Head, IK Aivazovsky's Sunset, AP Bogolyubov's View of the French City, FA Bronnikov's Italian Landscape (da série Spoleto), S. P. Kuvshinnikova "Wildflowers".

Legazdin Mikhail Alexandrovich é nomeado diretor do armazém do museu.
