The greatest works to see at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, breaks the record of artifacts exhibited in a museum. It began in 1764, under the leadership of Catherine II of Russia, and opened to the public in 1825. The museum is divided into several hundred rooms.

Catherine II of Russia acquired thousands of paintings during her reign, which constitute the foundation of the Hermitage of St. Petersburg. She had a replica of Raphael's Loggia de Psyche painted. The museum reaches 4,000 works of art from the end of the 18th century. He now exhibits over 60,000 works, selected from more than 3 million pieces preserved. You can see, among others, the Madonna Litta by Leonardo da Vinci, the Portrait of a lady in Cézanne blue, the Girl in Titian's hat or Bé Bé by Gauguin. Many French and Dutch painters are represented as Rembrandt, Rubens or Matisse. The Hermitage also presents 31 works by Picasso.

It covers 23,000 m2 of which 66,000 are reserved for exhibitions. It is one of the largest museums in the world with the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

In addition to the immensity of its collection of paintings, the museum also exhibits collections dedicated to prehistory and antiquity. Visitors can discover unusual objects, such as engraved mammoth tusks or the Dchingis stone, the oldest relic of Mongolian writing. The Hermitage of Saint Petersburg also presents a wide selection of Fabergé eggs and traditional costumes.

Namely: during the Second World War, the Hermitage of St. Petersburg was the subject of numerous attacks by the Germans. Part of the collections were protected in the basement of the museum by people who lived there, and another was transferred.

BNDES Award values better experiences in traditional agricultural systems in Brazil. - Prêmio BNDES valoriza melhores experiências em sistemas agrícolas tradicionais no Brasil.

Recognize and value good practices for the safeguarding and conservation of cultural and intangible assets associated with agrobiodiversity, examples of coexistence with the land, samples of the genuine culture of the countryside in which nature and communities mix and blend in a special way of living. This was the objective of the BNDES 2018 Award, which has just released the list of experiences that have stood out in Traditional Agricultural Systems (SAT) in Brazil. Five of them were considered the best because they revealed the determination and creative ability of producers in the struggle for survival in harmony with the land.

The first one was the Association of Rural Women Workers (AMTR), from Lago do Junco (MA); secondly, there was the Association of Rural Producers of Vereda, by Matias Cardoso (MG); Third, the Association of Remnants of Quilombo de São Pedro, from Eldorado (SP), in the fourth place, the Imbituba Rural Community Association of Imbituba (SC) and in fifth place, the Regional Institute of Small Agro-Farmers IRPAA), from the municipalities of Pilão Arcado, Campo Alegre de Lourdes, Canudos, Casa Nova, Remanso, Curaçá, Sento Sé, Uauá, Sobradinho and Juazeiro. 15 initiatives will be awarded. The BNDES Good Practice Award for Traditional Agricultural Systems is the result of a partnership between the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan / Culture) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

According to the president of the judging commission, Embrapa researcher João Roberto Correia, from the Secretariat of Intelligence and Strategic Relations (Sire), the award is an opportunity to show the diversity of ways of life, rites and cultures of indigenous peoples and traditional communities. "The agricultural systems of these groups need to be valued, because they are linked to the economic dynamics of various regions of the country," he says. "Ancestral knowledge is a heritage that must be recognized and disseminated because it carries the essence of the local traditions that, over generations, adapt to new realities and retain a wealth of knowledge that allows them to face the challenges posed by climate change "He adds.

With the award, what is intended is to kick-start the mapping of traditional agricultural systems throughout the country, giving communities the opportunity to be recognized nationally by IPHAN and internationally by FAO. For the manager of the BNDES Productive Inclusion Department, Fernanda Thomaz da Rocha, the award will be an opportunity to generate subsidies for the implementation in Brazil of FAO's Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) Program. "GIAHS promotes an integrated approach that combines sustainable agriculture and rural development with the safeguarding of social, cultural, economic and environmental goods and services provided by family farmers, indigenous peoples and local communities," she explains.

At the national level, the Brazilian SATS have an instrument of recognition that is of Intangible Assets, granted by Iphan. Currently, the Traditional Agricultural System of Rio Negro is the only one inscribed in the Registry of Knowledge of IPHAN. "A number of criteria and requirements need to be fulfilled for this, but we understand that when rewarding a series of experiences like these we strengthen the importance of recognizing traditional knowledge and knowledge," explains the Department's General Identification and Registration Coordinator of Intangible Heritage of Iphan, Deyvesson Gusmão.

In addition to the dissemination of the results through the BNDES website, an awards and training event will be held, organized by the organizing institutions. To guarantee the participation of the winners, the representatives of the communities will receive an additional gross value of R $ 5 thousand to cover expenses.
Surprise and excitement - When news of the awards arrived, Maria das Dores Lima - Dôra - could not hold back the emotion. The president of the Association of Rural Women Workers of the community of Lago do Junco, in Maranhão, confesses that she did not expect it. "It is the recognition of a struggle of years to ensure the survival of so many families," she says, knowing that the experience of the women of the Middle Mearim had won the BNDES SAT award.
"The defense of babassu represents the defense of our lives." And it is true: from the palm leaf, used to make roofs of houses and crafts, passing through the stem, raw material for the fertilizer and the structure of the buildings, to the bark of the coconut, which turns coal and almond for production of the oil used in the food, such as fuel, lubricant and soap - everything is taken advantage of.
Sometimes with a choked voice, she recalls the difficulty in stopping the felling of entire areas of babassu, gradually replaced by huge pasturegrass plantations. Without giving up and in defense of the guarantee of access to the site for collection, the villagers were able to, as of 1997, approve the Free Babaçu Law, which preserves the right of community use of babassu, in addition to restricting the felling of the plant. Lake Junco was the first municipality to have a law on the subject, which was later reproduced in several other regions of the State, besides Piauí, Tocantins and Pará.

What about the destination of the prize? Yes, of course it already has destination. I realize that there are many plans. "But one of our priorities is to strengthen the community's articulation and invest in empowerment so that more women and young people engage in the preservation of our traditions," she says.

Quilombola resistance - A way of life and relation with the land that has crossed four generations and has guaranteed, not only the preservation of the culture of a community, but the survival of families that do not know any other form of sustenance, besides the preservation of the São Francisco river . This represents the institution awarded the second place in the BNDES SAT Award. The Association of Rural Producers of Vereda, by Matias Cardoso, Minas Gerais, is an example of the resistance of a quilombola community to stay on earth and preserve the teachings of the ancestors, all in harmony with the dynamics of the São Francisco river along the years.

"We work in the agricultural system on the banks of the São Francisco River," says the Association's president, Regina Melo. "It was there that we learned, with the indigenous tradition and the slaves, to live with the earth, even with all the difficulties". According to her, not even the water shortage compromises the determination of the more than 80 people working in the region. "Today, if we do not get wet, nothing is born."
