Liaoning Provincial Museum. Monumental Qianlong Period Baizitu Hundred Boys Embroidered Tapestry. - Museu Provincial de Liaoning. Período de Qianlong monumental Baizitu cem meninos bordados tapeçaria.

A Qianlong period (1711-1799) Imperial quality baizitu (百子圖) Hundred Boys embroidered tapestry. This monumental work is finely embroidered with the classic Chinese theme “Hundred Boys” with one hundred and three richly-dressed boys in a traditional garden landscape. The theme typifies not only the desire for many sons to continue one’s lineage, but specifically for noble and distinguished sons (貴子 guizi) who will excel at their civil service examination. The theme itself originates from a story of King Wen of Zhou (周文王, 1152-1056 BCE) who, according to legend, was blessed with ninety-nine sons, but adopted another boy to have one hundred. (Bartholomew, p. 65)

While the theme of Hundred Boys is often suggested on works, this wonderfully detailed tapestry is actually complete, with over 100 figures rendered. The tapestry is laden with symbolism appropriate for a wedding or nuptial chambers. One of the highlights of the work is a young boy riding a qilin, a mythical chimeric beast with scales, dragon-like features, and hooves (see image 26, positioned to the lower right of the central pavilion). This recalls the Chinese auspicious phrase “may the qilin bring you a son” (麒麟送子 qilin songzi), as qilin, much like a stork in Western culture, are believed to bring children to expectant parents. The front rider, wearing a crown and red robes while holding a sheng mouth organ (笙), is dressed as a “first scholar” (zhuangyuan 狀元), the student who achieved the highest score on the imperial examinations. (Bartholomew, p. 65). This further emphasizes the wish for not only sons, but successful ones.

 detail of the part.

Near the top of the work, between the twin hanging frontlets, are three boys crossing a bridge (see images 4, 7, and 13). One holds a box of lingzhi fungus representing immortality and the power to grant wishes, the second holds a bowl of lotus seeds (蓮房 lianfang, 蓮蓬 lianpeng) symbolizing fertility, and the third holds a lotus blossom. This is a rebus meaning “may you continuously give birth to distinguished sons (連生貴子 liansheng guizi), as “lotus” (蓮 lian) are a pun for “continuous” (連 lian) and the musical instrument sheng (笙) is a pun for giving birth (生 sheng). Additionally, lotus blossoms imply a wish for harmony among sons and grandsons (子孫和合 zisun hehe). These visual puns are repeated throughout with several boys holding lotus, sheng, lotus pods, ruyi scepters, and lingzhi fungus as they frolic among dynamic stones, blooming flowers, and elegant pavilions and bridges. (Bartholomew, p. 47, 64) They are also surrounded by flowering Osmanthus fragrans, known as guihua (桂花) in China, which given the phonetic similarity, is a symbol for distinguished sons (貴子 guizi). (Bartholomew, p. 63).

 detail of the part.

The ground, now extremely faded across most of the work, was originally a rich vermilion red, which is visible in some areas, namely underneath the top curtain, the lower hem, and peeking through where some of the embroidery has worn away (see images 4-6, 9, 11, 40-1). A color of celebration, this paired with the connotations of the theme, makes it very likely that this exceptional work was created to commemorate a wedding or to decorate a nuptial chamber. (Wilson 56, 63-4; Yang et al 248; Brown et al cat. 25)

 detail of the part.

Chinese textiles of this size are typically rendered in the woven silk kesi (or k’o-ssu 緙絲) technique and it is exceedingly rare to find an embroidery on this scale. A few similar works include a wedding curtain gifted to the Qianlong Emperor, now at the Liaoning Provincial Museum (Yang et al, p. 248, plate 132; discussed at length below), bed curtains that were displayed in the imperial nuptial bed chamber in the Palace of Earthly Tranquility or Kunning Palace (Beijing 2006, p. 83, plate 65, also discussed further below), and a 19th century work in the Amy S. Clague Collection (Brown cat. Entry 25, plate 140). The work is predominantly worked in satin-stitch and embellished with gold and silver-wrapped silk threads. The work is unusually fine, with extreme delicacy and closeness, implying noble or Imperial quality.

