Museum Project Fritz Müller provides restoration, deque and café with a view to nature.

City Hall has the support of foreign companies to finance the work via the Rouanet /

The architectural project of restoration and expansion of the Fritz Müller Museum, presented on Tuesday, 20, aims to rescue old characteristics of the property where the German naturalist lived, on Itajaí Street in Blumenau. The roof and external appearance of the building will be modified to bring the environment closer to the old photographic records.

In addition to the restoration, Blumenau, Santa Caratina, Brazil, prefecture intends to reorganize the museum's internal space, create an auditorium, a deck overlooking the green and the Itajaí-Açu River, as well as a café. The president of the Municipal Foundation for the Environment (Faema), Alexandre Baumgratz, estimates the cost of the works, which is to be fetched under the Rouanet Law, at R $ 1.5 million.

According to Mayor Napoleon Bernardes, the United Kingdom embassy in Brazil would be willing to assist in raising funds from companies there that have operations in Brazil. This is due to the scientific correspondence that Fritz Müller maintained with the British Charles Darwin in the nineteenth century, a contact that helped to strengthen the theory of evolution of species via natural selection. The Consulate of Germany has also been contacted.

At the beginning of 2018, a land adjacent to the museum was disapproved by the city hall. A second area was enacted for future purchase. There is no definite deadline, but Baumgratz believes in "a quick work".

Attractive

According to the architect Rosália Wal, contracted by the municipality to develop the project, the objective is to value the history and relevance of Fritz Müller to the international scientific community, but without abandoning the playful experience of Blumenauan children who are enchanted with taxidermized animals and the collection of butterflies.

Three spaces were designed: one using technology, one second to focus the story of Fritz Müller and a third to house the collections of animals.

History

There are more doubts than certainty about which portion of the current construction on Itajaí Street already existed at the time Fritz Müller lived there. But it is known that reforms, especially between the years 1970 and 1980, united houses built at different times in a single set.

According to architect Rosália Wal, the project provides for the differentiation of the three spaces, especially the roof and the external appearance. The house on the left would be the oldest one, although it has already undergone reconstruction and it is not known how much it still preserves from the original. This space will again have high right foot.

Both this house and the right, built in the twentieth century to house the caretaker who took care of the museum, will no longer exhibit the features of the half-timbered style. Both do not obey the constructive style, they only simulate the external appearance.

Only the middle house, which was built in the 1930s on what would be the true home of Fritz Müller, will maintain the characteristics of the half-timbered. Rosalia believes that only the structure of sustentation is of the time of the naturalist.

New building

Rosalia also presented a proposal for a new building for the administration of the museum, which would also house the taxidermy, library and a space for researchers. The building would be erected separately, without interfering in the historical area.

The headquarters of Faema itself could be transferred there. There is still no clarity whether the new building will be part of the project to be registered with the Ministry of Culture to obtain resources from the Rouanet Law.

The exhibition features works by French sculptor Auguste Rodin and the pantheon of sculptures that inspired him. He largely drew his inspiration from the works of the 5th-century BC sculptor Pheidias who is known as the artist who conceived the Parthenon sculptures. The exhibition presents the artist’s work in a new light coupled with how he admired the art of antiquity, particularly that of ancient Greece. The comparison between Rodin’s work and that of the Parthenon sculptures sheds light on the full breadth and depth of Rodin’s vision, and provide new insight into the sculptures of an artist that everyone is familiar with.

The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Musée Rodin in Paris and features over 80 works in marble, bronze, and plaster, along with some of Rodin’s sketches that are in dialogue with ancient Greek art. The show gives viewers a 360-degree access to many of the works which are kept at an eye level as it is in a sculptor’s workshop. The curation of “Rodin and the Art of Ancient Greece” has been inspired by Rodin’s home and studio in Meudon outside Paris.

“Rodin and the Art of Ancient Greece” runs from April 26 through July 29, 2018 at the British Museum, Great Russell St, Bloomsbury, London WC1B 3DG, UK.
