Leão Coroado has its intangible heritage in a safeguard project. Pernambuco Brazil. Maracatu Group Leão Coroado, founded in 1863, is considered a living patrimony of the State. Pernambuco, Brasil. Grupo do Maracatu Leão Coroado, fundado em 1863, é considerado patrimônio vivo do Estado.

One of the oldest maracatus in Pernambuco is in celebration. 150 years of history, culture and tradition. "Several products make up the project: a book chronicling the history of the association, a CD with 16 traditional tunes, a video documentary and a website that will continue to be fed by the members of maracatu .

The launch takes place at the Post Cultural Center in the Recife neighborhood and will also feature a dialogue table on the importance of the Crowned Lion as guardian of afrodescendant memory and, at the end, tasting of terreiro gastronomy.

"Through three years, with support from the Pernambucano Fund for Culture Incentive (Funculture), materials such as photos, music and audiovisual records of Leão Coroado were researched and systematized in partner entities such as the Pernambuco Commission of Folklore, the Joaquim Nabuco Foundation , the Museum of Abolition, the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Black Men and the members of Maracatu, especially the oldest ones ", says the coordinator of the project and president of the nongovernmental organization International Economic Cooperation (Icei Brazil), Diego Di Niglio.

Along with the collection and cataloging of the images and the making of the book, CD and DVD, the project carried out workshops for the transmission of knowledges (such as dance, percussion, instrument making and costume making and banners) and videotaping. members of Leão Coroado, students of local schools and other residents of Águas Compridas neighborhood, in Olinda, where the headquarters of maracatu is located.

Founded in 1863 and considered living heritage of Pernambuco, the Crowned Lion had never been recorded with such breadth and depth. In 1989, the Municipality of Recife published the book "Leão Coroado", focusing on the former master of the association, Luiz de França, who died in 1997, and in 2013, a year in which the association celebrated its 150th anniversary. printing a catalog. Nothing, however, comparable to the ransom promoted now.

"This type of project is fundamental to valorize and preserve manifestations of popular culture, especially those of African origin, which have orality at their base. On the one hand, it organizes and registers memory, and on the other, it forms the basis for the future "points out Di Niglio, noting that the fact that there is a multiplicity of languages widens the look and favors the appropriation by the community itself.

For the master of the Crowned Lion, Afonso Gomes de Aguiar Filho, it would be important that other associations from Pernambuco could be the target of this kind of rescue and incentive. "The Crowned Lion is proud to be able to tell this story from the earliest times to the present day. We have been trying to follow a legacy, preserving our traditions and showing people what a true maracatu is like at a time when the excess of stylization is causing many to lose the thread of the skein, "he criticizes.

The materials that make up the project will be distributed free of charge during the event, and will later be sold at a cost of R $ 40 (book) or R $ 20 (CD or DVD). The income collected will be reverted to the construction of the headquarters of the Lion Crowned.

At the moment, the props and other materials of the centennial institution are kept in the house of the master Afonso himself. "We already have the terrain, and I hope that now that we have this material as a counterpart, it is possible to realize the dream of having a headquarters where we can rehearse and pass that knowledge forward," he says.

Pernambuco, Brasil.