The tapestry offered here is extraoridnarily similar to bed curtains from the nuptial chambers of the Palace of Earthly Tranquility, also known as the Kunning Palace (坤寧宮). The chamber was used by the Emperors Kangxi, Tongzhi, Guangxu and Xuantong of the Qing dynasty prior to the Revolution of 1911. The bed curtains share the same “Hundred Boys” theme with a comparable composition and embroidery style. The Palace bed curtains also have a horizontal upper curtains and hanging frontlets, however, it has two panels, rather than a single panel. (Zhuoyun Yu, p. 83, plate 65)

 detail of the part.

Additionally, this tapestry has noteworthy similarities to an embroidered gauze curtain that was presented by the Suzhou Weaving Mill to the Qianlong Emperor to be used during his wedding ceremony, now held in the Liaoning Provincial Museum. (Yang et al, p. 248, plate 132) The Liaoning work is decorated with dragons and phoenixes paired with “double happiness” characters; appropriate themes for nuptial celebrations. The form of the two tapestries are nearly identical, both having a horizontal upper curtain and twin hanging frontlets. The tapestry on offer here is nearly identical in length and approximately 16 inches wider than the Liaoning work (see measurements below, Liaoning work measures 185.6 cm x 98.8 cm or 73.1” x 38.9”). The embroidery is remarkably similar as well, with similar overall designs and with the fineness and styles of stitches used, again, suggesting the Imperial quality of the tapestry.

(Zhuoyun Yu, p. 83, placa 65)

The first 80 boxes were sold so quickly that Seu Anísio saw potential in the business. He went to Bethlehem every month, and yet he did not take care of the lawsuit. He then decided to buy the factory from one of its suppliers, 36 years ago - the kick for the change of life: "I started to buy semi-finished ceramics and paint. Then I started a work known as aggregation.

Today, considered a master, he is one of the names that keeps alive the heritage of the extinct indigenous nations of the Marajó Island and the banks of the Tapajós River, where he is living. located the municipality of Santarém.

Sebrae Pará has played a key role in promoting the region's handicraft, which since 1998 has been carrying out actions to enhance the cultural identity of these communities and to promote the improvement of the quality of life, thus increasing income generation. The organization was a co - editor of the book Arte da terra - salvage of the material and iconographic culture of Pará, published by the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, which has a large collection of drawings of details of the pieces, reproduced by the artisans of Icoaraci for the production of works current.

"His Anísio is a great connoisseur of the Marajoara, Tapajônica and Maracá cultures," says Renata Trícia, manager of the Trade and Services unit of Sebrae Pará. In addition to imitations of drawings, the master develops more authorial traits. A good example is the line that depicts the rope of the Círio de Nazaré, the largest religious event in Brazil.

Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, in the City of Ankara. - Museu das Civilizações da Anatólia, na Cidade de Ankara. - Ankara'da Anadolu Medeniyetleri Müzesi.

Anatolia, or Anatolian peninsula, also known as Asia Minor, denotes the western protrusion of Asia, which makes up much of the Republic of Turkey.

Located in an ancient Ottoman Bazaar, the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations has an incredible collection on the history of the peoples who have lived in Asia Minor through the ages. It is possible to find artefacts that go back from the Paleolithic, passing through the Neolithic, Assyrian Colonization, Hittite, Phrygian, Lydian and Urartu period.

The first coin of history was coined by the Lydians. There are copies of this period in the Museum.

The Fresco with the oldest landscape in the world found in Çatalhöyük (ancient city of the neolithic period) is in the Museum.

The remains of King Midas and part of his treasure are in the Museum.

Located in a restored 15th century building, it is a museum that visitors of Ankara can not miss being one of the biggest attractions of the city. It has a wonderful archeological collection, documenting the peoples and cultures of Anatolia, from the Stone Age and through of the Classical periods.

