An unusual exhibition on wheels. Jorge Fonseca's work proposes a ludic and ironic approach to the universe of the arts.

Jorge Fonseca's work, "Fiotim: The Museum in Motion", has been circulating for two and a half months at Funarte MG (Minas Gerais, Brazil), where it can be seen from Friday (23) in 2016, by several mining cities that border the São Francisco River.

"These are places where there are no museums or artistic events of this nature. And the people welcomed me with a lot of affection, "says the artist from Minas Gerais, who proposes a kind of itinerant exhibition with this project created in 2014.

in 2016, by several mining cities that border the São Francisco River.

It all started during a visit to Brumadinho, where he met his cousin and in a conversation, he compared the presence of thousands of people in the Inhotim Institute to a kind of pilgrimage. This parallel, according to Fonseca, was in his mind and was what inspired him to conceive the "Fiotim" - designed to gather a miniature version of the artistic content exposed in Inhotim.

"I thought of those people who accompany the pilgrims and sell pictures on the way. My first idea, then, was to make an Inhotim replica booth and sell it at the door, as an artistic action. But then I decided to turn that into something else; I bought a trailer, I started to decorate it and take this repertoire of replicas with me, "says the artist.

It was at that moment that the character Jorge K appeared, incarnated by Fonseca, and described as a "camelô and arteiro-viajero". "He ironises and wants to play with all that represents the art system, the world of museums and galleries. He kinda subverts some prevailing models and presents the art in a different way. Why does the relationship always have to be very serious? Instead, it brings an ironic and playful attitude, "Fonseca adds.

Service. "Fiotim: The Museum in Motion"; from 23/3, at 7:30 p.m., until 6/5; from 4 a.m. to Sun., from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Funarte MG (Rua Januária, 68, downtown). Free entrance.

Entrada gratuita.

Museums and digital technologies: challenges of a necessary relationship. In an article, museologist Juliana Monteiro talks about the challenges of implementing technology in museums.

Recently, a major circulation newspaper in São Paulo published a report2 on the use of digital technology by museums and cultural centers in the city to attract and entertain the public. The reporting team visited sixteen of these institutions, allowing them to assess, from the visitor's point of view, the available digital resources.

From the data collected during the visits, it was possible to understand that, in certain cases, the institutions have from long expositions based on the use of digital technology to facilitate the understanding of contents, to applications and audio guides available to make the visitation experience more interesting, or even feasible for foreigners or blind people. In addition to highlighting the resources cited, the report draws attention to the presence (or not) of museums and cultural centers in projects aimed at making available images of their collections on the web, facilitating remote access to cultural assets such as the Google Art Project.

Despite these good examples, it is possible to say that the general scenario is still quite diverse. Almost a virgin territory, considering the numerous possibilities that information and communication technologies can offer and which have not yet been properly explored by museums and cultural centers. And at this point we can dwell on why such a scenario.

One of the interviewees said during the report that there is a lack of investment. The same data is brought by a survey3 carried out in 2016 by the Internet Governance Committee in Brazil (CGI.Br) and by the Information and Coordination Center of Ponto BR (NIC.Br) and published in 2017 on the use of information technologies and museums, archives, libraries, cinemas and theaters. In addition to the lack of investment, the institutions also indicated a lack of qualified staff. We can add here a third, more subtle factor, which may be a direct development of the other two: the lack of greater knowledge of what it means to navigate the digital waters in favor of access to cultural goods and more dialogue with different audiences.

Let us start, then, by the number 1 factor: the lack of investment. We can understand that museums and cultural centers even have serious difficulties in raising funds and investing them in projects focused on the digital environment. So if institutions need to choose between repairing a leak in the guest bathroom or even paying their employees' salaries with the limited resources they receive, they are likely to do exactly one of two things and not allocate money to create a site, for example.

Now, let's go to factor number 2: the absence of qualified staff. We can understand the absence of two forms. The first has to do with the training of many of our professionals who work in collecting institutions, such as museums, archives and libraries. If we analyze the curricular matrices of undergraduate courses - for example, Museology - we will realize that many of them do not have subjects dedicated to discuss in a concrete way the challenges of the digital universe for the management and access to the collections.

From this we can say that many of the professionals who work in cultural memory institutions are prepared to deal with the physical preservation and control of collections. Such preparation remains very important, although it lacks in terms of the treatment and dissemination of collections using other digital methods or tools.

Lack of knowledge, our third factor, deserves to be introduced here. The misunderstanding of basic tools, the purposes of the platforms and their way of working may lead many of the professionals to put the digital universe as something restricted to specialists in the field of information technology or information technology. However, a systems analyst or programmer will need to work closely with the technicians who deal with cultural assets to understand what the demand is. Cultural professionals, in turn, will need to adapt and learn to dialogue with these professionals.

In this sense, it is worth mentioning that the digital universe is hybrid on many levels and that contemporary professionals need to become accustomed to this reality - even if their initial training did not provide him with all the subsidies to work with. And if possible, they should seek to become hybrids as well, if there is interest or need.

So it would not be irrelevant to say that if such institutions want to impact audiences other than those who are already loyal to them, they need to think outside the box and beyond the financial and staffing difficulties that will always exist - targeting creative and low-cost solutions . After all, the digital has come to stay and it is up to us to understand what may be appropriate to make our museums and cultural institutions of memory more interesting and present in the day to day of people.
