The forgotten Papyrus. Collections in the Museum of Art History. Vienna. - Der vergessene Papyrus. Sammlungen im Kunsthistorischen Museum. Wien. - O papiro esquecido. Coleções no Museu de história da arte. Viena.

In the year 2013, the animal mummies of the Egyptian-Oriental collection were moved to a new depot; These included the so-called ibis-Clay cone-oblong clay vessels, which served as coffins for ibis mummies. They were previously subjected to a thorough examination or cleaning, and there was an unexpected discovery: inside one of the clay cone not only the expected Ibis mummy was discovered, but beneath it hides a linen bundle, which has a hitherto Unidentified, still rolled papyrus.

The roll-out of the papyrus, which took place in the spring of 2014, was preceded by extensive pre-work and tests. The fully rolled papyrus is 250 cm long and labeled on both sides. Dates in the text allow a date in the late New Reich (around 1100 BC) and also the name of the scribe is mentioned in the text.

Since the clay cone with the Ibis Mummy, in which the papyrus was found, is about 700 years younger than the papyrus, the question arises as to why and when the papyrus has reached the clay cone. Was this already happening in ancient times? Or only much later, when the clay Cone travelled from Egypt via Trieste to Vienna in the 19th century? The exhibition will look at these and other exciting questions in connection with this unique discovery.

Der vergessene Papyrus. Sammlungen im Kunsthistorischen Museum. Wien.

Geschah dies bereits in antiker Zeit?