The Hittites were an Indo-European people, who in the 2nd millennium BC founded a powerful empire in Anatolia (where we meet), whose fall dates from the 13th-12th century BC.

Hurritas

The Hurrians were non-Semites who, before the beginning of the second millennium BC, migrated from the southern Caucasus region to north-eastern Mesopotamia. they appear for the first time in the pages of the story about 2400 BC in the region of the Zagros Range, east of the Tigris River.

Source

The main problem at the time of studying the Hurrians is the scarcity of direct sources.

It is believed that at its origin they were an Indo-Germanic or Indo-Aryan people from the Western Caucasus. They would have migrated to the west along with the Cassitas and settled in the Mitani, forming in the region a powerful State denominated kingdom of the Mitanni.

In 1887 in the archives of O-Amarna (Egypt) was found a letter of a king of Mitani, Tushratta, written in a language that in the beginning was called mitano. However, the Hittite archives of Hattusa soon came to light, where the language of the Mitani was called Hurrita, whence the people who spoke it took its name.

These Hittite documents have been the main source for the knowledge of Hurrian culture, although documents of other powers (Egypt, Babylonia, Ugarit) and archaeological remains have also proved useful. Particularly interesting are documents written both in Hittite and Hurrian-Urartian languages, as they have helped decipher important parts of the latter language.

The Hurrians first appeared in the written records of Mesopotamia during the last two centuries of the third millennium BC. Until the mid-1920s, very little was known about this ethnicity beyond the Biblical allusion to the Horites. However, it is now believed that they and another group called Subaria were an important component of the Mesopotamian population during the late third and early second millennium BC.

The Hurrian history is rebuilt on the basis of onomastic data. The conception is formed in terms of where the Hurrian names are found, their presence can be identified. The most recent record of such names is found in a dedicatory tablet of Samarra, which dates back to before the dynasty of Ur III (c.2250 BC).

After the Gutiss' victory over the last kings of Acade, the Hurrians appear to have flooded the northern side of Mesopotamia, especially the land east of the Tigris. The excavations at Mari in the mid-Euphrates, about seven miles north of Abou Kemal, undertaken since 1933 by the Louvre Museum, have discovered an extensive number of Hurrian tablets. At this early stage of Hurrian literature, about 2400 to 1800 BCE, belong some of the religious texts found in the ancient capital of Hattushash, Asia Minor.

Two inscriptions are important in this testimony: the inscription of the founding lion of Tisatal of Urkis and the own dedicatory tablet of Arisen, prince of Urkis.

Archaeological sources

The first excavations began in the 1920s and 1930s in Syria and Iraq and were led by the American archaeologist Edward Chiera and the British Max Mallowan.

Nowadays many teams from different nations are working in the area with the help of the Syrian authorities.

Most of the archaeological remains reveal cities with a history that begins in the Neolithic and reaches at least until the Roman period, with the exception of the remains of Urkesh. For the dating of the material found, the so-called "Khabur pottery", typical of Hurrian culture, is often very useful.

Gutiss'in Acarın son kralları üzerindeki zaferinden sonra, Hürriyetler, özellikle Dicle'nin doğusundaki Mezopotamya'nın kuzey tarafını sular altında bırakmış görünüyor. 1933'ten beri Louvre Müzesi tarafından üstlenilen Abou Kemal'in yaklaşık yedi mil kuzeyindeki Fırat'ın ortasında, Mari'de yapılan kazılar çok sayıda Hurriçe tablet keşfetti. Hurre edebiyatının bu erken safhasında, yaklaşık 2400 ila 1800 BCE, eski Küçük Hattuşaş başkentinde bulunan bazı dini metinlere aittir.
Bu ifadede iki yazıt önemlidir: Urkis Tisatal'ın kurucu aslanının ve Urkis prensi Arisen'in kendi müsamahası tabletinin yazıtı.

Arkeolojik kaynaklar
