Asian panel painting sells for seven times estimate


NEW ORLEANS – On Dec. 6-7, New Orleans Auction Galleries realized $1.8 million in a Winter Estates Auction that garnered interest from local, national and international bidders. The two-day sale featured nearly 1,200 lots of fine art, antique to contemporary furniture, decorative arts, silver, modern and estate jewelry, Asian arts, carpets and tapestries, and more.

Susan D. Krohn, CEO of New Orleans Auction Galleries, commented, “This sale marks 663an important milestone for us at New Orleans Auction as we prepare to move to a spectacular new location in 2015. The auction concludes a tremendously successful year on a high note. We look forward to more auctions and expanded offerings in 2015.”

Saturday began with significant interest in a Flemish School portrait of a young boy. Phone, Internet and in-room bidders participated in lively bidding before the painting sold to $39,360 against a $5,000 to $8,000 estimate. Other highlights from Saturday included a large Italian Vatican workshop Micro-Mosaic of the “Madonna and Child” that reached $23,370 and an impressive French gilt-bronze three-piece clock set that sold for $10,147. The day ended with an 18th/19th century Chinese four-panel landscape painting estimated at $1,000 to $1,500 that soared to $78,720, becoming the top lot of the sale.

Sunday also started strong with a platinum, amethyst and diamond necklace selling for $24,600. Southern Regional fine art followed with a large work by George Bauer Dunbar titled “Coin du Lestin” realizing $29,520 and a George Rodrigue painting titled “Two is Better than One” achieving $31,980. Sunday concluded with a gilt-bronze lamp depicting Loie Fuller by Francois-Raul Larche that sold for $23,370.
