Russia finally recognizes contemporary art by law. Understand! - Rússia finalmente reconhece por lei a arte contemporânea. Entenda! -

Russia now recognizes contemporary art as art. Now it's law! Until then, works created over the past 50 years were treated as "luxury objects" and were subject to 30% import duty. With the approval of the law, which came into effect on January 29, the Russian art market is already beginning to show signs of a much greater integration with the international art scene.

The Russian riches, owners of extensive collections of private art, are very excited about the novelty. Billionaire Leonid Mikhelson, for example, is transforming an old plant near Moscow into a 20,000-square-foot museum that will cost about $ 300 million. The trend is that the powerful who have been investing in recent years in new Russian artists - such as Micha Most - are increasing their contribution and art, which was suppressed in Soviet times, to gain space in the great museums of the world.

The novelty will directly affect Cosmoscow, Russia's only contemporary art fair, which grows every year. Founded in 2010, the event went on to be annual from 2014, due to increased public interest. Powerful auctions and other museums in the country will be a consequence of these movements ...

The previous legislation, which was prohibitive, was created in the 1990s as a way to prevent the mass export of cultural treasures, as Russia was in a chaotic moment after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The measure ended up making it practically impossible to import works of art because of the extremely high rates, besides not offering export guarantee fund. For years the law had been unsuccessfully discussed on behalf of communist politicians who claimed that the measure would only benefit the rich.

Rússia finalmente reconhece por lei a arte contemporânea. Entenda!
